Is Quail Hunting With Pointers Common In The Uk?
ALECTORIS replied to ALECTORIS's topic in Gundogs & Retrievers
In Spain you can shoot them from mid october until late january. They are not a common quarry to go after but I know a couple of guys who hunt them with pointers. In my opinion the most difficult shot you can get at a gamebird along with common turtle doves, the ones that migrate from Africa in the summer but definitely a more thrilling hunt when done with pointers. Nice pictures! -

I'd say a couple of onions, garlic and a nice dash of olive oil!!! -
Veery nice shot and veeery accurate!!! I think the 17Hmr is good enough for foxes if the shot is accurate, but under windy conditions I've seen shots placed towards one side at that distances with it. I personally hunt foxes with a .222 and 12/70 Brno billing and I find it the perfect fox killer. Whenever I had failed to place the shot on target it has been my fault. I'd taken down quite a few before with 22lr, but since I tried the .222, I forgot about them. I even use it for roe deer (never at long distances) and with 50grs bullets and clear shots it is very effective. Cheers.

Thank you. I didn't know they were protected in the UK. When I said bobwhites and japanese I meant released ones. That is very common to do in Spain in order to train the dogs before the summer season, but I prefer to start the new dogs with wild common quails (Coturnix coturnix) which are quite abundant in certain areas, than with released japanese ones (Coturnix japonica) whose flight is very poor and often allows the dog to catch it after a couple of flights ruining the pointing instinct. Thank you again for your answers, they've been very helpful. Oh, and, if you ever have -
Hi everyone. We're in the middle of the summer season here in Northern Spain, with quail shooting as the most important hunt around. It is in my opinion, along with woodcock hunting, the most spectacular hunt to do with pointing dogs, and I'm curious if you hunt them up in the UK. I've read about japanese quail hunting (mostly falconry) or bobwhite quail hunting, but I haven't read anything about shooting common quail. Do you hunt them? If so, how long does the season last? Cheers.

I run a small hunting and birdwatching business so I usually get paid for stuff like this, but since money is not the most important thing in life, everything is possible!! Problem is I have little time to travel, so swapping wouldn't be that easy. Contact me if you are coming to Northern Spain if you want. I'll be glad to show you my hunting places or help you find something cool to do outdoors. Cheers!

Hunting in Spain can be expensive, cheap or fair priced. It realy is a matter of good outfitter searching, accomodation requirements, kind of hunt you want (trophy or not, traditional, luxurious,...). I guess it's the same in every country with great hunting tradition. If it helps, it is also expensive for a Spaniard to go stalking a buck deer or a bull Spanish Ibex (of course if they are trophies the prices go extremely high), but that is a problem with a veeeery long story behind, and not only outfitters are to blame. Land owners, town halls (yes, in Spain there are many villages who sell t

Thanks for the compliments, but they obviously should go to my friend. He has a few of these bucks hanging on the walls, and I can tell you that whenever he is showing them to somebody, you can feel he is not showing off, he really is proud of the effort he has put into it. Have a nice summer!

Hi everyone. Last week a good friend of mine and one of the hunters I respect the most managed to hunt the roe in the picture. The story is long, so in order to avoid boring you all, I'll be as concise as I can. The hunting ground is a remote area where few hunters go. It is very well guarded against poachers, and stalkers are allowed to search for their perfect roe with one permit as many days as they want; this meaning that they are very carefully chosen hunters who only use one permit for one roe. My friend spends many hours searching for the best animals, the ones who are o

Don't take it too hard pal, I'm only speaking from the outside looking in as a member. It's down to the Mods and Forum owner/s to consider their efforts for the site. Admittedly, if there was more customisation for the flags and any other features for members, there would be more pride in your profile and role/actions on the forum... So, yes, it would have a positive reaction but like I said. If they see you as a contributor to the forum, I'm sure they'll be pleased and happy to help you and other members out. Don't worry about how often or not you get on here, after all it's a forum for -
Thanks for the welcome. I'll try and be more active, but my job duties leave me little spare time and internet isn't my first choice! If anyone has any question about hunting, birdwatching or fishing in Spain, I'll be glad to help (if I know the answer!). Have a nice summer holiday!!

Great info! Just one aclaration to expand it: yes, the alanos (villanos and toro dogs) differ a bit from the old type, but mostly are the same breed, which is a very old one. There are many old paintings where you can find this type of breeds in hunting packs here in Spain. It's just some extra stuff because as I said in the beginning the info provided by Lusitano is excellent.

Hi everyone. Let's see if I can help a bit. Here in Spain, alanos and dogos are often used for boar and deer hunting mostly together with podencos, bloodhounds and crosbreeds between them, specially podencos with alanos or dogos. From my experience with them, I must say I prefer the alanos, although I've seen very brave dogos working, but the dog owners I know tend to prefer alanos for they are more equilibrate and are less agressive with the rest of the pack dogs but still very brave with the quarry. In villages and little towns around here is very common to have "communal" hu

Hi White. I'm afraid you're absolutely right about how much I participate in this forum. Sorry if my request seemed inappropriate considering my few posts; nothing further from my intentions. I only thought members could find it more helpful if they knew where I was participating from in order to help with any info they wanted about field sports in my country, which I'll be glad to share, by the way. I'll try and be more active, but I'm not much of a pc man. Alectoris -

Poachers are thieves. When you are in a private hunting ground and you don't have the right to, you are a thief. If you are carrying a gun or net or "waking" a dog where you are not allowed to, you are thinkig of using it, you are thinking of stealing. I run a private hunting ground in Spain and it costs me a lot of time and money to do it properly, so whenever I come across someone who is not allowed to be there, I simply call the authorities and I tell you that they take good care of the situation. No one likes to be robbed and people who do this they are trying to steal my property.

Hi everyone. I've recently signed in this great site and, when the time came to create my profile, I was able to find many countries to choose but not mine! If there is a chance, I would like Spain to be another option. Te main reason is that this is my country of course, plus hunting, fishing and other outdoor activities are widely spreaded across it and very traditional. I also think that it might be useful to other site users to quickly identify where I hunt for they might be interested in information about species, hunting methods, seasons or any other information regarding country l

Hi again. Here's a pic of sweet Mamba posing with an old red legged partridge male. As I wrote in my previous post, she acts like a springer when she detects the presence of partridges, starting to wiggle her tail very quickly and lifting the head instead of the usual "nose to the ground" typical terrier attitude. As I said before, I'm not very good at pc working, so I really don't know how the pic is gping to look like. Hope you like it. Thanks for reading.

Hello everyone. I'm new in this forum and I wanted to introduce myself to all the users. I live in Northern Spain, in beauiful Zaragoza. I've been hunting for more than twenty years, and there isn't a single day when I get back home without having learned something new about this sport! I like almost every type of hunt, but the one I like the most is red legged partridge hunting with a dog (sorry, I don't like partridge driven hunts!). I find it one of the most difficult hunts, specially if the partridges are wild and the terrain is rocky. Referring to big game, stalking roe deer and S

Hi everyone. I have a seven year old Kerry Blue bitch which is my hunting companion. I live in Northern Spain, and the usual quarry I hunt with her are rabbits, woodcocks and mostly red legged partridges. Yes, I know it is not the perfect breed for this purpose, but this is the hunt she likes the most. She gets in a "springer" mode, returning to the terrier mode when retrieving. I must say that I never take her to hunt big game, in fact, whenever she flushes wild boar or roe deer, I never shoot because I don't want her for this purpose, but I think this will probably be the best one.
