  1. Strange animals Shrews. Never known a dog that could follow their scent, seriously, even proven hunting dogs when out on a walk that would hunt anything. And ferrets do not like them. Strange little things.
  2. I remember the Beddy boom in the 80's, 90's. There were some genuine people around that were not looking for fame or fortune and just trying the breed and work Bedlingtons as proper terriers. I do not know if they or their dogs are still around but it will be a shame if both have gone. There were others around during that time. The plan seemed to be to buy a pair of Hunter wellies, a Barbour jacket, a Bedlington dog and bitch, and hey presto you were in the working Bedlington Terrier breeding business. The hard work was done during the Summer months at working terrier shows holding court
  3. 19" and 28lbs, kind of sums up the enigma that is/was the working Bedlington. It would take a brave and dedicated man with a long term plan to use a dog of such a size with the intension of producing working terriers. A better prospect for producing lurchers, but the risk being that such a large dog had much smaller ones in it's make up. I know that they were famous dogs in the kennel of one the most respected terrier men of all time, just find Bedlingtons an odd/fascinating breed.
  4. If you're ok then then you're ok. Do not overthink it. If you're f****d then you probably will always be f****d. Diet has nothing to do with it. Deal the cards that you have been dealt. The only person who made me doubt myself was a Czech ballet dancer that turned my world upside down when I met her. My eating habits, my morals my ethics. She tried but failed to make me a better person. I ended up saving her life in more ways than one.
  5. All these years of ignoring popular medical advice and continuing to eat bacon sandwiches and beef steak, that has caused no end of domestic grief, not to mention a nagging doubt at the back of my mind that they could all be right. Who do I sue? Apparently, according to a medical professional friend of mine, it is not possible for a human being to be a 100% vegan as we cannot survive without certain things that are not available from plants. Even yeast, from an idealist ethical point of view is classed as an animal. But let them have their day. When land goes over from meat and cere
  6. Looking at the pics she looks like was a type that was once certainly popular. I don't recall anyone using the term fell type though and they tended to be referred to as border/lakelands. At least were I lived. Coincidently I bumped into an old friend a few days ago who used to keep and work that type. He no longer has them, more into ESS' and out of he terrier game unfortunately, the only earth dog he has now is a teckle.
  7. The years have not been kind to Craig David. Shamone mutha fuckas

    CURRY

Empire and colonialism is a complicated subject. Where people planted their flags in the 18th, 19th centuries still resonates today. I try not bother myself with problems other than the ones that knock on my door these days, but when I sit down to a chicken or king prawn vindaloo, restricted to twice a week, I give silent thanks to the Honourable East India Company.
  9. Sir Edwin Landseer was once asked the secret of his animal paintings. He replied that he gives them human eyes. Not sure if I agree with that, and he was possibly doing himself a dis-service. Possibly capturing the character and soul of the animal in it's eyes would have been a more accurate explanation. Landseer had that talent and so does your daughter. A talent to be encouraged.
  10. The Working Terrier Yearbook 1978. Some people may find the image unacceptable but it is a drawing not a photograph. Maybe some artistic licence came into play and the artist was not from the UK for sure. I am not condoning bull baiting. Working dogs do different jobs from decade to decade and differ around the globe. The closest thing that I have seen to this was a lowly collie type dog doing his job when parking up on some permission. Two young but fully grown bulls (can't remember the breed) in the same field properly went for it. The farmer appeared with a collie dog and observe
  11. Nice drawing, looks very much like the work of this artist
  12. I did not draw it ? I just remembered some very nice pencil sketches of Staffords that had been posted on THL in the past and thought that I knew were to find them but could not. No probs.
  13. I read your post and thought I knew where to find the drawing that you were thinking of. But could not so started searching again. It ended up doing me napper. Here's a random drawing of Staffs anyway. From Shaun Barkers Staffordshire Bull Terriers - English and Irish
  14. Possibly 2 Borzoi and a Deerhound type in 3rd pic down
  15. I thought Sloughi type but have greyhound ears and almost muscle development.Maybe he got the human element right but finished the paintings back home using greyhounds as subjects.
  16. This may well be the worst photograph posted on THL or at the very least the most tenuous of links to the topic. If you look very closely in the top right hand corner the arse end of the large hairy dog is an AW Deerhound. In my defence I was photographing the two black Fells on couples. Tow Law show if I remember correctly circa 1984. By all accounts those Deerhounds did not only do what you would expect such an animal to do but also took numbers of rabbits on the lamp that would put a purpose bred Lurcher to shame.
  17. Something that I saw in the canteen on a site visit this week was 2 microwaves. 1 designated General and the other Vegan. I have a photograph and was going to share but there are strict rules as to what you can do with images taken and posting on social media is a big No No so bottled it. I don't have long left on the treadmill and don't want to risk getting pumped at this stage. The lads on site are a mix of Geordie, Makem and Smoggy tradesmen and labourers. Not being sexist by using the word "lads" but the strive for sexual equality does not often extend to lasses wanting to graft thei
  18. Are adding enough JD to it? Still tastes fine to me
  19. Is the type of coat that these dogs have not something that original breeder desired in his terriers? Going back to my original post on this thread, was D B Plummer's intention not to improve on the earth dogs that he started with, as earth dogs, with but to create the ultimate rat catching dog.? Catching large numbers of rats in filthy places, indoors usually, and such a coat was a desirable attribute? The muck did not stick and was easily cleaned afterwards. I do not really understand when people criticise the type as earth dogs as surely that's not why other blood was added. Are they
  20. I have a question. Were Mr. George Newcombe's Lakeland terriers KC registered? Something that always puzzled me. I know (did know the man though) that he persevered as long as possible with his KC Bedlingtons before outcrossing but anyone know about the Lakelands?
  21. Thank you for answering fireman. My question was to people who regularity hunt and catch hundreds of rats. Something that I have not done. The Russells that I have hunted with have never been found lacking in scenting ability or courage, but, I have not done that kind of rat catching. So do not know if the Plummer is better or not at that job than a "unimproved" terrier.
  22. Has the type that existed before been improved? A genuine question. I did not know D B Plummer and have no axe to grind. Some say he developed this type on an ego trip wanting fame and a sort of immortality. But some of it makes sense. As much as I know is that the type originated from existing working Russell types that were found lacking in nose and courage. Beagle was introduced to improve nose and fighting dog for courage. Some Russells can hunt like Beagles. If a certain line was lacking in that department outcross to a terrier line that has nose or do not continue the line. Wh
