getting a kayak !!!

Recommended Posts

wel i ahve decide that i am going to buy a 2 man kayak for bass fishing in west wales. the idea that sparked it off wa swhen i was bass fishing from caerfai beach in st.davids and was having a few schoolies, then i went up to thye cliffs on the left side of the bay and waleked along them and saw that there were tons of spots in acsesisable from shore because it was so steep. and i thought "wwell why not get a kayak?" i am looking forward to going kayak fishing into those perfect looking spots wich you can never get to. 1 problem though. i have only used a kayak once in the surf on pendine beach and havent had much experiece. its pretty calm in caerfai bay with no currents but ther i always a danger risk if the you go to far out. anybocy got any tips on how to kayak? i know the basics already though.

thanks, Aaron.

im a kayak coach aaron so if you have any questions just give me a shout

if i was you id spend a couple of days just getting used to the boat before trying to fish from it as they can be quite unstable on the sea just practice forwards and backwards paddling and also some sideways strokes think theres some technique videos on you tube.

also practice capsizing your boat and getting out it can be a shock to the system and very dis-orientating being upside down under water but as long as you stay calm and practice exiting the boat you will be fine.

also try and get some one to go with you as paddling on your own is big no no it can get very dangerous! if you cant then make sure you know the area you are paddling and tell some were you will be and what times you will be there and then if the worst happens (god forbid) then who ever you tell can alert the right people if you dont return when you should.

im not to sure on the anchor mate dont think it would be very practicle in a 2 man boat storage and stuff could be an issue plus your gonna need a lot of rope and chain to use an anchor on the sea and having that inside your boat can be very dangerous!

do you know about any safety equipment your gonna need mate? i wanna help but dont wanna sound patronisin an tell you stuff u already know

yeah youll need a bouyuncy aid and the wetsuit is always good! you might not need the helmet aslong as your confident in the boat. there the basics really if you wanted you could go down the road of a basic first aid kit and maybe a couple of flares just in case.

to be honest im not too clued up on kayak fishing im more of a white water paddler but again as long as your confident in the boat and use common sense im sure you'll be fine and make sure you keep those hooks away from the tubes of your boat!! ha ha.

any problems just let me know and ill see if i can help but keep us posted on how ou get on mate

If its a fishing yak you go for then you will be sitting on and not in it, capsizing is not really an issue with them. You can fall off them but they tend not to flip over so you just drag your a## back on as best you can. An anchor is fine iff conditions permit, i have a .7kg anchor and 100 yds of cord. It takes up hardly any room and is easy enough to use, ( remember to set a trip/release on the anchor when you attach the cord to allow for sea bed snagages )

Aron i know exactly where your on about mate and have stood on those cliffs and thought the same(if only you could get down there) but beware i have also seen some good rollers coming in on that beach and it won't allways be calm there.I have fished all round that headland from the shore and a helmet and flotation gear is a real must mate,on the left of the headland on the flat ledge i have caught 10lb+ bullhuss on a makeral head and guts so good sized fish are out there so go equiped to cover a few senarios, again without sounding funny mate i have paddled and fished in a canadian canoe all round that coast and have scared the pants off myself before. It's fecking more dangerous than it looks on a sunny day and do not go near the bitches untill your a lot, lot, lot more experienced, have fun and tight lines you lucky sod.
