Don't agree in the slightest with most of what you have just said to be honest, rats mice fair enough.

If you got out enough during the season Stubby do yo think you'd need to go all year round?

Is it not if you caught enough during the season?

:hmm: the clue is in my signiture "pest control officer", so next time we get asked to clear rabbits from the railway tracks, as the digging is causing subsidence of the embankments, I should tell my bosses, sorry its the wrong time of year,

as for not being able to talk about "other people" I was referring to huntinglife members that come out with me on most trips, have never heard them complain

but thats leading off the point, I was just trying to say, you'll always have those that do, and those that dont, you'll get those that do it for sport, and those that class it purely as pest control, wether paid or un paid, at the end of the day, its still ferreting, whatever way you look at it, why should we try putting a divide between ourselves

Its lack of respect for the quarry that gives everyone in hunting a bad name, it's bad enough seeing what happens to adult rabbits down there.

If it has to be done and you as a 'pest controller' have to do it, why not use a more efficient method of clearing railway bank, then why not use gas? Ferreting will only scratch the surface compared to a true pest controllers method.

At the very least if you want some type of selective killing process use a rifle/airgun to thin them out. This way you can shoot the half/three-quarter grown ones. Leave the full grown ones alone.

This ensures that they are not leaving a nest full of starving young behind to die, but stops the population explosion.

Codes of conduct have been lashed into kids at an early age where I grew up, long before the term 'code of conduct' was even mentioned, we respect the seasons and animals we hunt.

If I wanted advice about pest control Stubby i'd ask my old man that has made a living from it for near 50 yrs, a BPCA title is something he does not need as people like him wrote the book.

Have you stopped learning yet pal? ;)

I was'ent going to reply to this, as it seems to me, if I said it was black, you'd say it was white, but, yes gas is a way of controlling rabbits, but if you have ever worked for london underground, you'd know that you cant just take anything onto their land/lines unless it has been passed with COSHH assesments, plus loads more paperwork to boot, health and safety tests longer than a bit of string, we can't even use a mouse trap, as they havent been passed, yes it gets infuriating, as sometimes we know the best way to deal with a particular pest, but if it ain't on their list, it aint getting in.

we therefore have three forms of control against rabbits on the track,

live catch... good takes but very time consuming, checking every 24hrs, can also be costly if traps are stolen or destroyed

air rifle... again can be a good form of control, but can only be done, when no other track workers are around, and not near houses/back gardens (health & safety again)

ferrets... less time, no worries on other workers,
