  1. Errr.... nope, "cheetah" is not exactly the thought that pops into your mind when watching my dog run! "Was that an earthquake?!" is probably more like it. Bless him. He starts okay, if I don't mess it up for him, but then it all goes pear shaped. Hence the lure machine, for practice... I think there was some kind of an issue with the controller on the first test that resulted in burning out the motor. Something about the lure getting airborne and turning up at the finish far, far sooner than expected. We live and learn, and the machine won't get used near a dog until we're sure it's safe
  2. I've been looking this stuff up lately as I saw "something" crossing a lane in Suffolk a few weeks back; my dog didn't see it but he picked up the scent right enough when we crossed its path, and a tethered farm dog back along the lane went totally ballistic all of a sudden (it hadn't reacted to us walking close by). http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-38...t-shooting.html And many other shootings/sitings of dead'uns here: http://www.bigcatsinbritain.org/escapeandcaptures.htm
  3. Um, I dunno! I'll ask... a friend is building it for me. Because I'm not sure where I'll be setting it up, yet, and what the access will be like, he was trying to make something really light and portable for me, and I know there was an issue with his first go as it burnt out the motor and he had to start again with heavier duty stuff, and then the second go needed some kind of guard for the cable, but hopefully we'll be testing it this weekend. The control I think will be "thumb on the button" stop/go type thing. You may have guessed by now I'm not the most technical! All the racing I
  4. Thanks, sounds cool. Wish I was nearer, and wish our council were like that round here! Good luck for Sunday.
  5. Too far north for me, shame as it sounds a laugh. Do you book the land you run on specifically for you to use? 'Scuse me asking, it's just I have a friend building me a lure machine at the moment just for me and a few friends and I'm having to look for private land to rent to run on, as I've found that down here, as soon as you have any sort of gathering with dogs on public or public access land, somebody official turns up and starts muttering about public liability insurance, or else somebody unofficial turns up and wanders through the middle of it with a chihuahua on a flexilead... E
  6. I was there with a fundraising stall, it was so windy when we got there that we had to tie down the gazebo both sides to our cars! It was a good day though. Got nowhere in the showing (got pulled out in the bull cross class but no prize, sigh) but my lad thoroughly enjoyed the racing (6.97sec) and the long jump (14ft).
  7. Very pleased to report that Sasha has now been found, a bit muddy and with a couple of minor cuts and bruises but otherwise fine.
  8. Sasha, under foster for Southern Lurcher Rescue, slipped back past her fosterer as her lead was removed on return from a walk and ran off. Sasha was neutered four weeks ago, has separation anxiety and can be nervous of new situations. We need to get her home! Sasha is a smooth-coated cream coloured saluki cross of medium build and a distinctive liver coloured nose, about two years old. She is wearing a brown greyhound-type collar with tags and is microchipped to Southern Lurcher Rescue. There is a severe weather warning out and it has already been raining for some time in the area
  9. Mine was also called Sox by the rescue people (for the same reason) but he's a dog, so I have changed it to Sykes, as in the character in Oliver Twist because of the bull terrier connection... He answers to it, anyway... But then he also answers to Thingy... I liked Flicker: I think "Flicka" means "little girl" in Swedish which is kind of appropriate to how she looks in the photo.
  10. Lidl, £2.99... my nice bridle leather one has been purloined by the Staffie bitch in the background of the last pic who is, of course, a style queen... I promise I will get him a decent one this weekend. It's too rabbitty around where those pics were taken to let him run loose at the moment.
  11. Apologies if some of this ground has been covered before in other threads but I can't see a lot of the photos, which is driving me nuts! This is my new dog which I believe is greyhound/bull to some degree but he looks quite different to some on here so I just wonder if anyone has an idea, or if there are any similar about? I'd love to see more pictures...
  12. You may not be as dim as you think When Ian 'upgraded' the board there was a hiccup that seems to have lost some of the pictures that were uploaded as attachments, rather than links to hosted pics elsewhere. I think he's trying to fix it ......... Well that's kind of a relief anyway! It's very frustrating though when you see the [attachment] thingy, but no pic, and then everybody else saying, what a great looking dog, etc., etc.... I feel quite left out!
  13. When a picture is posted as an attachment... I can't work out how to see it! Can somebody explain it to me please without making me feel a complete twit (I'll accept part-twit if necessary)... Can't see anything in the help pages...
  14. Hey, thanks for your replies! My new dog is indeed from the Rhondda, or at least that's where I went to get him, and I don't think he's travelled much before... He's quite a powerful, solid dog but remarkably light on his feet for his size. He is chipped but the rescue people forgot to give me the number; I'm planning to take him to my vet in the next few days and they'll scan him for me and maybe I'll be able to find out where he's really from then, Data Protection Act willing. I wasn't sure if the "neck-nipping" was a natural play behaviour or not, as although I've been in contact with
  15. I've just adopted a rescue lurcher after sixteen years of terriers and I have a couple of questions: all assistance gratefully received! From what I know of the history of the dog he was originally a pet but it's possible there was an incident with something small and furry which resulted in him being sold on for £60 for rabbiting. This owner let him stray and he went from the pound to a foster home to me. There has been about seven weeks between his being found as a stray and him coming to me. He is between two and three; I'm waiting for more information from his microchip. He looks to m
  16. Not too far away... I could probably see Cheshunt if it wasn't absolutely tipping down...
  17. Hi everybody... new here. After sixteen years of much loved Jack Russells I have just (literally) acquired my first lurcher, a two year old rescue greyhound/bull terrier (Staffie?) cross from the Welsh Valleys all the way to Hertfordshire. He's gorgeous but a little unfit. We're just getting to know each other, so I thought we'd say hello...
