I found one of those once. I think they're pretty rare in England now.

Unheathly Interest In Mole Trapping.
Mr Muddy replied to Tiercel's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Let me tell you TC; I recently filed last year’s accounts and realised I’d earned at least 50% from moles – so, for good or ill, I am a molecatcher. I’ve spent the last three weeks doing nothing but moles, and I’ve spent a fair amount of that time in the gardens of million £ plus houses; usually while the owners are at work. So, while there in London working their bollocks off I’m wandering around the plush gardens they’re paying for, in the spring sunshine, occasionally catching the odd mole. You find it hard to name a better job than that -
Don't beat around the bush mate, just say what you really think!

After the recent posts about moles in flooded tunnels I found this youtube video about a creature called a Desman. Apparently it's one of the closest living relatives of the mole, (probably a nephew or something) so I recon moles might well be looking for worms in underwater runs; a bit like the desman's doing in the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7mSnjDLCLFI I tried setting some traps in fully flooded tunnels today - didn't really have a choice - I'll see how I get on.

Another Mole Trapping Thread - Gloves
Mr Muddy replied to outandabout's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I wear some of the yellow leather gloves you get from garden centres. The only reason I chose them is that when I was a kid I used to stay up to watch a program where the main character used to wear yellow leather gloves. The program was called 'V', it was about people fighting against space aliens. I expect if I saw it again now I'd think it was a load of s**t - still brought the gloves though, very happy with them too; taken the sting out of trapped fingers a few times this winter. -
A Little Tip For You Trappers Out There...

You Chaps who keep molecatching notebooks should consider getting together and publishing a few pages I recon you would knock the Jeff Nickels book into a cocked-hat -
Where Not To Set A Mole Trap?
Mr Muddy replied to mazperks's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I had a job early this week: big flat lawn, neat cropped grass, only a couple of hills; but all the wind blown leaves had gathered on the bits where the mole runs were. Looked like a road map - wish I'd taken a picture; I expect it will be gone by the time I go back. -
Mole Traps In The Frost
Mr Muddy replied to perthshire keeper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Yes, I saw that bryn - didn't have time to reply. I've not used nomole traps; but they look like expensive versions of pieges putange. Like I posted earlier, I carry a scythe stone with them - keeps them rough enough not to misfire (usually), and smooth enough to still work when the mole trips them. -
Matt, can I ask were the runs flooded when you set the traps? I've been leaving any that have more than a bit of water in them. Should I be setting the traps anyway?

learn to recognise a new one. That's what lazy sods like me do.

Couldn't agree more with that. There's nothing worse then someone staring at their boots and tugging their forelock while the customer tells them their job.

Mole Traps In The Frost
Mr Muddy replied to perthshire keeper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I tend to use them where I can't get into a straight run (I set half barrel traps where I can). I can only speak for my little part of the world, but with small gardens, tree roots, flower beds etc, I do use them quite a lot. Shropshire, If you're having trouble with the triggers pinging out - which I did when I first started using them - you can try roughing them up a bit; worked for me. -
I recon a few people will have rolled their eyes after reading that; why don't you put the traps in tunnels/boxes?

The Worst Trap,..... Ever !!
Mr Muddy replied to heritage's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
I'll like to have a look inside a beagle trap, but I'm certainly not paying £15 for the privilege. Nicepix; if your three beagle traps are just taking up space would you consider smashing one open and posting a picture of the mechanism on here? -
Can ya catch them alive Matt??? I might put a film up of me doing that soon..... Get some footage posted mate.... I have done...... the trouble is that likkle Florence loves to munch them, so whenever I flick one out she's straight on it Not that I'd deliberately set the dog on a mole you understand that would be against the Hunting Act Ha ha ....I never flick 'em.... They all go onto a couple of fields that owe me money,,,, I'm having fun repopulating land of a debtor.... There's more molehills than grass now! ha ha Not sure if this link will work. but it

Mole Traps In The Frost
Mr Muddy replied to perthshire keeper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Ha, ha. Yes, I tried exactly the same thing, Re: putting the traps on their sides on one of my jobs today. I'll be back to that job next week to see how I got on (I'm not one for this daily trap-checking bulls**t). -
a book, dvd, app or more likely a forum I should think. There has been some very good, innovative stuff posted on here in the last few days

Mole Traps In The Frost

It'll get you within a couple of meters mate, you'll probably still need some sort of marker (depends how long the grass is). They work for me is all I can say; it's very, very rare that I either lose or lose count of my traps since I've had one. -

Mole Traps In The Frost
Mr Muddy replied to perthshire keeper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
If my memory's working right; the ones I catch the 'usual' way up often have bloody mouths & noses, which I assume means their lungs are smashed-in pretty good. With the ones I catch on their sides I don't necessarily see any blood, but that could just mean they never lived long enough to take another breath, which is even better. Either way, in terms of being humane, I'd put them above the duffus traps which, in my experience, often trap moles behind the ribs. But I would imagine that nothing can touch a good quality Taplex for a quick kill, simply due to the power of the spring. All ju -

Mole Traps In The Frost
Mr Muddy replied to perthshire keeper's topic in Snaring, Trapping & Pest Control
Now you've mentioned it, I do get a lot of moles caught side-on: I think I even posted a picture of one earlier on this thread. I'm also with you in that I'm rapidly going off Traplines (I now only use them when there's physically not enough room to fit anything else down the hole). I've dug a lot of Traplines up to find a tuft of black fur between the prongs. And I know all traps will catch a mole by the wrist from time to time, but I've had a couple of Traplines that have caught the mole by the skin on it's belly. By the time I've dug the mole up it has twisted round and round and round -

I'm sure you're right about that TC. I find the square trigger also stays off the bottom of the run while I'm pushing the trap down the hole (they are sods for misfiring when you do this), then it sits flush with the earth when I bed the arms into the ground a bit. I tie the trigger on with a bit of waxed cord, and leave a loop in the other end to anchor the traps.
