I think you be ok if you want a all rounder with the fox as a priority cross with a heavy hitter you be on the money for me.
-
spot on that the difference is tremendous, but any one who watched the waterloo cup must realise that a good lot of that speed is not needed, all that does is blow the dog up, I recon that a good fast type coursing dog offers far more to lurcher breeding than the greyhound ever could, there fast, durable, agile, coursing clever, great recovery, and have stamina to spare , add a base breed and you have a recipe for success, all a greyhound has is pace.

black neck I just put plates on for Monday trusses came and I jacked to fkn hot put slates on my dog place last week could not touch em so hot. -
when I was a boy most of the lurchers in my area were deerhound based, and decent dogs in reality, but I was a smug little b*****d cos I got a saluki lurcher, and at that time 1969 there were very few, and they were out standing for brown hares, these little dogs were clever, they could take control of a course and actually slow a hare down, and manipulate it and more or less take it out at will, unless you take in a course and understand what's happening its easy to think the dog is struggling, its not, that's why those that understood, took it to there hearts and now we have what we have, t

I think it is wrong to say it cant be done by a dog without saluki blood any where, but you must realize those dogs are rare, that's why a specialist was bred and refined over the last 50 years.
-
I knew some one would come out with that I answered that in an earlier post but if that was all that was required we all would have a grew lurchers would be redundant lol
-
I like em I have bred and run a few all decent, they mabe lack a bit of wind compared to line bred don't know why, but they .will tackle anything, and can make decent all rounder's.
-
I think the quality is more consistent.
-
not at all but line bred dogs and pures often click and produce very good dogs, but we need to be carefull and not over do things, once in four or five generations is sufficient, other wise what we have may be spoiled.
-
no a pure is generally slower but can stay for ever, the line bred dogs although they have mainly saluki blood perform very different to pures because of the lurcher ancestry, and to complicate things further fi sal grey' are different again, lol.

no mate it must of been a different year this one was four English men against four Scotsmen, England won it (I was not going to mention that) my bitch was up for dog of the day but steve robberts got it,there was no individual winner I knew every one in it accept one of the Scotsmen he had a red bitch, nice chap and a good bitch we drew our course my bitch looked to me like she was fadeing but rallied and killed the hare, my dogs were fed in the van the night before and the dog in the comp had both dinners, the next morning she looked like she was in pup, lol but none could lead her up or be

it was at Cawdor and sanky was in it, some other well known lads in it as well, and some of em gone now god rest em, they were going to do a return in England but don't think it happened,
-
I believe some of the Irish lads had them some of our early dogs had beddy in as well
-
just English against Scotland no name mate.
-
the best ones are the fast up and atem type saluki persentages don't come in to it there bred within the line i.e nothing else added saluki out cross only do that a few times over the years and they nearly all saluki but totally different.
-
no other dog can do that, fact, but you always get somebody saying my dog don't take 4 or 5 mins to catch a hare but the fact is they prob never run a good one, during the 1970's when dearhound crosses was all the rage my saluki lurchers was makin there jaws drop lol.
-
in answer to the double handed question, although it not my thing, I went in a double hander in Scotland before the ban, all the dogs were good single handed dogs, and sadly I don't think a hare got away.
-
there's a world of a difference between a lurcher hunting up and catching a hare or two and a good coursing dog killing good hares in winter, and there's a world of difference between a good hare killer, and a reel top class dog, and I know lots off hares are not given fair law but that the man not the dog, over the years I done some crazy slips, if it pulls it goes lol.
-
you can buy a line bred coursing pup for a couple of hundred, bring it up well enter it when it is physically and mentally ready and that may not be at the same time so be patient and you may get a world beater or pay a few grand and stick yer chest out, its your choice as for colly crosses killing hares I can assure any one unless its a freak it wont kill 3 winter hares coursed proper any where, I had a whippet sized bitch with saluki and beddlington in it that used to kill foxes single handed in winter and make a proper job of it, but I aren't daft enough to compare that to a proper fox dog
-
its just ego's coursers seam to crave a name, there are some very well known dog men in the coursing world who built reputations on bought in dogs, as for collie greyhounds pissing on coursing dogs at coursing lol must off been a reel useless one.
-
does that mean your reel then?
-
