My "new" terrier. About 12 month old in the picture, will be 8 years old next month. FFS...Time and tide really does not wait ! :-)

It may be that the Border as a working terrier is going the way of the Dodo but I'm sure that there are people still quietly going about their business keeping them going. I would say though that the Border has had more of an influence on the modern working types that many people are aware of or would like to admit. I think it is wrong to generalise when it comes to terriers as to how they work. If you have a good Border then he is too hard etc. It depends on the family of dogs, not really the "breed" that dictates how they work. What the Border has always brought to the table are good coats a

The Tommy Dobson photo is a famous one Pablo. The terriers have always been described as Lakeland/Patterdale types and allegedly Dobson introduced Bedlington blood into his dogs. Who knows for sure?

A few more classified pages from the recent (?) past. I have always found the dogs at public stud thing fascinating. How much influence have certain dogs had on breeds/types by being available to anyone with the price of the stud fee? Not that I've ever had anything that would warrant being put at public stud but even if I had it's my worst nightmare. Strangers/idiots/time wasters, not to mention those with hidden agendas being invited onto your property. Is it still a thing?

That exact same TYPE is still kept in Ireland to this day 2017.. same size looks and coat. John Gaunt, or as he was also known John Weldon, the saw mills rat catcher was said to keep a fox terrier type. Would the terrier in your pic be a fox terrier type ? Not sure if you are referring to the old pic I posted Neil or something that Stop end has posted? If it is the old photo then I don't know exactly when it was taken, looks late 19th/early 20th century? At that time the KC Fox Terrier had not travelled too far down the path of exaggeration and misinterpreted written breed standar

A neighbour got themselves a Kerry Blue and I have seen it almost daily since it was a pup. About 14 month now. Physically it's not a bad sort but obviously massive. My God though it's a strange one temperament wise. Never makes a sound, never wags it's tail, never makes eye contact with me. Just totally focussed on my terrier. Good job they keep it on a lead. And it's a bitch.

A few more old classified ads. I know that the quality of the scans are crap but despite the fact that these are from old almost forgotten about mags I can't bring myself to vandalise them by taking the staples out and scanning them on a more suitable machine. The one the I find most interesting is in At Stud. "IMPORTED Kerry Blue, the gamest dog on Merseyside. Will protect if needed. Now at stud..." A strange one. It was from 1985.

"John Gaunt of Derby, rat-catcher to the Midland Railway Company, whose tame foxes assisted him in his duties." They have been called many things throughout the years, hunt terriers, Fox Terriers, Jack Russells, Parson Russells or just plain old white dogs. I'm not suggesting that they are all of an ancient lineage with nothing added over time (despite what the deluded owners of £600 KC Parson's are led to believe) but the "type" endures.

Out today in the local and got bored with watching the shite that was passing for football on the tele and got into a conversion/discussion/argument with a travelling lad who was passing through. I have seen an advert for the dog we were talking about being at public stud at one time. Went home to find the advert and got distracted. I have tried to scan some old classified ads from the Shooting News. Early to mid 1980's. I found them interesting but don't know if the scans are readable or interesting to anyone else. The mixes of types (they did not walk off the Ark), the Bull sorts that w

"I'm only an old working terrier, who over the years has got slow. But in days gone by I ran with hounds, and was once even best in show." Not mine, unashamedly borrowed from a picture caption in Eddie Chapman's The Real Jack Russell. Not really a poem and maybe loses a bit without the accompanying photograph in the book. But I have always liked it.

I don't agree with the title "The End is Nigh" simply because fools and their money have always been easily parted. Whatever fools spend their money on will have no effect on the continuation of working terriers, the threat comes from people who unfortunately aren't fools and are very skilled at influencing the fool. But I agree the dog market is laughable in regards what is being bred now and the money that people are more than willing to pay. I saw a young couple out yesterday (on land that 20 year ago I would never see a another soul but now accept that other dog walkers and bicyclists

A Daystate PH6 from 1996. The brass cocking handle is after market, the tiny black toggle that Daystate produced was a travesty on rifle of this quality. My only other criticism is the fixed mag. Obviously the only way of emptying to make safe after use is to fire clean, I have always felt it to be a wasteful and amateurish method but a necessity. One of the first multi-shots though so not a bad effort from Daystate and a very useful rabbiting tool. Semi retired now as I much prefer my AA Pro Sport. Not a better rifle but just a personal choice. A friend has places on particular permissions wh

Why is it that people who are obviously not accustomed to physical exercise decide that the best time to go for a run or a bike ride is on a day in July without a breath of wind when the Sun is beating down ? Why is it that people with dogs that are obviously not accustomed to physical exercise decide the best time to take them on a long walk and throw balls for them is a day in July without a breath of wind when the Sun is beating down ? Why do grown men feel no shame when using a mechanical aide to launch a ball for a fat Labrador, stating to his family and the rest of the world that

From a purely historical point of view in the UK the opposite could apply. A Jack Russell experienced with badger would sometimes employ heavier handed tactics when used on fox, yet never showing recklessness on the heavier quarry. The terrier seeming to know the respective capabilities of his opponent. So I was told.

I can picture the scene, Parson John Russell, Arthur Heinman, and Mr. Chapman having a bit dog craic. R.I.P..

It did get some use Mark. Mostly lamping rabbits and there was absolutely nothing wrong with it. Just not for me. A good effort by Webley though at the time.

This one has lived in my gun safe for 30 years. A Webley Omega .22 Carbine purchased when new for the princely sum of £99.99. I found the introduction of the rifle a bit of a pleasant surprise. At the time it looked to me as though the British air rifle manufacturing industry was about to follow our car and motorbike industry down the pan. The same mistakes seemed to be being made in that the same tired old designs were being churned out with build and material used sometimes of dubious quality. The foreign opposition, namely German, were leaving us in their wake. Then Webley did something

When we got back on the coach to travel home we found a few live pigeons inside. 1 of the lads had nabbed a few in Trafalgar Square. Some people didn't see the funny side ☺ Filthy skemmies and their shit everywhere, just about sums London up!

Digging Dogs. Figure/ornaments
eastcoast replied to resistance's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Only asked because I've seen lots done in jet, no working dog related unfortunately, but not much in coal. I know jet is coal, but not the sort that we used to put in the hearth :-) -

The figures carved in coal that have been referred to, are they in coal or Jet ? -
