kyescott 3
hope you can help, my dog has fractured his central tarsal bone 5 weeks ago. Had him to vets 4 weeks ago said he cant say if dog will run again. it is not 1 of the main bones and he has advised to keep it bandaged for 4 weeks then 4 weeks of rest. it was xrayed and is only fractured not a bad break " vets words". dog is 2 yrs old and would be gutted if he wont be able to run again, any advise would be very helpful. regards kye. skycat 6,174
A lot depends on what type of break it is: you need to see a Greyhound vet as they see these sort of injuries all the time: prognosis for certain types of break is not good, and in some cases screws are inserted into the bone to hold it in place. I've nothing against small animal practices, but IMO a specialist running dog vet is the best to see for this type of thing.
ferret15 0
as skycat said go see a greyhound man this is what they specialize in. i have a collie x Grey here who broke two and fractured a third at about the same age as she had broken the middle two and fractured an outside one they were splinted and bound together for the best art of 12 weeks (stamped on by a horse) the fractures were quite high upon the hind leg she has healed almost perfect and it doesn't affect her running, but having said that i have had her on glucosmine and codliver oil since the moment i found out she had broken it an she will some times be a little stiff the day after a hard run but its all forgotten as soon as something catches her attention. she is 5 years old now.
