Silken Windhound (Borzoi Whippet Line Bred)
krawnden replied to flynndog's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I'd never heard of them before this thread so googled it. Interesting read at http://www.silkenwindhound.com/history.html by the person who created the breed. She makes it perfectly clear that what she was trying to create was an aesthetically pleasing medium sized long haired sighthound. It had to have a long coat and look pretty. There's absolutely no mention whatsoever of prey drive or hunting ability. Being sighthounds I'm sure they'd chase stuff with a bit of encouragement and some of them might be quite useful at it. But if I wanted a pup primarily for work this isn't something I'd touch -
How's the brindle bred Joe?

Nice idea - any chance you could put up a photo?

I wouldn't do it on busy roads but where I live I've got a circuit I do that's a mix of relatively quiet village roads and much quieter country roads. Plus I like to be all done and dusted by 7.30am at the latest, so I get most of it done when there's not much traffic about.

This might be obvious but there's no harm in saying it anyhow. If you do roadwork on a bike, now the clocks have changed you'll quite possibly be doing it in the dark or the half-light. In which case make sure you're all lit up like a Christmas tree. I used to just have a front and back light on the bike but 9 or 10 years ago I got knocked off the bike by a car that was coming out of a side road as I went past - the driver just didn't see me. Luckily he was going slowly so although I had bruises and cuts it was no worse than that (and fortunately the dog wasn't hit). But it sure as hel

#1 Vulva swelling up #2 Good way to bring em out of season if you don't want kits, but with some jills you'll have to do it more than once each summer (and if you keep jills together there's a good chance they'll spend a lot of time trying to drag their cage mates back into the sleeping quarters, so be prepared for a noisy summer as it won't happen without protest on the other jills' part) #3 I like to do it as early in the breeding season as possible; that way the kits will be well grown by autumn and you can start working them that much earlier than a late-born litter

Tiercel, if you can't find anyone to do it let me know and I can put you in touch with someone local to me. She's a Master Saddler and does all sorts of leatherwork. She's repairing the missus' handbag at the moment where my puppy chewed through one of the leather straps.

Two or three years ago quite a few people were selling them on eBay. I was going to buy one but never got around to it. But like you say, none on there now.

Never seen one myself but remember reading "Rebecca The Lurcher" many moons ago and liking the sound of the cross (from what I remember she was first cross greyhound/foxhound). The book's probably out of print now but you'd probably still be able to pick up a second hand copy from somewhere. Might give you some interesting background reading.

Waterproofs.... Seriously ? Sealand/barber/harkila/deerhunter ?
krawnden replied to a topic in Hunting Boots & Clothing
But have you yet had a chance to put it through its paces? Been out all day in a downpour etc? On more than one occasion I've been caught out by all the sales talk only to discover a few months down the road that it's not all it's cracked up to be. -
As been said, much safer for ferret if you slip and fall. But having said that, I used a bag for years without a problem when I first got into ferreting, and liked it a lot. Light, quiet and discreet. Came unstuck one day as I was driving home and suddenly noticed the 2 jills wandering around in the car. The little buggers had scratched away at a corner of the bag and made a little hole. Had absolutely nothing else to put them in so that made for a rather hairy drive home as on more than one occasion they managed to get under the pedals

Helluva bag there - far bigger than anything I've ever done in a night. You must have a lot of rabbits on your ground - be thankful for that. In my part of the world there simply aren't the numbers.

Yes. I long since gave up plucking pheasants so now all I do is rip open the skin on the breast, peel back both sides then cut out the breasts. They're for me and everything else goes into the ferret cage. I used to keep back the legs as well, but to be honest there's not that much meat on them so these days the ferrets get them as well.

Couple Of Action Shots (Northern Ireland)
krawnden replied to the trunk's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Agree with others - great shots. Looks like he grabbed the tail so a second later got a face full of teeth - how'd he react to that? -
D'you know if there are any left in the litter? I have a mate who lost his first cross beddy/grey last year and has been looking for a similar replacement but ideally was wanting something with a touch more speed so these would be ideal for him. PM me if you like.

Benny, if you're new to it I suggest you watch these 3 videos of Dave Sleight's - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t46VIUb_Au8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rim6LLGE2qo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIGguwR-OII Can't remember which one (I think it's the last one though), but on one of them he shows you exactly what to do to train the dog for the lamp. But if you watch all 3 you'll probably pick up some other useful tips as well. Good luck with your dog, and enjoy her. You should have some real fun together in the years ahead...

Robs, I know they claim it's a 400m beam but what is it really? I ask as they claim the Light Fantastic, which I had, has a 500m beam. But that's crap. Maybe someone standing 500m away looking at the guy holding the lamp would just about be able to make out a pinprick of light, but that doesn't make it a 500m beam IMO. I found that anything much past - 100 yards and I could barely make out what was going on. What would you say is the furthest distance you could easily follow a running rabbit with your plr400?
-
The idea of not carrying a battery around is very appealing, especially if your back's knackered like mine is. For that reason I bought a clulite at the start of the year (can't remember which one but think it was called The Light Fantastic or something similar) but I sent it back as the beam wasn't much good out beyond about - 100 yards.
-
I've never fed cooked meat to mine, and to be honest wouldn't dream of it. Like northern lad says, some rabbits bolt, some don't, regardless of what you feed the ferts.

Warm Clothing For Winter Shore Fishing

And comfortable to sit on while you wait for a bite -
Great start, well done. I sympathise with the 'young dog and young ferrets' situation as that's the same boat I'm in at the moment, but you've just got to stick at it - the more exposure to rabbits they all get, the quicker it'll all come together.
