  1. How did the dog work the first time you took him out?you dug to him ok? The second time you had him out did you have to dig him out or was he just messing about and coming out on his own? i would have been more concerned if the dog marking his homework had found after the red dog, which he did'nt.I should think the dog has done little work and would have settled down if used regularly.Out of interest how much was being asked for the dog.
  2. You sir, win a goldfish, i thought it might have taken longer than that.
  3. Might get the hang of this picture job if i keep trying
  4. Here's another old one, again early eighties, the dog is i think about 10mths old when the photo was taken.can you guess which dog this is? sorry for the poor quality of the photos but they are pictures of ctures(pre digital days)

  6. This is the first time i have posted a reply to a photo but these are a lovely pair of terriers,am interested in how they are bred, just out of curiosity really.
  7. Dog has to find and get settled 1st so your looking at least 20min then with a 9ft dig your goin to have to make the dig at least 5-6 ft in lenght and 3ft wide to give yourself room to work,so soft ground or not and with 2 diging its still a lot of diging. And a shit load of shovelling out. Digging deep and throwing well back lol. How accurate are the latest terrier finders?is it what it says on the box? next time you sit on the couch having a cup of tea look at the opposite wall, start at the skirting board and let your eyes move slowly up the wall to the ceiling thats at least 8ft i liv
  8. Vixens digging a selection of cubbing earths? or am i being naive?
  9. seen one up a tree in the middle of cover one morning when i thought hounds had put one to ground. Sat tight like a cat looking down on the hounds while they scrambled looking up and running around confused. It got away too, i gave it too much of a fair chance. Survival of the fittest, i can't argue with that. They like lime trees a lot but have had three in an oak tree.had one in the middle of and old oak tree the farmer helped us chop in with an axe to get in out . Also my brothers stables has over hanging trees that I've seen foxes climb in . Sorry should have said up an oak tree, bigg

  11. We used to carry a tarp sheet for when we dug on a nice field or paddock and wanted to leave it nice and clean, always cut the turfs and put all the spoil on the sheet. then when back filling once it was light enough two of you take a side each and funnel the remainder into the dig.then if you have your vehicle with you iron it out by driving over it.
  12. If only it was thirty years ago i would have been delighted to accept your offer. on a serious note this is a generous offer and normally i would not go in for dick measuring contests but surely there must be someone out there with a decent digging terrier who would enjoy a days digging in wiltshire.
  13. as i said in a previous post the dog i had was first class, about 5yrs later we had a dog and 2 bitches, the dog was plummer marked the bitches solid tan,the dog was overcooked as a youngster and was sold back but i heard he put his poor entering behind him and turned into a solid worker.the one bitch was a cracking terrier would work anything and kill a fox,the other bitch did'nt turn out to be any good for earthwork and was put down.there was another dog in the litter who also worked. so 3 out of 4 worked which is'nt to bad,no better and no worse than any other type of terrier. i will add th
  14. patience and time are the best things to give your pup,he's got plenty of time in front of him so go steady and watch him mature into a really useful terrier.
  15. Had a terrier direct off plummer in the late seventies who became a first class worker,he was used solely as a digging dog and was excellent.i did take him occasionally with a pack of hounds as a busmans holiday and he worked bales and buildings for foxes no problem,so given the opportunity he was a good allrounder but as i said he was a digging terrier first and foremost. I was'nt a plummerite and not really interested in the creation of the plummer terrier, the dog i had was just my working terrier.
  16. Yes it was,not sure about the no. in reply to gasman i know we are going back a bit but i am pretty sure he was sired by spartacus as for the dam i could'nt say,do know he bought him direct from gould.
  17. Was your mate Paul H?Yes it wasThe dog you're talking about was the grandfather to the dog and bitch in my aviator. Very good, if they follow the grand father they must be decent dogs, thinking about it i was there when he had his first dig, feeling old now.
  18. A lad who used to dig with me 20 odd years ago had a black dog called flint that was a spartacus pup, not sure of the dam but the time scale is about right to be scratch.Flint was a really useful dog on anything and would take care of any fox he got to. The lad that owned him was from egham in surrey but i have'nt spoken to him in a long time so don't. now if any of that blood still about.
  19. I always used double pegs, in effect it purses twice as fast and you have'nt got a fox bouncing about on a long length of draw cord plus the added security of two pegs to hold it.
  20. Having read your post i dug out my old net bag and found i had seven 6ft nets in there. Five, that were knitted for me,double peggers, 4 never used, 1 as new, complete with pegs. the other 2 i think were shop bought and are used but still serviceable, might have the odd broken mesh repaired but will still hold a fox, no pegs on these 2. open to offers if they are any good to you or anyone else. There were some mk1 deben locator boxes and collars in there as well if anyone still uses them.
  21. He was started to young and should have been given time off after starting really well. The lad that had him it was his first terrier to dig to and he was a bit to keen and would'nt listen to sound advice.I always thought that with a good lay off that he would bounce back and be a good dog, seems he did work ok for cp which is good as he was a lovely stamp of a terrier.
  22. Thanks for the replies lads, tinytiger thanks for the link to the thread of pontes, i was really interested in how he got on as a worker, i knew the dog as a youngster and had the chance to own him before he went to plummer and then to c.p. Always think should i have taken the dog on,mind you the stud fees must have amounted to a few bob.
