  1. Why the 1"board, don't the springs just smack into it on a shallow run?
  2. could they not be made from say 3mm high tensilesteel wire?I have use of a machine at a relatives work place that bends tensile steel wire to any size/shape if i could get hold of one of these traps i am sure he could make them here.????Cheers IWM. It would be very interesting to see what price he could produce them for ....... I will talk to him this weekend but he will need a profile to work from. It must be the sameprice as the ones from france or no one will buy them?? iwm I'll post you one if you promise to send me a few of the new ones you make back. P.M. me your address.
  3. Like I said; I do like these traps. But one mole I caught today seems to be in two minds about them.
  4. For what you pay they're very good, very humane traps (a bit fiddly though); but they're not copper - just copper plated - so I carry a scythe stone with me to scrape the rust off before I set them in the ground. I'd also buy a couple of the setting pliers, or you'll have a job setting them without a pair, and they're bloody easy to misplace.
  5. Can I ask if/or where you've seen any info that people will actually need the RSPH level 2 Brian. - I'm genuinely interested; not just trying to catch anyone out. I had guessed the 'Think Wildlife' one-day course was more likely to be the 'certificate' mentioned on the label; on the grounds that its more likely to be open to farmers, gardeners etc. I don't agree with it either. I think a lot of this new legislation is designed to drive small companies out of business so that the big companies, who can deal with all the red tape, will benefit. I expect they are even lobbying in favour o
  6. No but as time goes by it may well be essential to have the RSPH2 certificate as a minimum in order to buy your rodenticides for use Mate, from what I’ve seen so far; the only people saying you’ll need RSPH 2 to buy rodenticide are the people selling the RSPH 2 courses. The only official line I’ve actually heard, is that from 1st june 2016 the label will have to contain the phrase: ‘For supply to and use only by professional users holding certification demonstrating that they have been trained according to the UK second generation anticoagulant rodenticide (SGAR) stewardship progr
  7. nice work, what does the tawny owl box look like?
  8. Mate, Here’s the link to Companies House, but setting up a limited company just to go ferreting sounds like a lot of hastle. https://www.gov.uk/government/organisations/companies-house I suspect a lot of ‘existing companies’ have just opened a bank account: Joe Bloggs T/A Pest Control – or whatever - then go to a no-thrills business insurer and get the lowest possible public liability insurance; probably cost you £150 or something like that (It’s generally only the PLI cert that property/land managers want to see) . That would be a very, very ‘Cowboy’ attitude it you were actually adver
  9. How credible a cheep alternative is a dim red filtered torch to a night vision scope, for rats, in your opinion? If you don’t mind me asking.
  10. Mate, In my opinion those Mini T-Rex are terrible wicked f*****g things. They might be strong enough to kill house mice ok, but on wild mice (especially Apodemus flavicollis) they leave so many of the poor things still alive and squirming around they might as well be called live capture traps. I’ve been using the Snap-e Traps (the ones with the yellow bar). I’ve found they are much cleaner at killing – especially when they’re inside the plastic boxes you can get for them. ATB.
  11. Did anyone else spot the ‘gratuitous beaver shot’ 1:02 into that video?
  12. I was given one of those bags by a rep about a year ago. I keep it in the car; seems to get rid of any bad smells ok – not that I keep dead rats in my car, but I will fart a fair bit on a long journey.
  13. If it ain’t the sort of thing a taxidermist would actually buy, I’d still be interested to know how much it would cost me to get it stuffed. Like I said: it’s a very unusual mole, so it’d be a shame to chuck it in the bin. I’d only want something simple. Cheers.
  14. Fair comment, but I have not had a landline for business or at home for about the last 12 years. Mobiles are easy, and despite odd problem reception areas, you can always answer them or return missed calls quickly. I don't have a receptionist and people are still reluctant to leave ansaphone messages. Mate, you can get an 0800 number and have it redirected to your mobile; that's what I do. Costs you all of about £15 a month, if that. Hope that helps.
  15. Thanks very much. Just to reassure you; the job I posted this thread about is going well – it’s definitely rats and they have been eating the bait at the points (when I said there ‘wasn’t much mess,’ I just meant there weren’t grains spread out across the area). Thing is, I’m just not someone who thinks they know everything, and what to do if the bait was going straight into a cache was a gaping hole in my knowledge. So, thank again for giving me an answer; much appreciated.
  16. Hi Talpa, hope you - or someone - don’t mind answering another question: If you suspect the rats have been storing the bait what do you do? Give them a bit of a break from baiting so they can eat their cache? You’ll appreciate that would go against a lot of what I‘d been told about baiting for rats, so I would like to find out what’s what. Thanks again.
  17. Thanks for your replies; very much appreciated
  18. I’ve got another job I could use some experienced advice on: I’ve got some possible customers with a couple of acres between them and some goats, ducks, that sort of thing. They’ve asked me to look in from time to time to check for rats, but they’re not going to pay for more than quarterly visits. I want to set up some monitoring points, but poison bait is obviously out of the question. The non-toxic monitoring bait is just as likely to be eaten by mice, voles, etc – they’re only interested in rats; happy to live with the mice. Trail cams are too expensive. I could use ordinary traps,
  19. You’re not the only one to be ripped off by them mate. A mate of mine paid to get listed on their site – he actually paid extra because he was told the money goes to charity. He never heard back, emailed them a couple of times, still never heard back. I doubt he’d want to take any further action, but I’ll PM you his details if you like. All sounds like a con to me
  20. Ideally I would have got 55s mate, but in the end I just added some 110s to a KG order – so I’m ok for the moment. I will be getting some 55s though, once I’ve saved some pennies. So if you know of a good deal on them I would like to hear about it. Thanks.
  21. I had a look on Fourteenacre for #55 body grips, and read: “these very effective traps are currently only approved for use on rats and mice, although that might soon change.” Does anyone know what that means? They’re not going to be banned are they?
  22. I found this very unusual mole. Its hairs are dark at the tips and a ginger blonde colour near its body. It’s currently at the back of my freezer. Is this the sort of thing a taxidermist would be interested in? If so, how much should I ask for it? Thanks.
  23. " I'm currently having a little 'spat' with a few animal rights morons on Twitter " Choose your battles Mate, I’m sure you’ve got better things to do with your days. You could post a link though; I could use a laugh. BTW, nice little find that Warthog
  24. Quick update: I went back to the site at first light this morning. 6 out of 7 points had been dug into, and half of those were virtually empty, with very little mess. So, other than not lining the bottom of the pit, I’m happy I’ve done better by not using plastic boxes. I was fairly confident I knew what I was doing, but it’s nice to have you guys here for a professional second opinion, so thanks again
