To Jump Or Not To Jump, That Is The ?
Leesy replied to Sirblessed's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I had it with mine whilst ferreting a week sunday gone. After a rabbit and jumped too late catching his rear leg. Bit of a yelp and carried on running. When he came back he had an L shaped tear which he had 10 stitches in! He's only just started putting weight on it, i'll be taking stiches out on sunday/monday. I hate barbed wire, imo it should be replaced with sheep wire fencing under government grant (not that it'll ever happen). I will still teach my dogs to jump though as i cant be asred lifting a dog over every wall, stile or fence we need to go over. -
I'm aware temperament and health are important areas of conern. Another area of concern is the size a dog will make for the work it'll be doing and terrain it'll be working on! Pretty straight forward question is it not?!

What size will the pups make pal?

Are there any col/whip or col/whip/grey pups available or planned litters for this year? I'm after a bitch that'll get to no more than 23"tts Cheers

I'm just entering my second season, and as stealthy1 said, the biggest hurdle is getting permission to ferret. I was lucky to meet a lad through thl that sorted me out with a couple of well bred jills, and took me out on his perm to show me the ropes. Since then i've only managed to gain one permission on a sports club, but i'm still knocking on doors trying for more. Last season I had a dog, 2 ferrets, a dozen shite nylon nets that someone palmed off on me, and no experience or real idea. This season I have the dog, 3 ferrets, quick set longnet, 2 dozen quality handmade poly nets, A SPADE,

Working Dog Vests: Does Anybody Use Them Or Know Where To Get Them?
Leesy replied to Leesy's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Not going to get a more 'suitable' dog, he'a not a pair of trousers! ha! He's very suitable for his work, he just gets cold standing around in the rain like most of us and our dogs. Not entirely sure how to take your comment but thanks anyway -

Prob too much too soon like you said. She's only a pup, my kelpie/whip did the same last season, he was a similar age then, he's only just started striking now and that was brought on by taking him ferreting with laddylurcher and his dogs. Has he had her ferreting yet? Might be better starting there first then try lamping again once shes snapping pursed rabbits and running bolters.

Has anybody ever seen/used, or know where to get a lightweight and waterproof vest for workng lurchers? I spotted one on a photo in a countrymans weekly article months ago but have no ide where to get them! My ferreting dog has a short flat coat and get cold pretty quickly when its wet and he's waiting around while i'm netting up for while waiting for bolts. The vest thingy i saw in the countrymans popped into my head the other day and ive trawled the internet but cant find one!

She's still young and obviously isnt mentally mature enough for the lamping game yet pal. Dont beat yourself up, and dont get stressed with her, it'll only make matters worse. Dogs learn best through positive associations not negative. I'd go right back to basics pal, do retrieving work in the garden, and use rewards. Positive reinforcement is the way forward. Tug games are a no no for lots of folks but its actually a very good starting block for getting a retrieve to hand. Have a mess about and tease her with the dummy. When she grabs it have a bit of a tug then ask her to leave it. Prais

Thats what i've been thinking! Might just do that.

First running dogs i encountered were whippets, my grandad was a well known whippet man from cumbria. He bred, worked and raced his dogs, and took me with him from the age of about 6. At aged 8 he gave me my very own little brindle bitch pup he'd bred himself. I thought my life was fulfilled My mam would only let me go racing every other sunday as she made me go to sunday school on the sundays between!! I would sit in church drawing pictures of whippets, and if ever the rev asked if anybody had anything they wished to pray for i would put my hand up and say "help sally run faster", althou

Yeh keep it up pal. Started breakng mine at 10 weeks on my pals sheep, wether grazing or running never bothered them. 16 months now and bothered at all until last week. One popped up out of long grass on tuther side of wire fence, made him jump so he ran at it and hit the fence!! Gave him a bollocking and left lead trailing on floor so i could stand on it if he fancied another go. Thankfully he didnt! Strange thing tho...he's always been bang on when out with me, but that time the Mrs is with me so dont know that could be connected to it as he's very protective over her and the kids! Its k

F***ERS!! Thats some length to go to. Def sounds well planned. Try what my pal did, and advertise dogs lost/stolen with genetic illness. It can put them off working and breeding from them. It worked for my mate.
