  1. plummer used to rubbish salukis all the time. then suddenly got a sal cross ? mind you he was a funny f****r. I been very fortunate to have run nothing else so I love em. my thought is the modern linebred coursing dogs are our version of the saluki. coursing dogs offer loads to the modern all round lurcher. the revers offers nothing to the modern coursing dog. out cross to pure saluki now and then cant go wrong. atb two crows.
  2. a top ngrc trainer once said to me only the good dogs seem to get injured. atb two crows.
  3. leave her till march find it a leveret or two if you can. don't think about lamping till its started day time otherwise it will be certain to stop at cover. pures mature slower than crosses so be patient if you can. if not let someone have it who is for her sake. atb two crows.
  4. I just read this from start to finish (only cos its raining) a wise man once wrote that a dog bred to kill hares will catch more rabbits than a dog bred to catch rabbits will kill hares. and we aren't talking about blinding them first. when I first started with running dogs it was because our mongrel couldnot catch a hare. she had loads of rabbits so I thought in my childs eyes a whippet would fit the bill. what I ended up with was a beddy whippet cross pure saluki. I still don't think in forty odd years I realy had one better. she was brought up mouching and ferreting and did very well but he
  5. like your young dog mate he has what it takes to be a real gooden. hopefully see him again this winter . I got a hand full of runs with the pup right at the end tight land hard ground loads of cover she stopped 3 so cant wait. if I could put a pic on I show you what she's turned into lol .atb two crows.
  6. one of mine used to rip its mouth to pieces' you could put it on the lead walk hundreds of yards but as soon as you let her off she would go back and kill it . mad bugger' atb two crows
  7. greyhound saturated lurchers need luck and lots of it. very few hares (THAT ARENT KICKED UP THAT IS) are killed on the run up and any dog with more greyhound than saluki will start to struggle after a few bends. I have bred first crosses that were decent dogs day and night .but bred better ones using saluki sires and sal cross sires over these than greyhound sire. fact is greyhounds cant stay. 1150m sounds a long way but it is nothing to an average coursing lurcher never mind a gooden which can if needs be do that multiple times in a day. after all who wants to drive 3 hours to Lincoln for o
  8. listen not every fieldsportsman likes every other field sport. shooting forms part of my living I shoot foxes its my job' and I see it as such not a sport. I cant stand the fact that police forces grant people who don't own a shoot' have game keeping interests' ore livestock etc a certificate to use a full bore rifle for fun' but It happens so I live with it. dog work is my passion picking up' terriers' hounds' and I like a bit of coursing to' so if you don't like toffs hunting on horseback that's tough' united we stand divided we fall. atb two crows
  9. first time I went lamping was with an older bitch slipping on rabbits that looked massive and so obvious to me' she could not see em though . but as soon as I started walking her up and just quietly sising her on the penny dropped. I now lamp all mine' but being a day man I start that first and have never had a problem entering one to the lamp since. and despite popular belief coursing dogs make passable lampers. atb two crows.
  10. I only ever hunted hares and rabbits. he was a good dog on hares and did not need a fen to kill one.as he could catch on small land as well as big open ground. and for a 27" dog he cought loads of rabbits on the lamp' (carrying back as well) he was a clever dog to' often running out wide on the lamp and coming in from the dark. atb two crows.
  11. was mate absolutely relentless' he had gears to when he remembered to use em atb two crows.
  12. Best advice given that you. got any pics of him? Very durable allround lurchers if allowed yes I have they are a bit dark and old (80s) I see if someone can put them up for me atb two crows.
  13. I hope your dog is a star. my advice is forget he is a pure! and run him like a lurcher course him' lamp him' hunt him' enjoy him' find his strengths and weaknesses! and use them to get the best from him. I once got a cream gifted to me by a lad who rescued him' he went to see someone about buying a lamping dog' when he got there luke barked at him and the bloke kicked him under the table matey just put the lead on him and left. (without the lamper') first time I took him out lad I was with said so and so said it cant run! he did 3 from 4. the best he did was seven from nine' I lamped him'mouc

  15. Fuji I pick up about 30 days a year with my cockers the dog is home bred out of my old bitch to openshaws danderw druid who sired a cocker championship winner then won it him self. I personaly think cockers cover an area more thoroughly and stay on better . having said that to be fare I never owned a springer atb two crows.
  16. any one got one can use him no probs. atb two crows
