  1. No way of knowing how he'll be afterwards I wouldn't have thought - just have to take a punt and hope for the best....
  2. If you're tempted to get the op done I'd ring round a few other vets for a quote - £140 for castration sounds a bit steep to me.
  3. I'm in same boat - neither of my parents had the slightest interest in dogs (neither does my only sibling) but my paternal grandmother was dog mad and her husband (who died when I was very young) was apparently mad keen on coursing.
  4. I spent a year there in the late 80's so any info I have could be well and truly outdated, but in the South I do remember some great fishing on rivers Waikaia, Greenstone, Motueka and Glenorchy and lakes Te Anau, Wanaka, Wakatipi and Manapouri. Loads more that I can't remember, I'm afraid. Also had a blast pig hunting - biggest adrenalin rush ever when the holders are doing their job and you're going in with a knife. Just exercise a little caution - I was young and foolish at the time and had a couple of potentially very dangerous encounters that could have easily gone wrong My best advic
  5. Great stuff Minkenry - Onsa's coming on superbly considering you'd only had her 3 weeks in that vid. Keep up the good work - you're going to end up with a first rate hunting companion that'll not only up your find and catch rate, but will DRAMATICALLY increase the enjoyment and satisfaction you get from your trips
  6. Mine's not lacking in stamina - she'll go all day if given the chance.
  7. Nice looking bitch, Moorside
  8. He's the sire of mine. Not seen him ferreting but have seen him bushing - fast through cover. I know Skycat rates him very highly as a ferreting dog.
  9. is she quick enough to pick up a bolter across a field or just the odd one out of cover mate She'd never get a bolter that's clear of cover and running across an open field, but she catches loads in cover and plenty at/near the mouth of the hole while ferreting. She's just turned 2 and has accounted for well over 100.
  10. She's 'kind of' a whirrier - dam 100% terrier, sire first cross border terrier x whippet, which makes her 3/4 terrier, 1/4 whippet. If you go ahead with your plan and the pups turn out anything like mine you'll be pleased you did. She's got a great nose and is incredibly focussed when working. Very persistent - if there's a rabbit about she'll find it (flushes other stuff too, but rabbits are my main quarry).
  11. I've not used him but made a note of the details - Martin 07880 319337. 10kg box £2.50 Cardiff area Let me know if you're planning to get some and we could maybe make up a joint order?
  12. I know soneone who's got one and I certainly wouldn't want one - as others have said, the ferts get horribly sweaty.
  13. It's always good to know you can trust your vet. Over the years I've used loads of different ones and I still find it incredible that so many of them are no good for working dogs & ferrets.
  14. That's one hell of a bag - how many dogs?
  15. I know someone who does good drawings from photos but I don't know if she'd be interested - I can ask if you want?
  16. I've never owned a plummer or seen one work so can't comment from personal experience, but they're bound to be exactly the same as all other breeds and types of dog, insofar as some will be better than others. If you're tarring the breed as a whole with the same brush based on one individual you've owned, yours is bound to be a very biased view. Who said I have only seen one? the ones I've seen looked good as a pack but on there own not much cop, I've seen better russels that run on there own that would put them to shame, these plummers I've seen are supposed to be the cream of the crop best

  18. I think it's swings and roundabouts, though personally now that I've (finally) reached the point of working a busher and lurcher together I like one on the inside and the other on the outside. But a lurcher that bushes its own quarry is a hell of a useful dog - a mate of mine used to have a first cross beddy/grey that was superb at it and put absolutely loads of game away. He could only keep one dog at a time so for him it was essential the dog was good at finding on its own.
  19. If they're not in the warren they've run towards they've obviously gone elsewhere. Try putting longnets/stopnets across any gaps, gates etc further back before you go anywhere near the lawn. And if you don't have one, see if you can get onto the ground with someone who's got a good busher - there's a good chance there'll be some lying up in flower borders/patches of cover etc and a good busher will find them...
  20. Sounds to me like you're off to a good start in terms of working dogs Onwards and upwards...
  21. Anybody know what different things can cause a lump on a ferret? One of my jills has just developed a lump the size of a big pea just over her ribcage - as soon as I picked her up this evening I could feel it. Nothing really visible and she seems in fine fettle in all other respects. I'll keep an eye on it for a day or two and if no better get her to the vet, but I was just wondering what people's thoughts on possible causes are?
