  1. Yes pretty much spot on with whats happening. Thanks for everyones input on this thread. Ive taken her out a few times since I started this thread but conditions have not been ideal. Maybe ill have to wait till October time now. I wont give up on her though.....
  2. ok thanks for the advice and the offer from look up of taking us out to show us the ropes, I may take you up on it yet. Just to clarify, if I see rabbit at aboutb 100yrds do I quietly walk up to it keeping lamp on the whole time? Or Walk up about half way with lamp off then flick beam back on to see where its at? I don't mind going out and just seeing what works best, but its handy to have at least a small idea what to do.....
  3. Makes sense, cheers for the advice. I've got as much to learn as the dog.....
  4. Is 50yrds a bit too far away to be slipping?
  5. If its taken you 6 months to get the re-call right it will take you 27 years to cover the rest of its education,it won,t be around then mucker, speed up the education process and get the initial slips down to a few easier yards, your input is negating the dogs ability, gen up mucker.I got her at 6months old and she had some bad habits, hence why it took me ages getting recall.I'll stick with her though till she starts catching on the lamp. Day work is not a problem.
  6. I'm in cambridge, I'll hopefully get out with her a few more times locally and see how we get on. Thanks for the offer though, going out with someone experienced would be ideal....
  7. I took my bitch out for her first time on the lamp. I know its late to be taking her out, but I spent the last 6 months getting recall up to a decent level. So we got to the meadow and her first run was on a sitter at about 50yrds. I thought it was a dead cert, but she ran straight past it! This sort of thing happened every time I slipped her or rabbit made it to cover before she got close enough. I called it a night before I got too annoyed with her. I've done a fair bit of training with reflective dummy's etc and she's been pretty good. Different ball game on the real thing th
  8. Im using an mtc mamba on air rifle. Im considering a second mtc scope but wondered what other people find works well with nitesite nv gear. I have found the mamba is ok for close range ratting work but not so great for longer range work with the rimmy.... If anyone else has any suggestions I would be glad to hear from them
  9. Can anyone advise on which scopes work well with the nitesite viper? Ive got a Niko Stirling Mount Master on my .17 HMR but it has to be the worst scope ive ever used. So I am looking out for a new scope. Any recommendations that are proven to work well with nitesite sub £400
  10. Ah ok thanks for all the advise. Ive been doing some training with a dummy and a lamp, she gets the idea just doesn't always look down the lamp.... Ill wait till the grounds thawed a bit and the moon is not so bright. The meadow I plan to take her on is pretty flat, but there's not loads of rabbits. Ive checked it out a few times around 9pm and seen only a few, real close to the hedges too.... Maybe I would be better to try around midnight or later? She is just over 1 year old. Ive had her 9 months now. Recall was really bad, but now its almost spot on. Im chuffed with that alone
  11. I think my dog is about ready for her first night out on a lamp. It will be first time for me too. How close do I need to be to a rabbit before I slip her? 50yrds or closer?
  12. Sounds like some good advice wild rover, my dog is about a year old now, I'll give it a try though. Need to get recall sorted too....
  13. No dpb82uk, unfortunately her recall is s**t at the moment. I know I need to get this sorted before I can take her out. Lots of work to be done.....
  14. Hope its not going to be too much of a problem but my dog is already about a year old (I never had her from a pup) Ill follow the advice on here and see how she gets on Thanks for all the replies
  15. I am trying to train my dog to work on the lamp, the thing is she doesn't seem to know she needs to look down the beam. At these early stages I have been training her in the garden with a rabbit fur covered tennis ball. (I heard this is a good way to start) Instead of being by my side looking forward and down the beam she stands in front of me watching for my arm to move and the ball to be thrown. Needles to say she is my first dog and we both have a fair bit to learn. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
  16. Well im still persevering with her and am determined not to give up on her. Just re-read previous posts and Im going to go right back to basics with her this weekend, following the methods desert bred and bossun mentioned. The thing is ive got the permission to take her out on but with the way her recall is at the moment I know I would probably end up losing her. She comes to work with me every day and I would say we have built up a good bond, its just when she feels she can catch something her instinct takes over and ignores me.
  17. Hi all, Found THL while looking for tips on training my Lurcher, found lots of really helpful information. Also like shooting bunnies and generally spending time in the field. Looking forward to the winter and getting the dogs recall good enough to take her out lamping for the first time.
  18. Brilliant, makes perfect sense, thanks for all the replies. I forgot to mention she is a rescue and I've had her about 5 months now, she's about 1 year old. If I had known Saluki crosses can be so much hassle I may have got a different cross, but as was said earlier her prey drive is really high and im sure she will turn out to be a great dog. She was completely untrained in any way when I got her (she thought it was acceptable to eat out of pots and pans ready to go on the cooker) when I think back she has came on a long way since then. Plenty more time and effort on my part then.
  19. I am having recall problems with my saluki cross, she has perfect recall in house and garden but, the problems start in the field when there are squirrels and game about. So if she thinks there is something she may be able to chase/catch she will ignore me trying to recall her until she is ready to come back in her own time. Sometimes she comes back in a minute or so sometimes its much longer or at worse I have to wait till she is so worn out that I can then catch her! Far from ideal.... When she does finally come to me I am not sure weather I should be praising and giving a treat to
