  2. I think your right shaaark iv,e thought that for a long time about crusaders they would not of been able to resist it, but England a thousand years ago would be no place for saluki's, all forest and the fens were fens back then. back in the 1960's gypsies that still lived in horse drawn wagons still looked just like that. lovely old photo'e.
  3. my position is for coursing. as a coursing man for close to fifty years. I have never been to or condoned hare shoots, however before the ban we coursed an estate in Lincolnshire that used to have two hare shoots on two consecutive weekend's and shot close to a thousand hares, these all going to the game dealer. we always went after this had happened and had several fantastic days sport. hares in these numbers cant be supported for long before they start to suffer, and the estate finances suffer also, no amount of dog work can keep this sort of a population in check, so hate it as I most certa
  4. like a lot of you lads ive worked hard on the trowel seven long days at times for months on end, traveling round the sites to bring up the kids. then stopt the fags bought a little place with a couple of acres started working more to suit my self, began keepering (just as a hobby) 10,000 partridges and 20 pluss shoot days a yeare single handed, did that for years now I just look after a small place and work dogs all season with as much building as I feel like, my running dogs have never cost me anything only my sanity. atb two crows.
  5. a few years ago I went with a mate to some land he had the rabbiting on we lamped several fields and worked our way back to the motor, and were met by the keeper from the next land and a gang of his bread'n cheese men, and to be fare he was ok but one of his mates kept saying ive got the reg ive got the reg and waveing a bat around so I said to the keeper if you don't shut him up i'le stick that bat up his arse. now this could of got messy very quick, but the keeper was scared and needed to come mob handed. I used to be a singlehanded keeper on a commercial partridge shoot right in the fens an
  6. I had dogs in the seventies that could, saluki bred dogs when most others in my area were still messing with deerhound crosses. dogs like mine (and probably some of mine) started what we have today, no big ego's then just hard run dogs.
  7. I have had sals that look like they need rescuing no matter what u do. jen first crosses are often the same. yet most of the quality line bred stuff builds up a treat. no good me talking about diet mine only gets bread and gravy lol. atb two crows.
  8. I go picking up a lot with my spaniels through the season and on one shoot in particular they wait until the very last minute for the last drive, and I have to pick up in pitch black they think ime brilliant. I don't let on I learnt that bit of the job with a running dog. they often ask why I bite runners heads but I don't tell'em that either lol. presumably your just picking up in the dark to atb two crows.
  9. some very interesting answers, I personally think every day lurcher's are generally the same however in my youth the men that had them were genuine dog men, I don't remember any idiots having em' not like today games full of jack'ases. ive always had coursing dogs' and dogs back in the seventy's (mine anyway ) were ran to get them fit and were awesome hare killers, I some times wish I could have one back and condition it how it's done now, and see if it would be better or not. but I must say hand on heart the line bred coursing stuff about today would take some beeting in any era. atb two crow
  10. back in the early seventy's I bred some very good dogs with saluki greyhound and beddy whippet in them my best ever being a beddy whippet to a full suluki dog she was mother to some very good dogs but none of my breading went to beddy again so coats were allways smooth. however when salukis first started to influence coursing they were crossed with allsorts of lurchers to improve there coursing ability. and have been refined ever since. so like already said wooly coat could come from anywhere and the gene has locked in and if a wooly is a good dog and is bred from it will allways come out in s
  11. mine always get a warm meal at tea time, extra large after working all day. in dead of winter I have had spaniels get in a right mess after water work realey good to give hot broth gets em warmed through, mine are more than working dogs.so I treat mine like mates. atb two crows.
  12. once had one fly straight down the beam straight to hand. we don't get many on our shoot, but its surprising how many dogs wont pick'em my cockers love'em little dog pegs one regular on woodland shoot I pick up on. atb two crows.
  13. trouble is most oilseed rape is drilled direct in stubble at harvest time, ignorant wankers don't even know there doing it.
  14. we have had it just recently the farmer is digging out all entrances not used by them and gates on all others, it will put hours on the feeding round and make foxing a pain opening gates all the time. and dogs would be stopped to if I did not have them who ever it is are just wankers end of .
  15. we used to go to grassington or beadale nearly every week at one time very rarely missed the ton. rabbits just seemed to be a spit under the turf. I allways liked a big hob for there, seemed to take the stick better. atb two crows
  16. lamping a golf club one night near a main road with a mate and a vehicle pulled up we heard doors going and women gigleing kev said goo on light em up well ther were knickers round ankles trying to get back in the van sceems of laughter, they sped off we were in tears we had to call it a night. atb two crows.
  17. got pulled one night just going up a dead end to pick my mate and the bag up, copper said what you doing up there well quick as a flash I said ive been riding round all afternoon I lost my greyhound its worth 3 grand and ime sick as a pig, so he looked in the van seen the straw and said he would ask the day shift to keep there eys open, when I left him I said oh by the way ile just ride up to the rugby club for a last look, kev was already on his way he new the drill we loughed all the way home.atb two crows.
  18. most dog men are far from perfect. and most dogs can do something well, but you sometimes have to adapt how you work to find it. atb two crows.
  19. when I used to lamp regular it was home made lamps and always dimish never show game to much field. and you don't want to be clearing the next one while lamping this one. atb two crows.
  20. your right there DB my old cream dog was 9 and still impressive, very cagey clever old lad. atb two crows.
  21. ive seen pups as young as seven months kill good hares and take no harm, ide be more worried about mentally ruining a pup through overfaceing it than ruining it physically. and a realy young pup will conk out then go again not do himself harm whilst playing. I think some people worry to much. atb two crows.
  22. I bred a few first crosses (sal grey) good enough for most folk/jobs. put back to saluki are better. but as already said line bred stuff all the way. and for what these are bred for nobody anywhere in the world has better. atb two crows.
  23. in the early 70s when I was a boy I bred a litter of lurchers from a whippet beddy cross full saluki bitch, back to a whippet dog. these pups used to fight like f**k a bloke came all the way from leister to buy one, there were two dog pups left. when all hell broke loose he said ive never seen pups fight like that ile have em both. atb two crows.
