  1. I wonder how many of the "pounds round here" you spend any time in. I'm not far from you and can say from experience that of lurchers in the "pounds round here" most are young dogs under a year and many are injured or have been obviously badly cared for, or worse. You also see older dogs which it is fairly obvious are descending that spiral of being sold and passed on until they hit the pounds and shelters. Some can be rehabilitated and go on to have good lives; why shouldn't they? It's no skin off your nose, since to you they are "rubbish" anyway. It comes back to there being too many bre
  2. Staggering: yes. Surprising? No. I dread exercise on "nice" days and non-rainy Sundays because all the numpties will be out. If I had to compile a list of dogs owned by the daftest people, it would be: 1. Black or chocolate labs (the mehusive fat ones not the proper working ones);"they only want to play" 2. Rescued Greyhounds; "your dog's too fat/your dog's too thin/it's cruel to let yours run about like that and anyway mine won't come back if I let him off" 3. "Staff cross" anythings, the bigger and bulkier (and probably wheezier, and lame) the better; "Tyson! Get 'ere! Leave it! So
  3. I met a woman with one at the weekend. I asked her what age her pup was but she said it was 2 years old and was a 'miniture'. I have small dog (10 inches at he shoulder) her's looked really tiny and dainty standing beside him. I imagine it would have weighed about 5-6 lb. They cross JRTs with chihuahuas to get the size down... they're small alright but they also have a domed skull (the real giveaway), a short muzzle and weak jaws/dentition. And often the very bowed legs too. I've not seen one work but can't imagine chihuahua would add too much to the mix really... I'd stick to a st
  4. I dont think its just shit to be fair. Maybe it was just a question but theres to many folk just dying for there bitch to reach an age so they can breed and get pups, never mind if the dog is useless and the pounds are full of pups anyway.... Maybe a short sharp tongue lashing on THL might make folk think twice that pumping out pups is no the best way too go..... She only asked when would be the best time to breed her bitch and instead off some advice she has to take that shit. She has a young dog there and by the sounds off it it will get worked and well looked after and further down t
  5. No, course not. Don't you worry about it. They were all brought down from the skies in showers of rainbows by the lurcher fairy.
  6. Do you really need to breed "just one litter"? Does anybody? A check round the net today gives: 59 lurchers for sale on Epupz 115 lurchers for sale on FreeAds 276 lurchers for sale on Preloved 105 lurchers for sale on Pets4Homes 26 lurchers for sale on Adtrader 294 lurchers for sale on Oodle (Scotland only) 875 dogs, roughly. Ok not the most scientific way of doing it but however you look at it, that's a LOT of dogs. Enough, already. Then there's all those for sale on specialist sites like this; the "known name" line breeders; ads in newspapers; sold or given away amongst
  7. About £25 I think it was. You get two lengths of cord for different sized dogs. Just to add: you need a bike that has a "normal" downstem - as in with a round profile. If you've got one of the newer types with a flat, oval or oversize downstems, the bracket won't fit unless you can fit it on your seatpost but that would depend on the size of the bike (and dog!).
  8. We use a WalkyDog and you definitely get more control of bike and dog than you can manage with a lead in your hand or wrapped round the handlebars. We use a harness, too, rather than attach the dog by his collar, just in case there is a sudden stop or lunge forward. The WalkyDog does have a quick-release if it's needed. We found it was best to not run beside the bike in the evenings or early mornings because there's just too much prey about; this particular dog needs a constant speed of about 8-10mph with occasional faster bursts... Too slow and he starts looking about him for things to be
  9. Mine - made by other half. I don't do technical so I dunno what the motor is (Mini starter?) but you might be able to tell from the photo.
  10. Makes a change from "One of them Suzukis".
  11. Whose land was it? Whose horses are they? What happened to the horses? Can't imagine having a bull cross "hanging off their necks" did them much good either... Blimey.
  12. Ears are a lot easier to remove than microchips. Happens in the greyhound world a fair bit, poor beggars...
  13. I look after a staff sometimes; she'll chase rabbits and try and catch pigeons but I don't really think there's any intent there, she's a bit of a softy and gave herself a right old panic when she put up a pheasant and realised how big it was! There's a guy on here (Blackstaff?) who has a nice bitch a bit more into it, though.
  14. The Terrier Racing Roadshow used to run a manual, hand-pedalled large bike wheel set up on a continuous loop using plastic pylons to carry the "top" strand of cord above the dogs and the bike wheel behind the traps at the start - but they were running terriers only, competitively (I think they used to run the terrier racing championship at Chatsworth?) and doing short-distance arena displays with "run what you brung" at shows, I'm not sure how that would translate to longer distances and taller dogs!
  15. Would I be right in thinking that's Little'Un in your avatar?

  18. Done a bit! My old JRT used to love it. We did it at hunt terrier shows mainly, sometimes game fairs. It can be a bit chaotic, and that's just the owners! You need to make sure your dog has a good temperament though; fighting's no fun for anybody.
  19. I don't work my dog; I can't. He came to me broken (now mended but not up to a "proper job") and I'm not fit enough and unfortunately won't get any fitter. That doesn't mean I'm not interested. Should we meet something while we're out mooching, all well and good. I came into lurchers having had terriers for twenty years and joined THL because I wanted to learn more about lurchers from the point of view of what they are born and bred to do rather than from the purely "companion dog" angle; to understand what makes them tick. Well I've learned a lot of things and a fair amount isn't about lu
