f.a.c.sam 1
Hi guys. I have been reading through the forum extensively for the last few weeks and have picked up some great advice from other members. But here's my dilema basically i'm going to be applying for a centerfire and a shotgun in the next few weeks and i'm still unsure as what to get. I was thinking of a 223 for foxes and some longer range work (i already havea 22 rf), and then possibly a 12g over and under for pigeons and other things. My budget for both will be around £1500 maybe slightly more. So should i spend more on the rifle or the shotgun and would it be best to go new second hand? Been looking at the howa 1500 laminated but i really have no idea about shotguns. Really would appreciate any help anyone could offer. Thanks in advance Quote Link to post

f.a.c.sam 1
What is your reason for doing it that way as opposed to the other way round? Quote Link to post
NID 0
What is your reason for doing it that way as opposed to the other way round? imo I would prefer new rifle as i think more important to know how many shots passed through it,not so important with shotgun, just my opinon Sam,atb what ever way you go,NID. f.a.c.sam 1
Seems like a good train of thought, which I hadn't thought of. I thought that i would be keeping the shotgun longer so maybe a new one would be better, forgot to consider barrel wear on a centerfire tho oops Quote Link to post

trappa 517
Ive got the laminated howa in .223, its a great gun. i had some issues at the start finding the right bullet for it, but now i have, i swear by that rifle. There will be a pic somewhere in the show us your set up section. Quote Link to post
shottyscotty 3
get a new rifle and second hand shotgun or new rifle and cheap new shotgun Quote Link to post
f.a.c.sam 1
The howa 223 is definately the one I am going to go for, it looks the bees and I have heard very little in the way of negativity towards it compared with the tikkas, maybe a cheap cz will tempt me but i already have a cz and would like to try something a bit different. Are there any god recommendations for second hand shotguns and what sort of price range? Are there any particualr makes i should steer clear of aswell? Thanks again guys Quote Link to post
karlp86 0
it is definatley a good idea to buy a rifle new. the howa is definatly a top gun. i have a .223 howa with a laminate stock there is a link to a pic of it in my sig. my shotgun is a lincoln premier, it was cheap but it shoots straight and does the job asked of it. atb karl Quote Link to post

arveyboy 0
That is the exact one i want pepper laminate stock stainless barrel. If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it and was it new or second hand? i tried looking at getting that rifle in .243. cheapest price i could find was £600. only 60 quid cheaper than a tikka t3 lite Quote Link to post
f.a.c.sam 1
Sorry where did you find that price was it on guntrader or brand new from an rfd? Quote Link to post
arveyboy 0
just about everywhere i looked and enquired. my local dealer quoted me about 610. some were about 750 but the cheapest was 600. i bet you'll find people on here who bought them for 400 pounds. its probably worth getting a tikka t3 instead. people i asked said tikka everytime Quote Link to post

If you don't mind me asking how much did you pay for it and was it new or second hand? i bought it new from andrew at uk custom shop in january of this year. i got the rifle screw cut with a predator 8 mod, rings, bases, a scope (which i later sold on) and some ammunition for a bit under £1000. unfortunatley they had just recieved a price hike before i bought it but i dont really care i'm chuffed to bits with it and it shoots 0.3MOA with 50grain Vmax norma ammunition. as for tikka's if you are going to get one buy one of the older models not the t3 because they are built with better quality. the new t3's are certainly no better than the howa's. atb karl.
