For hutches I'd say it's best to have them open at the top. This helps a little when trying to keep the ferrets inside the cage while you open it for whatever reason. They can be good climbers so it's not full proof... certainly helps when the mesh doesn't run to the very top as that's an easy climb. Having said that you will never be able to fully clean a hutch that only opens from the top so other methods of entry are needed for the clean outs. For outdoor runs you want them to be tall enough to walk in. If its a small lightweight run them it should be easy to lift/move. Massively helps wit

As the guys have said, salt. Fresh road kill is a great way to keep your ferrets going (Herbivores, some omnivores). Loads of pheasants around my area.

It is a good show to fill your holes for your farmer. Adds a little extra pest control as you would hope the rabbits move on for an easier shelter. One of mine talks as if he wants the 'holes' gone for the machinery, but... it's my favourite field! It moves away from a day out, to work, if your filling in warrens in my opinion. Especially if it's 20+ holes!

I use GoPros for my main shots. Also have an SJ4000 and a mobius. The SJ is the one watching the hole from across the track, it's not handling the sun very well. The GoPro is the footage in the hedge watching the hole close up, it's notably better quality.Saw some footage off a lad the other day he had used a amkov amk 5000s it was pretty impressive for a £48 camera. Thanks for the tip off! Looked into the camera and it seems to be great quality for the money. The SJ's were always the cheapest bet for a GoPro knock off but even they have exploded in price (For the most recent versions). Any

Took a walk down the lane by the farmers house knowing there was an easy little warren. Didn't looked used last year but there was freshly kicked dirt this time around. This is how I got on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=APT77Dhfm-Y After that I looked around the hedgerows hoping to find a warren that would allow me access to both sides easily as I was out on my own. Found one near enough to an open gate so ran the longnets around. The hob bolted one nice and quick but gave me the run around on the second. One marked stayed in place long enough for me to try digging but just before I brok

Used to have a little jill that could wall jump like that. Impressive.

Thanks. Think that area needs a rest. Hope to scrape another video or two from another area but feel theres only a fortnight in it.

Require A Small Working Strain Of Ferret.
ZeusPolecat replied to Poacherspocket's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Never seen a problem with albino to albino. There's tales against eyesight but I've never noticed a difference, nor seen it mentioned on here. Perhaps an old wives tale. Silvers can have problems, which I've seen myself and believe the breeding was the problem but only my opinion. Took plenty albino to albino kits from my uncle, in early life and they lived long equipped lives. -
Had an old hob that suffered from this a few times. Was a child at the time and didn't spot the problem early enough, cost a fair bit in the end. Well worth checking. He made 13 in the end!

Seen videos on youtube of him filming with a camera mounted on a ferret. I've tried that too but the footage is never great, much better to have a stationary camera. Perhaps hes doing the same, I've not seen any of his DVDs.

Yeah as the guys have said, its a locator and spade ferret. My two jills bolt well enough so use them the most. My hob just gets used on the flat flood plains, which is half my ground, as its easier to dig. I'm a bit lazy when it comes to that though haha ill be honest. Many others crack on, and will dig half a day if needs be, respect to them!

Set ups have gotten a bit ridiculous, especially when nothings home. But when I'm grey and old, looking back on my trips out, It will all be worth it. I am very aware it can be hard to watch for some. But also interesting and perhaps educational for others. I try to find a balance. I remove loads of footage and sound. I do feel like I'm pushing it here but had a little stick on some of the old videos about the ferrets not preforming well enough. I'm trying to show those genuinely interested how this all works, while still keeping it tidy enough for other viewers. Not had any of

Any One Have Dark Polecats As In Near Black
ZeusPolecat replied to fay's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
As long as people are not breeding runts and angoras there isn't a problem. Silvers shouldn't be bred to silvers either, or at least not from the gene pools I've seen in action. Inbreeding needs to be minimal. Colour preference isn't all that bad, size isn't either (to an extent) just study the parents health, heritage and working ability first. -
Carpet stores will give away nice sized tubes for free (Saves them money) Just saw them to size. They need to be kept dry. They last a while and can just be disposed of and replaced again if needs be.

A great contrast on how a hob works compared to jills (In the previous videos). The shots of the hob intercepting the rabbits is a little out of shot, but perhaps that's best as I don't want to show too much. Unfortunately there are a few myxi rabbits in the video, I fear my best permission is overrun with the disease. I hope to spend some time on a different permission to end the season. Its twenty miles away from the outbreak... fingers crossed.

Cat biscuits will do short term. Bags of ferret biscuits a fairly cheap, is there a pets at home nearby?

Have built a sort of scarecrow myself at times by using the bags we carry equipment in hanging on the spade. I think it works. But haven't done it enough to guarantee it wasn't a coincidence.

Some fierce battles there. Thanks for sharing.

I got my stop nets especially for a certain permission that has a fence either side of the hedge. I measured the distance between them then attached my poles at that length. Just pass a pole through to a friend on the other side anywhere I find a gap in the hedge. Using a board works well enough too, I've used cardboard if its dry enough.

Maybe just no rabbits at home then. Ferrets can also sense a dead end without actually moving all the way down a burrow using their sense of smell. Perhaps that could be the reason. Unfortunately I can't keep a dog, so choosing occupied warrens is always a chore. Freshly kicked dirt, droppings and fur are great indicators but it doesn't always guarantee a rabbit and it can lead to a bit of frustration if you've wasted a morning on empty burrows. What I often do is just stroll quietly until I see a rabbit entering a system, then you know for sure there's at least one down there and that can oft

How old is the hob? How much experience does he have? Might just need time. It can be a little off putting setting up lots of nets for nothing. Keep at it
