They're looking really well Ken. See yours is getting stuck in

I should think very slightly shorter than with the feathers still on.

You can really see the saluki influence. Good luck with him...

Looks nice

Never heard of that before. As said above, I'm guessing the jill was inexperienced? Hope the remaining 5 come good....

Glad to see young Cryuff's finally worked out how to stand the right way up

Can't beat that combination of busher and lurcher - once you've got it sorted you won't believe the fun you'll get from it.... But as Gaz has said, I definitely wouldn't get two pups together - in my book that's a recipe for frustration at best, disaster at worst. I'd want an absolute minimum of 12 months between pups, and probably nearer 18 tbh. But I disagree with the idea of getting a terrier first. If you do that, right from the word go when you have the 2 of them out together, the lurcher pup will be seeing rabbits dashing from one piece of cover to the next, fleeing down the middle of he

I've worked snipped hobs in the past but have decided that they're too valuable to risk anything bad happening out working. I know the chances are slim, but it's still a possibility nevertheless. At least this way there's never any possibility of me regretting getting him snipped 'cos I want to carry on his bloodline. I already have a very good entire hob if I want to breed...

Glad you've been able to come to a decision. She's a cracking little thing - best of luck with her. Look forward to the odd progress report over the coming months....and the same with any of the rest of the litter that have gone to people off here. Always good to be able to see how pups turn out....

£250 my arse . He was a tenner...

Brings back some memories....thanks for sharing

Just picked up this little fella. He's destined for many - I hope - summers of sex; as soon as he's old enough I'll get him snipped. The only work he'll ever do is seeing to the ladies...

Don't know if you pay any attention to tail length and carriage, but it looked to me as if the merle has a much more 'sighthoundy' tail than the red.

Size isn't everything and I certainly wouldn't be basing my decision on that. What's going on between the ears is every bit as important - if not more so - as physical attributes. I've seen dogs that by rights shouldn't have caught certain items of quarry that did manage to catch them purely through sheer grit, determination and an absolute refusal to give up. And by the same token you could have a fantastically bred dog with perfect conformation that absolutely looks the part, but if it doesn't have what it takes mentally it would be as much practical use as a chocolate fireguard. If it was m

Sounds to me like you've just about made up your mind. I wouldn't worry about the fact the merle's small - it's hardly as if she's a runty little thing. You're just comparing the size difference between biggest and largest. And it's very unlikely by the time she's full grown she'll only be whippet sized...

Breeding - The Importance Of The Female Line
krawnden replied to krawnden's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I heard an interview on Radio Four last week about Golden Horn, the 2015 Derby winner, who's been retired to stud. So far he's covered 147 mares at £60k a pop, 93% (from memory, I think) of which have conceived. I couldn't help wondering at the time I was listening, how many of those mares were top class and how many were 'also rans' whose owners were hoping for great things by using a top stallion.... -
I just idly clicked on the link in the ad that's currently running in the Working Dogs classified section for ftc springer spaniel pups and had a quick look at that site. Read this interesting article about the importance of the female when breeding http://www.edgegrovegundogs.co.uk/the_girls.html

I had a greyhound bitch that lived in. Like Gaz said above about his brindle bitch , she was adept at stealing food without making it look like she had. I remember one time the missus had prepared a whole load of peppers for roasting. Those large, red long ones about the size of your hand. Each one was halved lengthways then the insides were stuffed with some sort of cheesy mix. She'd got a whole load of these on a roasting tray about to go in the oven when the phone rang. She nipped next door to answer it, passing the greyhound who'd been lying on her bed watching. The missus came back though

As others have said - very smart terrier

I reckon it's got a lot to do with the terrier blood used? And the whippet I suppose. I've seen plenty of both with a stubborn side and won't do a thing they are told. This terrier I've got here is really biddable and obedient, never goes too far. That type of terrier crossed with a decent working whippet could make handy types I reckon. You planning on putting a whip over your bitch then Gaz?
