Every animal wherever you go has a different personality. You can train and train but if you have the equivelent of a nasty teenager or a gamgster or whatever you will not change them however much you try. And even tame they are un predictable as many lion tamer will tell you. Well those that are still alive to tell the tale

I have 4 jills. I have no idea why but over 30 odd years i never get on with hobs. I have tried a dozen times and now don't bother. I get them done by a stud....

Getting Permission....i Hope This Helps...
Foxhole replied to Foxhole's topic in Ferrets & Ferreting
Farms always have rabbit problems but it depends where they are and if so are they affecting their land. Many times it's the farmer’s garden were they keep digging up his flowers etc...LOL Liveries usually want them as for them rabbits not creating warrens for obvious reasons. Crops are obviously the biggest threat to the farmers. Golf courses are excellent places but again there are a few Antis are around so the management are not overly keen although the further away from towns as in town members the more chance you have. If you can find a golf course on sandy ground you may have a goo -
Quite a bit actually...

I have to disagree in part. If you slip a female Red Tail at a rabbit by the time it gets going the rabbit may have escaped. However a male at about 2lb 2oz is perfect. They will go through a brick wall to get it.

Farmers are very suspicious and almost to the point of paranoid and if you get past that stage very pedantic with any stranger. First impressions mean much too many people but to a farmer/gamekeeper 100%. Just so one point can stand out make sure you know you are talking to the farmer, i can't make this any clearer as it really might be the stable muck out just getting rid of you.. -
Too many just breed for money and give you bull shit that they have been handled. What i do is say can i stay and see you handle it for 10 minutes and then can i for 10 minutes. You will know soon enough. AND make sure the ferret is fed right up before you handle it. Never feed it from the hand only like a rabbit leg but nothing that touches your skin or many kits will associate your hand with food and use it like that. I think with Kits that’s a big mistake.
-
I think that if you get new born kits and handle them from the start there will be no problem. However if you are buying kits at say 10 weeks old you are either buying a lot of hard work or much easier. I have bought kits at 10 weeks and they have been real bone crunchers as they probably have never been handled. There is nipping and biting and hanging on. I get the breeder to handle him/her for atleast 20 minutes and see what reactions are given off...

I wondered if this would help anyone as i hope it does. At one point i had 10,000 acres all over the south and got it all in 2 seasons. Because i just could not get round permissions i have let % go to friends or just left it. In the main i got permission for hunting birds of prey but that includes ferreting as in bolting rabbits so it is kind of joined at the hip. I will say from the first appearance to the last actions and i hope at least it goes some way in helping someone. 1 Turn up if you can in a decent car preferably 4X4 but as long as it looks presentable 2 Dress accordingly as in

DOC are just that. The egg the next day. There is everything in there for the chick to survive. DOC have been proved to be very nutritious. They even have heart and lungs and Kidney There is a worldwide much known aviary vet called Neil Forbes as this is often brought up by many falconers and if Neil says it’s OK it’s OK. However i do agree that too much of them are a bad thing.

I don't mind the nipping that's to be excepted with kits but biting obviously different. So at what point do you think that's it all trained and can biting come back at any point. it sounds like i might be a novice but i am not its just i never do forums and this the first one so getting just views on others thoughts to see if i can improve. Those who think they no everything no nothing so to speak

Brilliant...

Well i am not paying the money so he can do what he wants. He just wants the money and if somebody is stupid to pay him why not...I always think it's sad when a world champion of any sport comes back as it kind of ruins their crown they had . Schumacher a prime example...

The only kids i have left is Patterdales and a Hawk
-
It's a point we have to do but even when an adult what do you to handle them. Just a few minutes handling them or playing with them. I work them as soon as i can but if i don't for a while what do you do? I have patterdales so have to lock them away if i bring them into the front room . But it's not really handling them. I have been ferreting for years but do struggle to find the time to handle kits before they work. Is 5 minutes each day enough? What's your take on handling?

I use DOC (day old chicks) as i use them for my BOP but too much and they get the runs...

I think the Deben 3 is quite good. The problem with the 1 is its starting to get hard to get collars. The 1 was a favourite of mine.
