MOLLY - deerhound cross lurcher went missing on return from a walk on 23rd January in Elmbridge, Surrey. There have been no sightings since. Molly is neutered and is a pet, not a working dog. She was wearing a collar and tag and is microchipped. Her family have postered the area extensively and are distraught that she is missing. If you have any information please contact DogLost or Southern Lurcher Rescue.

WOODY - young male neutered lurcher went missing on a walk yesterday (29th January) in a heavily wooded area near Ide Hill in Kent and despite knowing the woods well has not been seen since. He is quite distinctive, having a mostly black body and brindle legs. He was wearing a collar and tag and is microchipped. Woody is a pet, not a working dog and his family are distraught that he is missing. It was reported that members of a shoot in the area had no sightings of him; unfortunately we are now hearing reports that he may in fact have been shot (see post below). If you have any in

Disability Living Allowance is not means tested - so yes, you can work and still get the payment, if you are fit enough to do so. It is meant to cover the expenses which are often greater for disabled people than for the able bodied (and trust me - some of those expenses you won't have even thought of). "Motability" - the system which provides a car for disabled people, can only be accessed if you are in receipt of the higher rate of the "mobility" component of Disability Living Allowance. You do not receive that component of the benefit AND the car - the benefit pays for the car, it's eit

Never done it myself, but my friend's brother is a parachute instructor at an airfield in Cambridgeshire, they do all sorts of jump packages and deals. Not to put you off or anything, but this guy (who spends every weekend jumping out of planes, apparently successfully) came out on a dog walk once with my friend and I. There was a squeak and a thump and when we looked there he was falling backwards over a log...

ACES activity days, roughly once a month near Gatwick, they post details in the "Events" section on here. Sussex Longdogs race twice a month from March to November. There is Sutton Valence Lurcher Club near Maidstone too but not been there.

My dog is an ex-worker, now a companion. He's my third "working dog" companion, a lurcher. The previous two were JRTs; they both went ratting, bushing and racing and had long happy lives. Were the lurcher (and I!) fitter, I'm sure he could do both; he still wants to work and gets the odd rabbit, but I don't think he would be up to "working for his living" as he has an old injury which can play him up if he runs hard. We still manage to have a lot of fun though and he isn't wrapped in cotton-wool as some pets are; we go out and about, and go racing and lure-coursing. I for one wish ther

A near disaster yesterday whilst walking the dogs.
Fabapocalypse replied to mally's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
On Wednesday, here, a lady died under the ice after going onto a local lake after her boxer. I'd met this lady and her dog a few times out exercising; you hear about these things every year there's a bad freeze but it hits home when it's somewhere you know well, and somebody you've spoken with and waved to. The dog was found safe; it seems they usually are, but it does beg the question: what would you do? Mally obviously went in... I prefer to avoid the possibility by not going near frozen water if I can help it, it scares me silly. -
Big cats If you go to the "latest news" bit then whichever area you're interested in, sightings and reports are listed in order. Interesting stuff, whether you believe or not. I looked into this a while back - I saw something a few years ago in Hertfordshire, and something else a few months back in Suffolk. Both times had dogs with me, both times dogs reacted. Don't know what the somethings were though!

They're all looking good... But this one's on a mission:

well said mate! the amount of terriers ive seen get ruined cause they never get socalised is unbelieveble some people think kenneling a dog till its ready to work is the way, they take it to an earth and expect it fly in it cause its mad in the kennel but alot of the time the dog just shits itself cause its never been out and hasnt got a clue what to do!! i got my sister a terrier years back that was a nervous wreck as it had never bin out the kennel but with some attenion and fuss she came out of her shell and was spot on at bolting foxes in the end but no way would of done before! good luck

Without wanting to get involved in any arguments about the various breeds' and types' qualities or otherwise, I'd been wondering about this, too... I have a lurcher with a bit of bully in. His head has a pronounced ridge on the top, but the staffordshire bitch I sometimes look after has an equally pronounced dent in the top of hers... He's like a Klingon up there, the ridge is quite sharp and noticeable. If you look at the staffy's head from the back it's practically heart-shaped. So I was just wondering about the different head shapes... I seem to remember my JRTs had pretty flat

Lure machine (where to buy or how to make)
Fabapocalypse replied to ihatealiens's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
A good friend made one for me, and he did say that if you didn't have the parts already to hand, it wouldn't be the cheapest thing in the world to make. He's making a few pulleys for me now too so I can lay out a course as well as run straights. The only problem for me, round here, is finding somewhere to use it! -
I've had issues with RSPCA "approved" kennels too. I got a terrier from one ten years ago, it was around this time of year. I was supposed to pick her up in the new year because of the not-rehoming-animals-at-Christmas thing, then two days before Christmas they rang and said they couldn't get her to eat, did I want to try, so home she came... The kennels were cold, wet, smelly, unlit and had a strip of mouldy carpet each down the middle. There was no bedding of any kind. The terrier had been spayed a day or so previously and the dressing was soaked and filthy. She stank. She went on to rec

Good on you and good luck with him! I got a JRT the same way - mine was eleven months old when I got him - but same thing, probably bought on impulse then locked away and ignored. I had him sixteen years and he turned into a right little cracker. He had his own ideas about some things (don't they all!) but never actually failed at anything I asked him to do. Broke my heart when he died. Somebody told me that the people who had him before me went out and got a Boxer puppy shortly afterwards

Just watched it on iPlayer. Not exactly reasoned debate, was it? I thought it was sensationalist and designed to be divisive, to force sections of the community already in disagreement towards conflict. The antis will be full of righteous indignation because "That nice Mr Craven said it, so it must be true", and the proper hunters will be steaming at the misrepresentation. The sort who don't care about the land, the quarry and the law won't care about the programme either, the RSPCA are generally ineffective at whatever they do and the police never arrive anywhere on time anyway.

Borzois on YouTube on rabbits: There are also some clips on there of borzoi being used on wolf, but as the wolf in question is on a lead and being dragged about in one clip I'm not so keen on that one

I've just found another one of mine on another - and different to those before - website. Lifted off another forum. It's a charity again, or at least one with charitable intent, but it would be nice if they would just ask!

I still reckon the brindle with the little white spot but then I'm a bit biased towards dogs marked like that

This one isn't too bad for rolling in stuff, but my old JRT was terrible and once came back so covered in horse-sh*t, literally only the whites of his eyes and his teeth showing, he can only have been under the horse at the precise moment the horse opened the pod-bay doors.

A telephoto lens is one that is capable of making far away objects seem closer, normally only at one focal length (strength of magnification, if you like). A zoom lens is a lens capable of changing focal lengths, so it can move from, say, wide angle (making close objects seem further away) through to telephoto. They're more versatile as you don't have to change lenses for different jobs but the quality isn't quite as good as from fixed length lenses.

Been down at Sussex Longdogs today, BBC weather site said "light showers". Yeah, right. It was like being in the rinse-and-spin cycle of a washing machine, with added wet clay splatting about. Really awful weather. Yuk.

Don't be mental, if he done it on purpose why would he try and grab the dog before he goes for the ladies guide dog? He makes a move to grab his dog before it even see's the other dog. The bloke is just a prat who's got a dog that he shouldn't have. I don't mean he was looking for another DOG to make a victim of; that's exactly why I said about him trying to grab his dog when it launched. He was probably waiting for an easy mark to top up his giro. Unless walking your dog to the local station and standing about in the tunnel with it right in the way of everybody is what peop
