in parts of asia people skin alive and then eat dog's why not pts these ex-racer's and help those? you could alleviate a hell of a lot more suffering with your 200-300 pounds if you did that. Right-ho. On the way over we'll save the tiger, the panda and the orang-utans of Borneo, rebuild a few villages flattened by the tsunami and then go on to replant the burnt-out bush in Australia... And with the change we'll pay the next vet bill for the dumped lurcher from Berkshire with the cruciate damage. Not really the same thing.

Rescue lurchers and greyhounds come in from Ireland because it's virtually impossible to rehome them there. How often are we going to hear this myth about dog rescue being profitable, or at least a business?! Dog comes in: it's not neutered or microchipped. That's done. Can't tell if it's been vaccinated, so that's done. It'll be wormed and de-flea'ed. For that little lot, just the basics, is between £200 and £300. Then it has to be fed and housed until it's re-homed. And if it has illness or injury, as an increasing number of ex-workers do, you will be talking an awful lot more than

Supporting an animal charity does not preclude supporting charities for people. There's no law against doing both. People who make this kind of comment tend not to do either. That last comment? Just offensive.

what does that emply.... i fecking love my dogs... As pets and workers.. Doesnt mean we have to go out and get a rescue pal... This post is going nowhere. It should be on a normal chat forum about animals. Unless you just meant getting one for a pet. And werent talking to the working dog men. I don't think he's implying anything, other than perhaps what he's saying. Which is: there is a choice as to where you get a lurcher and how you keep or don't keep it afterwards. The thread has gone four pages... And "working dog men"? Where do you think most of the dogs in rescue

Because if your current bitch is unspayed that indicates that you might breed in the future; not many rescues want their dogs bred from so they're unlikely to rehome a bitch to you other than a spayed one. Rescues don't want the dog population increasing any more. And if the other dog was being reserved, someone got there before you, is all.

IF people only bred dogs that were needed, wanted and had homes to go to: we wouldn't need rescues. IF people didn't treat the dogs they have as disposable toys: we wouldn't need rescues. IF people identified their dogs so that they could be got back to them when they were "lost" or "straying" because they got interrupted (What've you got to hide? It's only "lost" or "straying"!): we wouldn't need rescues. IF people didn't just dump their injured or poorly performing dogs but had the conscience or cojones to deal with them properly, we wouldn't need rescues. IF there weren't th

any one heard of a exmoor lurcher?

Another... belongs to someone I know. -
Like you LG I was town bred - but spent summers on a mixed farm in Devon. I was a lanky, pale, skinny kid and it was thought good for me. Found this... Me, aged about eight or nine I reckon, bringing home the herd for evening milking. The farm had pasture at the opposite end of the village, about half a mile away, and I would head off with the dogs (Bob and Bouncer) and bring the cows home. It used to be my "job" to make sure they were all lined up in the parlour, and I never felt threatened by them although I did get squashed a few times between cows and remember how bony their h

I sometimes get these "None shall pass!" moments... These are big girls, I'm about 5ft 10in tall and she's over my head. They're not so bad though; my lurcher totally ignores them but the staff I sometimes look after won't go past them. I had to chase this lot up the field (to the left) and get along the path (on the right), bustling the staff along, before they pootled back down again. They're quite docile once they've had their calves a while. They just get in the way! In Suffolk a while back the bull in with a herd of Red Polls took exception to us even being on the footpat

Yes, of course. Why would you not?

Added to picking up the pieces is the mentality that that is what rescues are for, as if owners have a right to count on rescues to clear up for them. I wish some owners would show the same level of loyalty the dogs do. And being disgusted and horrified at images such as these.... Jack does not make a fluffy pet owners or an anti, nor a PETA supporter, but just how much is a dogs life worth to some? Why are many rescues against new owners working their dogs? Because they see all too often the aftermath when a dog is no longer of use. They watch the coming and going of new fads, hence

Some rescue centres won't rehome to working homes; some will, but some won't. You do sometimes get puppies coming into rescue, though; some very young, and some born into rescue. There seem to have been a lot this year. Typically though a rescue lurcher will be a young dog between five months to a year old which may well have been tried and found wanting in some way... or maybe have an injury. Or else an older retiree. And often seen are "wastage" dogs from breeding programmes. Rescuing is VERY rewarding but you do need to have realistic expectations when you go into it. You will b

Things get worse... saw this on another forum. Such suffering, and what's the point? So upsetting... Upsetting pictures

This made me go cold... A number of years ago I was walking with my JRT in the street and a kid threw a firework just in front of us, which the dog picked up and started to bring back to me ... I screamed at him to leave it and he did, but it exploded underneath him and he was quite badly burned and obviously absolutely terrified. The kid ran off screaming and my other half at the time went looking for him later, but never found the little git. He was a steady dog before that, but following this incident he was gunshy, thundershy and obviously every bonfire night (not to mention

Was that "Jal"? My lad has done 14ft over that set-up, it's my fault he hasn't done longer: I can't keep his attention and he gets distracted... he'd do better I think if a lure ran underneath it, rather than doing a recall over it. Height he doesn't have an issue with!

There's an outbreak of parvo on the Norfolk coast at the moment. Horrible disease - hope it comes to a stop soon!

What have your dogs been mistaken for?
Fabapocalypse replied to PINNACLE's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I had a guy "Worked in kennels, on the tracks, man and boy" tell me my greyhound was fat... And in the street, a little kid dashed out of a shop, spotted us, did that little shriek thing they do and rushed back into the shop going "Mum! Muum!! Some kind of tiger or sunnink!" I also get "Is he retired?" and "Is he a rescue?" and also "I had a bitch just like her" when mine's a dog. The other one, when you explain to them, is "Oh yes my dad always had lurchers, but they were pedigrees." -
I was just reading this thread without signing in, so was a "guest"... Suddenly all the forums seem to be open to all to view - if you're not signed in you can't make a post but you can certainly read them all. This is new I think - the last couple of days?

Dear oh dear heaven forbid anyone - or any dog - should actually do something just for fun... Bah humbug. Quote from the "Introductions" board: "While we are a hunting forum any productive discussion is welcome." It's a good shot of a fit, happy dog.

Are you using Vista? It seems to make an auto back-up of everything you do and stores it, but then you can't delete it without messing up your system... If you're saying you've used 50Gb you know about and can't find the other 50Gb, maybe it's that.
