Hi,looking for a bit of info on a old man by the name of Pip Byrne,i have know him for around 20 years, used to meet him at gamefairs and he used to call on me every now and again for a dig and the odd course, the last i heard from him was about a year and a half, and havent seen him since,he is a small man,he used to be a taxi driver but had retired from this trade about 5 years now,he was always into his lurchers and terriers, has a great eye for a good dog,i remember him telling me he used to breed working wheaton,s in the late 60,s when badger digging was still legal,i havent heard from him in

Wheaton X Grey Anyone Use Them
Derek1962 replied to johnrussell84's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I bred a litter of wheaton greyhound x greyhound about 4 years ago,i knew the guy who owned the stud dog [wheaton x greyhound],he was a very good dog for fox and deer, afraid of nothing, this dog was put to a greyhound bitch and produced a nice few pups,i kept two back for myself,[a dog and a bitch] they turned out good workers, the dog being the best,he would course hares well, take fox day or night and was a handy dog to have around on a dig,he had a good brain and knew how to use it,the bitch on the other hand was,nt as good as him,she was a bit slower but still very game, she had her uses, she -
Was at a house party in North Dublin last night,it was close to a place called Saint Annes Park in Raheny, the owner of the house told me the place was full of foxes,so i shone the lamp into the football fields around the park and i counted 12 foxes, left the party around 3 and counted another 6 that crossed the M1 on my way home,so no shortage of foxes in Dublin, but you cant shoot them inside the park but i am sure you could lamp them with a dog .

had a bit of ground to hunt on around Meath about 15 years ago, great place to hunt, roughly about 500 acres of land, plenty of hares, loads of bunnies, and lots of foxes,we would hunt there every sunday, morning for digging, afternoon for hares and depending on the night a bit of lamping, but one guy brought a friend of his down from Louth to hunt mid week there, and then his mate brought down a load of his friends from up north and they coursed hares day in day out,and not only coursed the hares but coursed the farmers sheep, broke fences and left gates open,so the farmer decided no more dogs or pe

In the early ,s i used any lamp we could get our hands on,we tried everythng, from headlights of cars or motorbikes to hand held spotlight we bought up north,i think the best one we had was a searchlight from the top of a squad car [gardai],we took it off when it was parked on a country road checking out our mates doing a bit of digging,it was a good lamp,a nice tight spot and good distance,

More than likely the guy who owned this dog gave him a free rein when out lamping,so problems like that are hard to break, maybe a shock collar, chances are it will either kill or cure, had a lurcher years ago, done the same thing, first run was a nightmare,if he missed the bunny,he would run the whole field and the next one and the next one right into the next county, different dog in the daytime,i used a shock collar on him at night,it cured the problem till he run into a 5 bar gate and broke his neck.

we dont have to shoot them here. Foxes far tougher here - we need to shoot them before a dog gets anywhere near them..... Them Irish foxes are f****n gay..... the collie hound first cross is as good as any lurcher for fox, might not be a good hare dog but will lamp ,bush with terriers, ideal companion when your out ferretting and most will do any job you put them up to,i kept a first cross collie for years, she was as good as any bull greyhound, afraid of nothing, would kill foxes with ease, she lacked speed for a hare but would lamp all night and give you 100% on every run,i b

26 to 32 inches are great for that open countryside, but in the paddocks we hunt here in Ireland you need something small and sharp and can find top gear very quickly,so anything from 16 to 25 would be ideal for me,but everyone to their own,i knew a guy that lived in Nt Dublin,he always kept big lurchers and i mean big, they were great in open land where they could course with ease but in small land they were useless, and a smaller lurcher would make a show of these giants, when i mets this guy at a few shoes and i remarked on how big they were he always answered,;did i ever see a big horse that c

Iwas over in the dog pound in Finglas last week looking for a lurcher that went missing from a mate back garden, and i seen a bitch that looks something similar to the one on this forum,i asked where they got her and one of the guys told me she was dropped into the pound a few days ago,i noticed she had a few marks on her face and she looked in very good condition, chances are this is your bitch,i asked what will happen to her and they said she would be rehomed if not claimed i was only brousing this forum and i seen your post of your missing lurcher,,their phone number is ..018383236,
