stephen58 1
Hi Patdahat , you say you "that they are a rare bird in your area " so why do you want to trap it for ??? I like the odd Jay or two around , when they start " cackling up " there is some~thing mooching about , you would be surprised how many times I,ve caught a fox out best regards Steve Quote Link to post
aaronpigeonplucker 32
they are very common in my area an i have trapped them in a very unusual way. i noticed that i was always finding the eggs in my duck house cracked open and sucked dry. after staying out there i found out that a pair of jays where the thieves so i started closing the door on my duck house each morning. but then i found that the ducks where laying outside because they couldent get in there duck house . so i tied some fising line to the door of my duck house. put an egg inside it. and waited. sure enough the jays landed on top of the house and flew down into it as they where feeding on theegg i jerked on the line closing the door to the duckhouse. the jays were trapped. problem solved. patdahat 41
humm these jays are in a forestry so the string on a door could be a problem i have set a few larsons with an artifical nest and some free range eggs has anyone caught them like so???? Quote Link to post
Tis TM 8
humm these jays are in a forestry so the string on a door could be a problem i have set a few larsons with an artifical nest and some free range eggs has anyone caught them like so???? I had two empty larsens out, with no callbirds, just baited up.... I caught a pair of Jay's in the first day and that was using big lumps of white bread.... I think the bait needed for catching will depend on what area they are in, eg, got a few houses around feeding garden birds, then nuts and bread would be appealing as they are quite likely getting some already..... If its woodland/farmland, then go for something like the mock nest. Quote Link to post
OldTrapCollector 377
I have caught plenty of jays in maize baited multi-catch cage traps set for squirrels - maybe there is scope for catching them in a basic funnel ground entry cage baited as above? OTC Quote Link to post
Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Caught them in funnel wire traps made for catching up pheasants for laying .Always let them go though as they make up for the odd egg eaten by the early warning system they provide .Baited purely with corn .
