Have heard there's now no racing at Knebworth, nor the Cheshire show the following week. Can't see anything on the website though. Anybody know anything?

This little bitch has distinctive pricky-up ears and markings on her toes. She's much missed so I hope nobody minds me cross-posting.

Kelpies/Kelpie crosses
Fabapocalypse replied to Fabapocalypse's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
Because he's not my own dog, I'm not sure I can put up a photo (plus you wouldn't believe the politics there are in the rescue game!), but I've PMd Neal and am about to send one to Shell too once the forum lets me. -
Mine's from a song lyric, thought it was a good idea at first because no-one else would have it, but it's a beggar to type and even I can't pronounce it....

Why do people wear REALTREE / CAMO TO SHOWS!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Fabapocalypse replied to MRD's topic in General Talk
Nothing wrong with Aussie hats; they keep the sun off, the rain off, and don't make you look like you just came from the Ipswich Truck Stop or are going to kick down a few bus stops on the way home, while avoiding the line dancing/"Village People" connotations of a Stetson (sorry Mark)... ... and (sorry Mark again) why does anybody in Britain wear a baseball hat? Has anybody in Britain ever played baseball? -
I spent some time today with a dog which looks to me from his conformation to have some Kelpie in him, although there's no way to be sure. He's probably about 15 months old but again there's no way to be certain of that. He has a really good temperament, is great with kids and other dogs (but not cats or bikes!), is a bit manic in a sort of "more than collie" way, if that makes sense, but is very smart and learns quickly if you can get his attention. Which is the difficult bit! He doesn't have much of an attention span at the moment and is into everything. He's very "busy", always look

NOW, THAT'S WHAT I CALL A VETS BILL .....
Fabapocalypse replied to Strong Stuff's topic in General Talk
That's one very scary piece of paper! Or rather many scary pieces of paper. My vet will deal directly with the insurance company if the bill is over £500 - which I think is bad enough, really; surely they (vets in general) must realise that we pay for insurance because we don't have large chunks of free cash? I'm sure if you speak to them they will come to some sort of arrangement. And are the insurers so unreliable that the vets are afraid of non-payment or late payment? If so, something needs to be sorted because as usual it's the customer (and possibly the animal) that suffer -
My lad... a possible "yes": ... and a "maybe not"... ...an "ooh that's better"... ...and a "on the other hand"... He actually hates posing for pictures: if you point a camera at him, he immediately droops and looks at you like you stole his dinner-money. If he's running around enjoying himself, he's totally different, and I have loads of happy shots of him doing that. He rarely looks directly at the camera but the other evening around walk-time, he did this, and I got it on my phone. Scary. And do I really want the stick back?!

Sorry for thread hijacking but I volunteer with a lurcher rescue; we often get dogs coming to us from pounds and dog wardens - the good ones, anyway. Many pounds still destroy dogs within a certain time (it varies according to area) if they aren't claimed. Dogs that are stolen can be miles away within a very short time, tried and dumped, or sold on to who knows where. You should see the state some of them end up in; and the ones we get are the lucky ones. One dog dies every hour in this country (this refers to all breeds) because it's a "stray" - and those are the recorded "put to sleep" deat

This is local to me so I've been quite a few times... The show has got quite a bit bigger over the years. It used to suffer a bit when the Gamekeeper and Countryman Fair was held at Redbourn at Easter and then Herts County Show there as well, at Whitsun. Since the Gamekeeper has gone up to Kelmarsh, Knebworth has grown a bit. I went 2007 when it was held Mayday bank holiday weekend, I still had (retired!) terriers then and it was a really good day... had a good atmosphere, good selection of trade stands. Don't think I entered any of the dog events except my friend's Staffy bitch in the "

Know what you mean ! We've been around; I've had a few health issues and we went away to Suffolk for a much needed break, where even the beer is lurcher friendly! Going again this weekend. I will PM you a link for the holiday photos...

Hi Mark.. I wondered if it was you when I saw the TX bit! Good to see you. Sykes sends his best to you and Grendel and the Fishfamily. I still say you should all come on a UK tour... Jules

It's the East of England Lurcher Club, I believe. Can't find any schedule or anything online though, so I'm not certain.

The Autumn Show is just the Sunday, the 11th. There is a charity coursing event on the Saturday (which is already fully booked, with a reserve list) but the show itself is just the one day, Sunday.

Not working, just exercising: new year's eve, 2007. Out on my own with my dog, he was having a mad five minutes, like they do, in a part-flooded field and hit my left leg head on... I was taking photos of him at the time, and this is, genuinely, the moment just before impact: I didn't go down straight away, only when the pain hit, and when I did it was into six inches of water. I was two miles from my car but it was the first time I'd taken this particular route and I didn't know where I was, if you see what I mean, to call anybody out. It was a long, slow hobble back; I didn't see a

This site (based in Israel) has a lot of info on the Desert Salukis, coat types and so forth. They had a litter back in July and had a webcam on them but I'm not sure if it's still running. Ruah Midbar Salukis

I used to go to this show every year to race my terriers, and it was good fun. Over the last few years entries for the terrier and lurcher showing sections fell away (why, I couldn't possibly comment - I didn't "do" showing) and for the last couple of years they've held a kind of "all dogs together" thing class by class in the main ring, without separate showing for terriers and lurchers. You bought a bunch of raffle tickets ringside and handed them in one at a time when you wanted to enter a class... the atmosphere wasn't the same. The last couple of times I've been, the parking honch

Cool job! So... as a matter of interest (and bearing in mind the "big cats wild in Britain" threads that have popped up recently), if this cheetah decided it wanted a bit more exercise one day, would the 6-and-a-half foot fence mentioned in the article get in his way? I'm pretty sure I've seen photos of cheetahs up trees and that...

Thanks for the tips! My dog is a bit of a pain at the finish... he hits the lure hard and is forever busting muzzles doing it... the time before last we were running, somebody else started him for me and I went up to the end. They'd marked the finish line, then stopped the lure about twenty yards past it and put a bit of that heavy duty plastic tarpaulin stuff over that point - you know the stuff they make lorry sides out of? So I waited about thirty feet past that. When himself arrived a short time later he hit the tarpaulin so hard that he - and the lure, and the tarpaulin - all slid -

Right I asked! Apparently we have a Ford Bendix motor.... and some other stuff: "A starter soleniod to do the on and off .. but i have been wondering about using a dynamo as a motor and a 3 ohm potentiometer to control the speed .. not tried it yet ... also have used a Bosch 70W 12v dc motor and a torque controlled dc variable speed unit " Friend says he's having problems keeping the line taut when stopping/starting, any hints welcome! He's an engineer by trade... I have absolutely no idea what any of what I've just copied in means
