  1. Gunstar is probably best to check, but the prices you see there usually include a scope and things like that. Just a straight gun price isn't always doable.
  2. I remember your 320 yard shot that took out a buffalo, exited the skull, then took out a walrus too. Pretty good got a sub 12! haha
  3. Personally, if you're teaching him to shoot, it would make sense to get something he is comfortable with. So you should probably get him started on your guns, then see what kind of thing he prefers. Does he go shooting with you at the moment
  4. Here's a fun debate. I know an air rifle is capable of taking rabbits at around the 70yard range. Would I ever take one of those shots? HELL NO! For me to need to take one of those shots at that kind of distance, it wouldn't be testament to my amazing shooting ability. It would be testament to my inability to stalk up to the animal, get as close as possible, and take an easy clean shot. I hate the idea in risking injuring an animal and having it bleed out. As has been said above, respect for the quarry. Please note, I'm not banging on about how a long shot means you have no fieldcraft.
  5. Have you checked GumTree? You might find something in your area on there.
  6. Even though the company has a bad rep, I am suitably impressed with my one. Gamo. So far, not a single issue with my Gamo. Prefer to use a CO2 low ft/lb gun for indoors ratting; my choice is the Crosman 2250. Outside ratting, PCP makes sense and brings in good numbers; my choice BSA Ultra (picked one up yesterday after going out with a friend and using his). For general good fun (plinking and general 'sport' hunting) and fieldcraft practice (forced, because it's a springer) I like my little Gamo Varmint Stalker. I was doing fine without the PCP, but damn it's impressive to be able to s
  7. Crazy size for a first permission! I think I'd be moving in on that patch if it were mine haha.
  8. I look forward to seeing reviews on the gun and how it shoots. What made you go for the CZ?
  9. How odd. My wife just said she's seeing hundreds in a field where she walks the dogs, but nothing at my permissions. Looks like the desire for more permissions is going to increase again! I want some bunnies this year. At the rate things are going right now.....it won't be happening. I'm going to stop hunting rabbits and start hunting permissions with rabbits.
  10. I managed to get a quick chat with a farm owner on the way to work today and asked about if he needed any work for pest control done. He said there were no rabbits at all, but did ask me to leave my number and said to ask him again in a few months time.
  11. It sucks, as a farmer has said I can have his place as a permission if I can get him a rabbit for the pot from another permission, to prove I can shoot. I'm just struggling to find many, if any.
  12. That's a really good point mate.
  13. Has anyone else noticed a lack of rabbits around their area recently? I know it's mating season (as it always is for bunnies) but it seems abnormally quiet to me.
  14. You do realise .22 is only 1mm greater in diameter than a .177 so there's only a 0.5mm difference between touching the brain or not between the two calibre's Yeah I know this. I also recognise the energy transfer and the internal vacuum damage as well as the principle of leak-points in regard to taking down bigger game. I'm a bit of a nerd at heart haha. But I like to have that extra bit of certainty....maybe I'm just trying to justify it a little more and my reasoning and logic isn't quite as logical as most people's. I've put both .177 and .22 straight through a rats head. Neither o
  15. I go .22 all the way for ratting. The larger surface area makes head shots more likely to hit the brain....in my opinion.
  16. This is a very interesting conversation, but completely off topic. Back to the OT, is it possible to get a barrel threaded to accept a moderator. Please note, I am not interested in the choke as I shoot my groupings are not that of a 5p piece, they are more like a...£5 note....or a book of the history of the £5 note, written on A1 size sheets of paper. Which explains my requirement for a moderator. So, is it possible to get a barrel threaded?
  17. I'm looking at getting a cute little .22lr, however, from what I can tell, it's an unthreaded barrel, and I'm looking at adding a moderator. How simple is it to get a barrel threaded so that it can accept a moderator? Any idea of costing would also be appreciated.
  18. If you're looking for a real kick, ratting! If you're out going for rabbits or something like that, you'll get to around 5 or 6 and that'll be your day over. With ratting, you'd expect to get to double figures! Much more satisfying, busier, and active. However, it's not too easy if you don't have some kind of night gear. One of the best ways I was taught to hunt and stalk...get a camera. A photographer friend taught me about stalking and the alike. It's a great way to practice taking good 'shots' without worrying about carrying a gun in a public area. A camera is fine to carry around.
  19. I just got a lovely new scope, thanks JJM. It's going on my .22lr, when I get it. However, I know it's massively overkill. It would be sufficient for most .223's at least. I'd be happy with it on a .223 or even a .243. If you're just popping bunnies, you really won't need anything more than 8x mag. I know a lot of guys that rock up with fixed 4x and others that like the accuracy of a 6x or 8x. The best thing you can do, get as many scopes that you already have, try them out. See what kinds of ranges you're aiming for (like what I did there? I'm the pun-master haha)and then adjust accor
  20. I've heard of people getting so excited that they....oh wait..... Good shot there.
  21. ALL softshell will leak at the seams. I think there may be one exception and that is TAD, but you're looking like £300ish a jacket. Personally, I love my softshell gear. It's warm, cozy, and I have no complaints with it. Does it absorb water? Yes, a little. I have treated it with tent waterproofing stuff, and I'm pleased with the results. As for Mr Pyke...I'm a fan. Never had a bad experience, but there's always time. I have, do, and at the moment still will, recommend their gear.
  22. Totally forgot to mention the places of impact issue. Certain types of plate rely on having other 'material' of the plate around it to absorb the energy of the impact. If a round catches in the corner of certain types of plate, there may not be enough material there, and the bullet will get through. This is one of the reasons why so much emphasis is made of wearing shock abosrber pads and the alike, behind your plates, to help disperse the energy over a larger area...but also to assist the 'extra material' factor that I just described.
