  1. Anybody who used to be involved with the deerhound coursing club will probably remember Bernard Hendy. (Had grey hair and a short beard if you're trying to put a face to the name). I just heard that he's died in Zambia, while on a river cruise holiday with his wife Irene. He was only 68. He was a lovely man who always had a twinkle in his eye. Very sad.
  2. It's great to get the kids out. My eldest daughter used to love coming beagling, fishing and ferreting when she was younger. And my youngest girl loves coming mooching and lamping. Like yours, she gives a little cheer whenever the dogs catch!
  3. Lovely looking pups. I wish you all the best with them - I hope we'll get the odd progress report in the future...
  4. Shame about yours Tomo - sounds like it could have been handy. Mustelid - I think fashion and heresay/word of mouth/rumour/publicity has a lot to do with it. Dogs go in and out of fashion. In the 1980's pit bulls and rottweilers were all the rage and you saw them everywhere. Fifteen years ago it was incredibly rare to find a working cocker on a shoot, now they're everywhere. Turn the clock back even further and fox terriers were very common - now they're almost as rare as hen's teeth. Same goes for curly coated retrievers. I first got into running dogs around 35 years ago, and back the
  5. You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it.
  6. Yes I tend to refer to her more often than not as a terrier, I suppose because she looks the part. Mind you, you can certainly see the whippet influence when she gets behind a rabbit - for something so small it's amazing how quickly she covers the ground. Glad to hear Grizz is doing well too. Still waiting to see some pictures though - got any you can put up?
  7. You're right tiercel - immensely satisfying And yes, I reckon I'd have been happy to pay for a day like that!
  8. I wanted to breed some 3/4's from my bitch this year, she came in season a few weeks ago but was never interested in standing for the dog, when she should have been bang ready she went out? She might come back in i think, her body clocks been a bit haywire the last couple of years, a litter would probably sort her out a bit imo? If i did breed or get the chance of a 3/4 i would still pick a pup with more spaniel influence, if any came out that way? I don't want or need really fast dogs for what i do, water any base blood down to much or breed to far away from the base and you'd lose the
  9. All rabbits bolted. Couldn't possibly have dismantled piles - they were huge. Each one would keep me in firewood for two or three winters! See the rest of the write up. The bit where I describe Willow taking a while to get into the hedge was just like that one we found when she kept trying to shift it but the hedge was so thick it took her a while
  10. By the time I was done with the log piles it was lunch time. After lunch I started on the field. I quickly discovered it was going to be nigh on impossible to ferret it on my own. At one end was an impenetrable bramble hedge about 20ft thick. I later discovered it used to be a farm track but has fallen into disuse and is now totally overgrown. This ran for about 500 - 600 yards and clearly held plenty of rabbits - the terrier dived straight into it and I could see occasional glimpses of rabbits being pushed about by her, but there was no way they were ever going to come out into the open.
  11. Wasn't sure where to put this really, as it's a mix of ferreting and bushing, but plumped for here as the bushing was so rewarding. Yesterday I was doing a paid rabbiting job in a 4 acre garden and adjoining field. The garden had masses of thickly planted borders, intricate box parterres etc, all of which took ages to methodically work through with the dogs at the start of the day to make sure any outlying rabbits were accounted for. Having worked the dogs through the whole garden I found the only spot that rabbits were living was in each of 5 large decorative circular log piles approx 12
  12. I took a bitch of mine from Gloucestershire to Glasgow for a lining and a couple of years ago was on the point of taking one to Germany to a stud dog (though for various reasons it never happened in the end). And nearly all the pups I've had have been 3 - 4 hours away. Distance has always been irrelevant for me - all I'm interested in is sourcing the right breeding.
  13. I've never seen a gundog based lurcher of any sort but have always liked the idea in principle, though I suspect a first cross would be lacking in speed. I'd love to see a 3/4 bred.
  14. anybody heard of this x before ? as said these were old type lurcherx back then . I've never heard of the cross, but can't see why it wouldn't perform as you say. Shame the working ones have gone the way of the dodo. I always thought they were handsome dogs.
  15. She sounds very much like my bitch Wuyang, mines more of a fast busher than a lurcher at 16" tts, but that's what i wanted, she does catch a bit, but that's not really her job.........Hard to fault mine for what i want really, never stops hunting, works cover pretty well, obedient and very easy bitch to get along with, good round the house and grandkids, after having her my next proper runner will be spaniel based. Most of the runners iv'e had, if not all, had collie from half, to just a dash, i don't see why you couldn't get a similar dog using spaniel blood? And i know this probably wont
  16. I hate the noise of the mk3, and like has been said they're not accurate on the depth reading. But I like the fact that the search setting picks up from much further away than the mk1 (well, the old 8' mk1 anyhow, which is the one I had). When doing thickish hedgerows on my own it allows me to know roughly where the ferret is without necessarily having to get through the hedge.
  17. If she's out of a pure deerhound by a first cross bull grey she's half, not three-quarter, deerhound. And if you want her for rabbits I'd say that's to your advantage. But don't get too hung up on the exact percentages. The important thing is that being only half deerhound she should mature earlier than a purebred. She looks quite small in the pictures, but it could just be the angles - how tall is she to the shoulder?
  18. First off, that's a stunning looking pup you've got there, and I can understand why you're so pleased with it. But it's not a deerhound. It's a lurcher with a certain percentage of deerhound blood in its makeup. That makes a big difference. Pure deerhounds are slow to mature and expecting one to start catching even 'easy' rabbits at 12 months is optimistic. But if yours is only, say, quarter deerhound, that probably won't be an issue. In order to be able to answer your question about what's reasonable to expect of her at a certain age I'd want to know how she's bred.
  19. That's one hell of a dig. Well done for getting him out. Great pics and write up
  20. Zeus - what d'you mean by "chip" your jills? Not an expression I've come across before.
  21. I'm after half a dozen poke nets. Can anybody recommend someone I can get them from? Thanks.
