Thanks for all your advice. I've been having a look at the John Norris website, and I'm tempted by the Seeland Keeper's or Woodcock jackets. Has anyone got these, and how do you rate them? Incidentally, I used my Barbour Border jacket last Saturday (my first days' beating of the season), and it poured down! The jacket, although recently re-proofed, became stiff as a board, and it isn't all that waterproof...hence my quest for a more suitable garment.

I'm after a new jacket for beating and shooting in. It must be absolutely waterproof, and breathable. Lightweight would be helpful too. At present I have a Mad Dog camo jacket, and a tweed coat, but I want something different. I'm not too bothered about price - I know we have to pay for quality. Any suggestions?

Thank you all for the advice. I did Thursday and today at Teignmouth, but with no success. I was using an artificial sand eel, and I cast it out whilst wading, and let it swing round in the current. I used braid with a fluoro leader as suggested. The only time I saw an angler catch was on Thursday, and he was using liveys. The next time I go, I think I'll try them.

I'm looking for some advice for shore fishing for bass. I intend fishing on the South Devon coast with a spinning rod, reel loaded with braid, and some artificial sand-eel lures. I need to know when is the best time to fish - ebb or flow? I also intend to wade with chest waders, but I'm unsure about landing any fish caught. I could use a trout net, or is it best to beach them? Any advice would be welcome, as I have been told September is the best month for them. Cheers.

I tried a simple recipe with a couple of partridges I brought home from Beater's Day on Saturday. I simply plucked and gutted them, then I placed them in a roasting bag with some butter and seasoning. I also put a crushed clove of garlic and a wedge of lemon in the cavities, then roasted for an hour. The juices made a lovely gravy! I ate one last night and made some stock with the carcasses today. A lovely soup! I've also got a couple of pheasants hanging in the garage, so I'll do them tomorrow.

I had to replace my wellies this season. After having a look at all the brands in Countrywide, I bought a pair of Argylls (the farmer's wellies). They cost about £45 and they have served me well so far. They don't have a fancy liner, but I wear an extra pair of thick socks.

I agree with Miroku Moocher - the stealth net is very good. I got mine on eBay with some poles.

I have been beating on a couple of shoots this season, but we've been quite fortunate the weather has been relatively dry. I am beating tomorrow, and I reckon the underfoot conditions will be worse than usual due to the rain. I haven't encountered any freshly ploughed land so far, but there's time yet. I enjoy beating as it helps to keep me fit, but I agree that poor underfoot conditions don't help! A couple of weeks ago I decided to wear boots and gaiters instead of my usual wellies, and I came to grief in a horse field in mud up to my knees!

I was out this morning at first light and set out about 14 pigeon decoys and 4 crow decoys. The corvids came at regular intervals and I managed to bag 3 crows and 2 jackdaws as well as a pigeon. I used the shot birds as natural decoys, and I think that helped to draw them in. I packed up about noon. I was using a natural hide beneath a tree and behind a hedge. As the others have said, keeping very still and well camouflaged is absolutely essential. I normally sit on a bucket seat and keep crouched down until I hear them coming.
