Cage trapping rabbits

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Do any of you bother with cage trapping rabbits as the weather warms up and bait start to dry out.

If you do you have any tips

regards Roger.

I clear a lot of young rabbits during the summer months with cages.......and like has been said...re-fresh the carrots in the evening......OR......if its going to remain dry, use cornflakes or rabbit food from the pet shop.......!

Handy during a warm day...........but the mice will clear it overnight and it will become a soggy mess if it rains. But change the carrots often would be the best advice also try and position the cages in some shaded areas.

I work the runs with box traps where the growth has already created a tunnel at field boundries etc.So no need for bait.

Get a good catch rate once in place and locked open for a few days first to let them get used to it.

Its a simple home made set up that uses a passive 'trigger' they 'bump' to the side to get past releasing both doors at the same time.

Humane as it's live catch and offers shelter from elements for the short time in there.

I stop off and set them on way home from work then check at dusk while out with dogs. Then lock open untill next eve, reset, and away again.

12 traps out and I'm sorting 4-6 bunnies a night.

I think CSL recommended salting the carrots to keep them fresh but I've never tried it. As others have said, I refresh the carrots every evening as late as possible and use the shade of trees and bushes as long as this coincides with areas of rabbit activity.

Some good advice thanks intrested to here a bit more about these box traps

regards Roger
