  1. A terrier x whippet is never going to have the speed to run a rabbit down in the open on a regular basis. But - provided it's not too big - it should have the speed to run one down in cover. As to whether or not it's too big to be useful, I think that'll depend on the size of the parents. You get both big and small whippets just like some terriers are much bigger than others. I guess I'm biased, but having got one I certainly wouldn't want to be without one. Mine's about 15" tts and she flies through all but the thickest cover with no bother at all. And for the sort of ferreting I do, whic
  2. Sire's first cross border x whippet, dam's mixed ancestry terrier (predominantly russell but with a bit of patterdale and lakeland a few generations back)

  4. Doubt she'll be pregnant if she's not properly in season yet. You'll know when she is - vulva swells up to almost the diameter of a 1p piece. Lots of people put pregnant jills in a separate cage, but of the 4 litters I've bred I've only done it once. The other 3 times all the kits were reared no bother - the other jills helped play nursemaid. (Mind you, these were always in big cages with plenty of room.)
  5. Nice pup Plucky - hope she does well for you. Like you, I always have my pups out and about from day one in places where Joe Public doesn't walk. Never been a problem in the past. Good to see you getting her out ferreting early too. They're like sponges at that age, soaking everything in. The more you can expose them to in the first few months, the better.
  6. I don't even know what spures or nodes are! Guess I'd best not give up the day job...
  7. the Brock dog would mark heavily.would dig and howl like a full hound when sumthing was to ground .never encouraged him to push on.he was a fairly big dog for most spots anyway.the bitch that willow sent up .was pritty much the same.sadly both gone now. What happened to the bitch from wi11ow?
  8. Nice find, but looks a difficult spot to do. A smoker wouldn't be any good in the log pile and I think ferreting would only work with a load of ferrets. Your best bet might just be to go at it with a spade where the dogs are marking holes. I've never come across even one white one, never mind 3 together. Let us know how you get on with it...
  9. Well done fella - been waiting to see the terrier in action. She's certainly keen More vids please!
  10. Maybe. There has to be some explanation. I guess either the rabbits are stronger or maybe there are stronger and weaker strains of myxi? And perhaps conditions at the time the virus strikes play a part too - if food's scarce at the time the rabbits will probably succumb more easily. I'd be interested to know if anybody can shed more light on the subject...
  11. Good idea. I've got some unused drainpipe so I might knock one up for mine...
  12. Like the bottom two - very nice
  13. That's good. Weird though how in some places it wipes them out but in others isn't too bad a problem.
  14. It's always a mixed blessing - fantastic for boosting the self-confidence of youngsters, but at the same time hideous to see. And if you get it really bad it can absolutely decimate the population. A mate of mine had it bad on one of his perms 3 years ago and it virtually wiped them out completely. Even now there's almost no rabbits on there.
  15. Love that headshot at the top Chicken_man
  16. Fingers crossed all goes well for you. Tilly's is a great worker so hopefully the pups will turn out the same...
  17. i understood it as, as soon as they started running cunning, holding back for other dog to turn the hare etc that they wasn't courses no more? Yes - because by doing that they weren't scoring points, therefore very unlikely to win a course.
  18. Thanks fellas. I must admit although I do have moments when I wonder what on earth I was thinking when I built it, when I watch them playing around with so much space I don't regret it. I'll try and get a vid up over the w/e of them charging the full 90ft at feeding time - it's quite entertaining.
  19. Lovely looking dog mate. How old? Has it done much yet?
