My Lurcher and Whippet in the wars.... :(

-Megnjasstubble.jpg

While out on my usual walk on some common land I was surprised to see a herd of cows turned out... not being a fan of cows I decided to take the dogs back to the van and head off elsewhere for a run. While walking back to the track my dogs were still off lead ( totally ignoring the cows... just hunting up in the bushes as usual) The cows became very curious and came running towards us.. I called my rough coated dog over to me but as he tried to come to me the cows went across his path. I heard yelps and howls but as he came to me he appeared unmarked apart from a few grass stains... it was soon evident that he had his tail trodden on and de-gloved about 2 inches :(

The vet has now amputated about 3 inches and after his check up yesterday, they are saying he may need a re-amputation as its not healing too well. Back on Monday with an empty stomach and assessment !!! I am hoping it will take a turn for the better over the weekend and save another operation.

Any Ideas on how to help this heal?

Before the vets appointment looking sore.

Had Meg out a night or 2 later... just a late evening walk. She must have spotted something up ahead and had a chase.. I could see her get into the side of the hedge and after a few minutes she was running back to me where we carried on for a nice mooch about. She seemed her usual happy, contented self, still busy having a good look about.

They jumped back in the van bout 9.15pm and off home ( 5 minute drive). As she walked in the house I was shocked to see what she had done! Looked like she had been spiked .. but not sure. All winter neither had injuries and then all this..!!

On way to vets.

I have to say... Meg is a tough little whippet who makes little fuss about anything. She has healed well and wants to get out for a run.

Here she is home from vets.. all stitched up and on the mend.

You had a bit of bad luck there with two injuries back to back.........but they will both make a full recovery quite quickly. Injuries to running dogs........especially whippets, usually look far worse than they actually are. I have had real nasty cuts to my whippets in the past........real big wide open cuts..........that have healed up to be hardly noticable.....so yours will be barely visible in a week or two.

I also had a deerhound/ greyhound cross some years back that had to have a few inches of his tail.......and that too healed well..........but tails for some reason do take a bit of time to come good. The problem i had with my old dog was that he was so pleased to see me.... he whipped his injured tail about until it bled again......and nothing i could do would stop him........but even that eventually healed well.

So although things look bad........given time all will come good........albeit your vet will be that bit richer and you that bit poorer ;)

Thanks for that Rolfe, am just concerned about Jaspa needing a re-amputation on Monday... he looks so unhappy about the whole thing :(

Yes Hollie, the vets are out for the money but not sure they actually 'like' me as I often have a little disagreement with them :icon_redface: I asked for a pack of Advocate yesterday for the pup and they refused to sell it to me as he wasn't registered with them and they hadn't seen him.... so after telling them how ridiculous that was I bought it for Meg even though it's for the pup.. I then wanted the insurance to be paid direct to the vet and I pay the excess and they told me that THEY would charge ME for the admin !!! ffs ... I pay my insurance to cover large costs and the vet wants to charge ME to have the Insurance pay them direct !!!! :censored:

Its good news about your Whippet Cross making a full recovery iamduvern... Good luck with him.
