Quite a lot of people with hounds feed there dogs whole ungutted rabbits... With no untoward harm, myself personally I like to gut them and skin them, but its each to there own... Either way the dogs won't compalin...

Fair enough its obviously something you feel strongly about :D I just dont see it as a major problem if a dogs breath stinks, they are dogs after all :D Mine dont throw up after eating rabbits but then they are fed them from 2-3 weeks of ages if bred here and 6-8 weeks onwards if I get a pup in, so theyre used to that diet and enjoy it. Plus my dogs would just re-eat whatever they did throw up, again its minging but its what dogs do ;)

In fact why dont you get a mixture of grass and rabbit pellets out of the field with a bit of cow shit thrown in, and give it to your dogs for tea!

Come on sjm, its not nice, letting your dog eat shit!

Now this will make you really crazy, I even let them drink from muddy puddles!!

Shock, Horror!!

So what do you think dogs eat in the wild then? do you think mummy dog cooks the dinner for daddy and baby dogs :clapper: dogs can get worms from raw rabbit whether you take the guts out or not, as there will be tapeworm cysts in the flesh, people just take the guts out because they dont like the look of a dog eating a pile of puddings. Personally I think your being very nit picky critisizing the man for feeding his dogs as they would choose to eat in the wild. Drop an ungutted rabbit with the belly slightly slit open in to a litter of 8 week old puppies and its like watching piranahs :D if you put down a dish of dry puppy food and a freshly killed still warm rabbit, they will choose the rabbit every time. The main reason I take bellies out of rabbits is to make them weigh less when carrying them in a rucksack if im out lamping or raking the moors, not for any other reason. Its all down to personal choice, each to their own theres no need to start slating people for it ;)

Some of my permission is on grazing land ,where young calves are reared with their Mothers, all my dogs love the calves shit its the milk content that attracts them.Rabbits eat their own shit before finally passing it its called refection.

I thought it might be beneficial health wise , so I attempted it myself but I got cramps in my stomach trying to reach round under .

When I'm out with my dog he can't get enough cow pats and rabbit shit. Sometimes he so fixated on truffling for the shit he doesn't even see the rabbits hopping off.

Mind you - he is only a young pup at the moment.

Can only agree with most of the above, I now dont even bother to skin/gut just feed the whole thing.

As long as you have a decent kennel pratice and stay on top of your worming its no problem.

Winnie, your spot on, for the price of a few extra drontal tablets, feeding them whole is the best grub in the world.

Slating!! I said i bet his dogs breath stink(not his) and asked if he let the lick him!! I wouldnt want the shit bladder anywhere near me, and i was having a going, its you coming back with the bother ...

And these dogs have been domesticated, they arent wild. You got feed a shit bag to most dogs, and they will inevitably throw up! And there breath will stink even worse! If thats what you like to smell in your dogs pens then fair enough..

I Gut mine then boil for a 1 1/2 hour then feed, or Gut +Freeze for 3 weeks then feed. The[ Bottom Line ] is they are not wild dogs[wolf, yotes, dingo] they are Domesticated dogs yes even a tough working lurcher. :o Plus just rabbit on it own is low in Protein, they need a Balanced diet.for the work they do? And it is Feckin differnt, a wolf or dingo might catch 3-4 rabbits for its dinner, not like your Domestic dog [Lurcher] catchs 15-20 rabbits day or night.? So its pointless to compare+feed like a wild dog.??

Thank you bird, i wasnt going to say anything back, as with most things on here, there is no point as no one listens to your reasons why. Sjm, mine eat full rabits like you say but you said you gutt yours like i do, so i dont know why it is bothering you. And all dogs eat shit while out, but you wouldnt spread it around in there pens or kennels for them to eat. And yes most dogs eat there own sick.

Theres a few worrying comments tho, like, my dog misses rabbits because it is eating shit! Well i would worry a little about my training if that was the case. And my dogs reguarly catch feathered game but bring it straight back, like anything else, i would be pretty pissed off if it turned and swallowed it. Plus surely a full meal like that while out means end of coursing for that day!!!

Rabbits are actually very high in protein ,but very low in fat, hence the need to give different types of meat, mine get ribs and chests of Lamb, plus a few eggs as well as the bunnies .A tin of Pilchards each a week and giblets from the bunnies ,keeps them up to snuff .

Domesticated or not, they're still dogs (well, wolves really). I've fed entire rabbits loads of times, the dogs just eat around the manky bits. The kennels don't stink because they're cleaned twice daily and disinfected weekly ;) Why on earth would their teeth be fecked, though? That's what I can't work out...

They wouldnt be!

Like you say all domesticated dogs have exactly the same digestive systems as their ancestor the wolf.... we have only changed their outward apearance through selective breeding.

Cooking rabbit, poultry, game or mutton on the bone and feeding to dogs is a major no no!! Bones will become hard and brittle and will not disolve in the dogs digestive acids in the stomach properly, and should always be fed raw.

As far as im aware 12 days in an average freezer will kill off worms and cysts (as i asked this in a recent topic and finally Skycat :notworthy: came up trumps with the info) I used to freeze all the rabbits, but after getting plenty of good advice off decent folk off this site ive stopped freezing, firstly because I struggle to find the space in the freezers to run a rotation for all of the hounds/dogs, and secondly ive got a free supply of wormers so its just a case of worming more often (every 2 months or so).

Like SJM I usually gut mine, not always, but if fed with the guts you are giving your dog more of a complete meal, filling most of its dietry requirements..... to the raw rabbit diet I will add plenty of fats(as rabbit lacks this, and it is very important for energy) and offcuts from beef/lamb/poultry (free from butchers) also venison and game and fish in season.

Yep, I did know that Micky mate - I've fed raw for donkeys and you're right of course :) I was just hoping that by highlighting it we might get runforyourlife to quantify his statement and hopefully tell us how feeding complete rabbits 'fecks' teeth ;)

sorry, i didnt mean feeding whole rabbits, i meant dogs eating shit, would sooner or latter make there mouths pretty rotten, maybe i am wrong but dont want to find out....Is that ok rainmaker, dont want to start another argument about this on here, as it happens every month.... May i just add i disenfect my kennels everyday, then they wont need cleaning out twice a day.
