Starting your lurcher correctly
scouse moocher replied to labsnlurchers's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
The advice given is just that .. Advice. I'm sure there are plenty of people who's dogs have started work and proved themselves at a young age and i'm not knocking them. But a young dog is at a higher risk of being damaged. The above is just a summary of one mans method of bringing on a lurcher pup, of which there are many - tried, tested, productive, good, bad and indifferent. Ant -

Starting your lurcher correctly
scouse moocher replied to labsnlurchers's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Very good advice mate and anyone with a young lurcher or has just picked up their first dog would do well to take note. No doubt theres dogs out there who were entered at an early age and are still working effectively, but the bad'uns far outweigh the good'uns in my experience. Im a youngun' myself and i know how it feels to be itching to get out and work a pup - perseverance pays off and your dog at 2-3 years old will be a true reflection of the work and time you have put into him. Do right by your dog and he'll do right by you. Ant -
Dog owners worst nightmare .. It spreads like wild fire and theres nothing you can really do to treat it .. as said kids benelyn or honey can sooth it .. My wire haired vizsla started with it a few weeks ago and its STILL in my kennel with a litter ive got on at the minute.. I start them on Synulux to prevent secondary infection but its just got to run its course

Yorkshire terriers- do people work them
scouse moocher replied to ssssh1forthepot's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Like most terriers i'm sure at one point the breed was used for purpose i.e pest control. The breed standard set by the Kennel Club alone is enough to suggest the breed would not be up to the task of meeting the standards required by the terrier men today. I'm sure 100 years ago the breed was more capable and a better built stamp of dog. I can see how westies and scotties could still be useful but i think you'd find it hard to find anyone with a proven working bloodline belonging to any terrier / hound that has been bred with so much cosmetic emphasis for so many years. Small Type Jack Russells
scouse moocher replied to scouse moocher's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Is right lads havent been on the tinterent for a few days some good pics there .. Everyone seems to be singing off the same hymn sheet there dont seem to be that many small working stock around .. The jacks i keep i use just for ratting - the majority of the pups go to pet homes. Not very good at putting pics up but here's a couple of my ratters. -
Just wondering how many of you lads work the shorter legged type of Jack? i.e 8 - 10 '' high .. I've seen many keen ratters of this type but wondering wether anyone works them to ground, If so throw some pics up of your dogs. Ant

Spot on Skycat. I sold a mate of mine called me a few weeks ago puzzled at the fact his bitch had come into season just 6 weeks after whelping a litter. He even used to bloody discharge coming out her back end as proof. Another friend bred a bitch and kept 3 pups back, his yard is run with a 'let them get on with it' frame of mind and the weaned naturaly by mum who was fed on raw food. Not my idea of how to raise a good litter but each to their own ... the pups were ran on with mum and his other dogs untill 10 months when they started going coursing and it was then when the bitch had

Ive posted on one of the other threads mate about a dud stud dog try http://www.fitandfertile.com/ for info this guy does mobile feritlity testing of both dogs and bitches, artificialy inseminated and freezes semen, very reasonably priced too. Although both the dam and the sire are proven theres loadsa things that could play a factor in conception, or lack of. Physical form of both, possible infection in either the bitch or dogs reproductive system etc.... Maybe next time if your happy both dogs are in good condition and your ready for a litter you should try A.I with a good ovulation t

pregnant border terrier
scouse moocher replied to bucknut's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
How did you get on mate? As people have said some bitches will always go a few days before or over when in pup. With this being her first litter i imagine your more anxious! As said before monitor her temperature as this can be a good indication of when shes going to pop. Also all the signs you will of read in the books, restlessness, scratching and re-arrangement of newspapers or blankets and general nesting and going off her food ( a few hours before she whelps) That being said nothings ever textbook with breeding ive had a bitch eat a full bowl of food with gusto and 10 minutes later st -
Alright mate have a look at this website http://www.fitandfertile.com. Guy called Keith Shea based in lancashire. Known as the scan man he comes out and scans bitches at your home. Also does alrtificial insemination, ovulation evaluation of bitches and tells you exactly what day to be meeting eggs with sperm and also does fertility testing on stud dogs. Hes a very handy fella to know and as far as im aware travels all over the country so may be worth booking him when hes down your end. I used him to inseminate one of my pug dogs to a bitch that refused to stand. He collected the semen an

They buy in from breeders as far as i am aware. I think if if you sell a dog its the decent thing to offer help in the rehoming of it should the new owners circumstances ever change. Cheers john, i was a bit dubious to be honest but Ive spoke to the liverpool rep for the princes trust and shes very positive about the whole thing. But at the end of the day it has to go before a panel to be sanctioned worthy of any financial backing. Even if its just business advice i get from them its a start.

Tis true the interenet has had an incredible impact on the sale of dogs . . and everything else nowadays for that matter. The method of buying litters in is the only way to run it if its on a big scale. Breeding, as much as i love it and all thats involved takes time, risks involved are much higher and it can be alot more complicated. Most breeding establishments that provide puppies all year round will more often than not also hold a pet shop license with their council. The leagel requirement to be able to buy litters of puppies with the intention of re-selling them. My business advisor

Aye mate the general location is usualy Wales, Scotland and Ireland the shops use agents as third parties to collect and asess whats for retail. Ive also heard of shops in the south recruiting agents to scout for cheap litters of pups and buy them as pets from breeders, then pass on to their employer for re sale. But aslong as shops and outlets buy from puppy farms they will continue to churn them out. The way i look at it is reputation is paramount in any business and its something i hope to never be assosciated with for all the obvious reasons . Welsh farmers where actualy given diversi

Many happy returns mate

Cheers mate As far as the price of dogs go's nowadays there are ALOT of over priced breeds even from individual breeders, i seen a litter of jack russells last week for £450. Ive sold a lot of cross breeds and hybrid breeds in the past and have often found the people interested in the cross have never shown an interest of have any desire to own either breed included in its parentage. Labradoodles being a classic example I have been in the past but just out of interest, and was very impressed with what i saw. I've a lot more market research to do so will be paying them a visit in the n

I agree. The concept and running of mayfield kennels its self is why i imagine my business to do well. Joe Bloggs generaly has no specification apart from maybe jus the breed of dog its self, which as you very rightly pointed out is a far cry from working dog men, hence the reason i have never tried to cater to this market. People are interested in the finished product as long as the pup is healthy and of breed standard they seem more than happy to 'shop' for a new dog. Dogs4US is now a both a superstore offering boarding, grooming and whole sale facilies and is opening a second branch i

Im a young lad trying to start my own business. Ive been brought up around dogs, training, tracking, manwork, breeding whelping, the list goes on ... Ive bred bought and sold dogs since i was 14 and for the record, that does not include working dogs. Im now looking into doing this as a business from licensed premesis. Puppy sales and dog breeding in general has and i presume always will be a taboo subject, people are very against puppy farms ( as am i ) and immediatley associate the sale of pups from shops or commercial premesis with puppy farms It seems the only business for compa
