    Some confusion with regard to the DEFRA and general licence: As I understand it's okay to use the setting Sun or Moon (silhouette) AND okay with permission to lamp if it's an artificial roost, like a farm building, but NOT a tree? I maybe wrong? i,m not sure either but I thought it only covered game birds,? This is the daft point, when roosting a Pigeon becomes a game bird?

    I beg to differ, I've shot FAC air and Sub 12ft/lb at 30 yard and had the pellet go through a Rabbit's head, whereas when I've shot rabbits with Eley Sub, which are expanding .22lr ammunition the bullet has not, it has expanded, lost energy in doing so and remained in the Rabbit's head.

    Total agree, my Anschutz 1417 is a great gun and delivers a .22 sub in side a 10p coin at 25 yards. However, my HW100 can easily shoot through the same hole at 25 yards and in calm conditions hit a 5p at 50 yards.

    I can't see what they are trying to prove? So an experienced springer shooter can shoot at 25/50 yards (indoor/no wind). Let's see the same test at 100 yards in a breezy field, or a penetration test on ballistic gel! I wounder if we'd pick up the springer for plus 100 yard rabbit shots?

    I think some people, especially inexperienced shooters, are a little unsure of what they are doing and just need a little like-for-like guidance as to how other lads set their rifles up David. It's a lot easier for those of us who've been doing this for so long it's just a matter of instinct as to how to set up our scopes for the kind of shooting we are setting out to undertake. So, my guidance is; Set you zero to the distance at which you regularly shoot 50% of your quarry. ie, for my .22 air, .22 FAC air and .22lr most of my rabbits are shot at 25 yards (50%).     People spend too much time worrying about zero range on small caliber rifles. Mine are; HW100 .22 @ 12ft lbs: 25 yards. Webley Patriot .25 @ 31ft lbs: 25 yards. Anschutz 1417 @ 98ft lbs: 25 yards Not until my Browning T-Bolt in .17hmr do I change to 100 yard zero.

    I'm not sure low number due to mild winters apply to my permissions? The rabbit population was remarkably low until mid July. I went to a permission last week which is only 2 acres and counted 34 rabbits, so added to the amount in the burrow numbers must be rather high.

    My license has fox on my hmr. I'm confident shooting foxes with my hmr. I have shot many foxes with my hmr. I consider it a decent fox gun. As for windage and distance surely you take that into account with any caliber gun on any quarry ? I have a 22 250 does that mean if I'm out with that I can shoot fox from here to tim buck two? I've also shot foxes at around 40 yard with 22 250. Is this overkill should I have went home and got the hmr. Hmr will shoot for to a certain distance comfy.     I have a pigeon shoot where the plowed field is 18" from a 10`x100` brick wall. I can't use a hide and can't put decoys out so have to shoot standing. First shot the pigeons take off leaving two shots, they don't come back. Hence my application for section 1 shotgun, 8 shots remaining after the first shot to scatter the birds. So in answer, there are sometimes good reasons. Oh and of course the good old BR99, that's a good enough reason ;-)

    How did you get a section 1 shotgun if you don't know what one is? You must have applied for a section 1 shotgun and have a good reason to acquire one as is the case with any firearm?

    Hi Ben, this is my post from another `permission wanted`: Although knocking on doors is best I must say I picked up 2 permissions from ads placed on forum sites and in gun shops this year. One good place is farm wholesalers, the one who sell feed, fencing etc. They generally have `free` ad boards. Get some nicely printed cards and place a few ads ;-) Try these: http://www.shootingcards.co.uk/ There should be plenty of farm wholesalers in your area, good luck ;-)

    25 yards. Good distance and most ranges have a 25 yard range.

    I've had mine for four and a half years. Never missed a beat, throws 21g 8' and 27g 15'. Took it on holiday this year and put two slabs through it with no problems.

    Good luck mate but it's like knitting fog getting permission around here lost my 2 best perms owing to farmers selling up then spent months knocking on doors only to be verbally abused, threatened and a host of other things one farmer said he would shoot the dog in the back of the land rover if I didint get off his property seriously thought about packing the whole lot in picked a couple of small perms up now and hopefully a bigger one come the start of the season don't think anybody on here is going to give you there perm better get out knocking on doors but be prepared for a lot of abuse and

    Depends on the gun and scope. My Anschutz 1417 takes up more room with its 40mm scope than my 17hmr t-bolt with its 50mm scope.

    No, they are fine to eat. You sometimes find them in farm eggs.

    Can be a lack of water. If it's not a young birds (settling in) it can be an older bird slowing its egg production.

    If you are unlucky FEO will check the level of quarry, if they turn up on a lean quarry day it can affect your chance of a FAC Also, you can't lend a section 1 as easily as a section 2. Some clay grounds won't allow a section 1. Some quarry can't be shot with a section 1. I would keep the SGC going, even if you don't want to own a section 2 at the moment.
