I tell you what you boys keep talking about speed, I seen plenty of slow coursing dogs in my time out perform a quick en hands down.
-
nothing extravagant from me
-
experience would have told them that.
-
what did you have before that and for how long, and how good was it/they that make you an expert I tell you what you will get no help or advice, while you think you know it all.
-
they look well enough bred looking at what was put up, I have had some that could kill a hare by 7 or 8 months but my best ever never looked like killing one till it was 2 then never stoped, you cant judge one dog on what another didsome pups need time, experience will teach you this, and how to be patient, I know lads that got rid early and bought the same dog back for big money a year or two on.

here is my gang

i had a shoulder op so haven't been driving my truck, but i am now so had to scrag this twice, think it was the robbin hope its the ones in the yuka.
-
definite why would you not bring one back, to be fair though they probably did not rely suit this country at that time, so we let them be bred out in local stuff, they would of been some good lurchers about back then I bet.
-
i think I said something similar before, to many folk taking bitches that are not good enough to top studs, just because they have it, and its a way of getting a few quid, I have a cocker bitch in pup now, and the dog I have used I have watched working from being a pup, same with the last one, you cant beat seeing them over a period of time, I would still use a good well bred coursing dog with a good depth of breading though, as apposed to say an f1 sal grey, irrespective of how good the f1 was.
-
I wont name names, but your right benny I can think of one or two highly rated dogs that were well used studs, that produced nothing because the coursing blood was to thin,
-
I think our country was covered in trees wernt it, a sight hound would of been of less importance than a scent hunting type perhaps, although when and where we got sight hounds from is irrelevant surely.
-
your spot on, they all get wrongly labelled saluki greys, I have had and bred some very good saluki greys, but the modern coursing dog as I have said before is a saluki lurcher, when I got my first one as a young boy it was a saluki put over a beddy lurcher, and others did the same up and down, lads had decent lurchers, and just bred saluki in, then the best of these put to each other, until you get what we have, an out cross to saluki now and then is all you need, but I would be care full only to use a good one, for what they are bred for they wont be bettered as a type. but we must remember
-
some of the dogs from the early 1900's look like three quarter breds, good strong looking dogs, the only thing witch seems to be exaggerated is the amount of feather. of course the saluki was a vital ingredient in what we have today, what ever happens now wont change that.
-
if that whippet stud is a good working dog I would use that over a lurcher, rather than a greyhound all day long
-
none at all, I have just been researching a saluki that sired my first coursing lurcher 1969 I can trace the sire to that dog back to both Egypt 1895 and Syria 1897, and the saluki's used in the coursing dogs of today all go back the same way I can find the same dogs in all the saluki studs used through out the development of the modern coursing dogs, and all the lines have show bred stuff in them, but I believe the saluki is unique in this respect, every thing else seems to have been screwed up by the show fraternity.
-
sadly when you put something on here for all to see, you have to accept the rough with the smooth, not all comments are going to be complimentary, if you cant hack the odd daft statement, your taking yourself to seriously imo.
-
years ago dogs had to do a job, you would use the best dog available to you whatever that was, it would also have bean seen working, like you said no room for sentiment, the deerhounds years ago you speak of were more likely lurchers any way, like here when people talk about deerhound crosses being good dogs years ago, folk think of first crosses, when in reality the good ones would be deerhound lurchers, as apposed to longdogs.
-
it don't matter about that sort of thing once minds are made up.
