Joe - unfortunately myxi's struck round my way and my little busher's caught 8 myxied ones this week. That was one of 2 she had this afternoon. She dived through the hedge and I heard squealing. Looking through the hedge I could just make her out on the other side of it and when I called her I saw her hesitate a moment then run downhill. She knew there was a gap about 30 yards downhill and had obviously decided it would be easier that way than trying to bring it through a load of thick bramble. Gutted to be finding so many myxied ones - especially right at the start of the breeding season - bu

I think this hits the nail on the head. I know a couple of people who've been bitten by charlie and - as blackmagpie said earlier - say it's unbelievably painful. Your average dog is not going to deliberately set itself up to receive repeated doses of intense throbbing pain...

This is my first busher fairy, so I'm completely new to it and have nothing to compare her with from personal experience. But I can tell you she's very quick - I've seen her run several rabbits across open ground and although she's not fast enough to overhaul them, she pretty much keeps pace with them. In other words if she pushes one out of cover and comes out of the hedge 10 yards behind it, she stays 10 yards behind it all the time. I think her speed means she's quick enough to put a hedgerow-running rabbit under sufficient pressure that it'll leave the safety of the hedge where, hopefully,

Jigsaw are you talking about getting a pup from England, Scotland or Wales? Or do you mean bring in from somewhere like mainland Europe, America etc?

Just watched that video again and realised me and my mate who wanted his ashes scattered there are in it.

The Withins is still there, as it was, for now....Maybe Lucas and Barney can hobble out of a shy when his time comes... I'll tell him about your kind offer

A mate of mine never missed the Waterloo in about 25 years. He used to say that when he died he wanted to have his ashes scattered on the Withins immediately before the finalists went into slips so they'd run up over him. Don't think he's gonna get his wish somehow...

Great reading other people's memories; somehow brings it all back to life again. Happy times, tinged with sadness and a burning sense of injustice.

Thanks for the link, strayshot - really enjoyed reading that article

Funny you should start this thread WM - for the first time since it all finished I was within spitting distance of Altcar just a few weeks ago when I took my daughter for an interview at Edgehill University. While I was waiting for her I contemplated going for a wander down to the Withins and Lydiate, but in the end just pootled about in Ormskirk.

Yeah, I forgot about the geese Neil - there'd be thousands and thousands of them. And often they'd be moving all through the day.

Thanks for sharing that vid darbo. Some great footage there, though not just of the Waterloo. Though that was a really special meeting there were plenty of other good ones as well. I used to love the South of England and Newmarket Champion Puppy Stakes, and had some great times at Swaffham, Huntingdon, East of England etc...

Miss it terribly. Like maxhardcore says, too many memories to list. But here's a few - Clarissa D-W stomping round in her plus twos with a big smile on her face and happy to chat with anyone One year I thought I was all organised 'cos I took a little foldup chair - my mates all pissed themselves laughing when I tried to use it on the bank as the legs just sank right into the mud and the chair got stuck there All the banter and craic on the bank. One year some nutter stripped off and went for a 'swim' in a big muddy puddle on the WIthins just in front of the bank Another time a

A mate of mine had a first cross bed x grey that was a superb ratter. Might have some old pics kicking around - I'll have a look later...

Heard a few people say they had poodle/grey and pretty game dogs krawnden? Rare x though Mine was shaping up to be a great allrounder, but unfortunately got killed on the road aged 21 months, so in all fairness I couldn't say he'd been thoroughly tested. But he was fast, agile, had good coat and feet and used his nose well. Was great with ferrets and sensible around the nets, had taken daytime hare, muntjac and roe and had retrieved his first goose from the water (I do a bit of wildfowling). It's also a distinct possibility that he caught the very last legal hare in this country - or at the

Sounds good...

Even if the lurcher's on the outside of the cover it frequently doesn't go to plan, at least not with mine anyhow. Often the rabbit bolts the other side of the hedge/bramble clump from where the lurcher is and he either physically can't reach it, or by the time he's got where he should have been it's too late. Plus, of course, there are quite a few times when he never even sees it. But when it all comes together it's poetry in motion
