Hi, I'm new to shooting and after reading the FAQ stickys at the top I'd just like to ask a few, probably basic, questions! At the moment I shoot sub-12 air rifle at public ranges, but thinking of joining a proper FAC rated rifle club as well. 1. As I understand it, you need to have a valid reason for owning any FAC rated gun, but joining and shooting target at a rifle club would be a valid reason on its own? I'm not too bothered about shooting live quarry (at the moment) so not searching for any permissions and don't intend to for the foreseeable future. 2. If you have an FAC rated air gun

Very Quiet Pellet Trap / Backstop

Is that a joke or you really want me to?? Lol. I have some other carpet offcuts I can try to see if they are tougher. The thicker carpet tiles at the back might be tougher too I've yet to reach them. I'd have ideally made it another 2 to 3 inches deeper, but just used wood I had available at the time. But I guess if its going through three layers in one shot then another couple of inches wouldn't make too much difference. I'll just have to move the targets around on it, plenty of room to do that. -

Well I've finally built it! Its 500mm square. Here's some pictures. I need to swap the 5mm sheet of plastic for a sheet of steel once I can get hold of one. Pellet embedded itself in layer 3 at the first shot. Thanks everyone for sharing your ideas. -
Great stuff this! It helps alot to visualise it on the software to be fair. According to the software I should be able to zero my scope at 12 yards in my garden and that is equivalent to a 33 yard zero which is my optimum for the 1" kill zone. Just got to put it all into practice now! Thanks everyone Pianoman, I'm sure my next question at some point will be how to use mildots!

I've just downloaded the Hawke ChairGun software and have been playing about with it. Definitely learnt something here. I'm finding the software quite useful too. If I set the zero range to 30 yards, its telling me I'd be within half an inch high or low of the target between about 8 to 35 yards. This would seem to be the ideal setting for me at the moment. Amazed that at 50 yards the pellet will drop nearly 4 inches, which is more than I thought. What's also surprising is I thought these guns could shoot 100 yards or more, yet the software is saying the pellet would drop over 40 inches

Thanks for that. I knew to aim high at longer distances but never knew I had to aim low in the middle range and then aim high again at very short ranges. That's very counter intuitive. No wonder I couldn't hit short/medium range targets very well last week at the club. In the video, Si suggests that zero-ing at 19 yards eliminates need to hold under at all. Is this recommended and is it the easiest for beginners?

Hi, In my garden I will only be shooting about 10m. At the HFT club I will be shooting anywhere between 10 to 50m. In time I may try different clubs with FT out to longer distances. Will I need to rezero/adjust my scope when I switch between shooting in the two locations? I was going to zero my scope tomorrow for the 10m garden target. When I attend the club will this mean I am shooting high or low at the longer targets? I have been reading up on scopes but not sure I understand how the zeroing really works yet. At the club should I zero at a mid range (between 25m and 35m), th

The scope is unzerod. I removed it from the rifle to change its position as it was too close to my eye. At 5ft square im going to have to hang carpet at the back then to start with as not making anything that big, which i can remove as i zero the scope. How far will a single pellet travel though assuming no existing pellet holes. -

There is only one thing that would fit your needs, and that's plate steel, which is to noisy for what you need it to do, anything softer will deteriorate pellet on pellet, think you have to except the fact that your fence line is your down fall, and not the lads that are trying to help you out, good luck with your quest I'm very grateful for the help I've received on here and the ideas have been great. I never said a word against anyone trying to help me out. Whilst the idea's have been great I'm still unsure about the required size to be safe. Any idea's on the answers to my 2 questi -

Well we aint all lucky enough to have loads of acres to shoot on are we. I'm just trying to make the best of what I have. I am a member of a club but can't go all the time. There's been some great ideas in this thread but they are all different. Yes I have been bumping this thread up too much, and maybe I should have been much more specific in my questions so I'll do that now. 1. What is the minimum size needed to guarantee that a non zero'd scope will not miss the box at 10m? 2. What is the minimum depth needed to ensure the pellets don't go all the way through the carpet layers? -

Well I now have: 2 sheets of 600mm square thin steel plate. 1 piece of 600mm square 40mm thick kitchen worktop 6 inch thickness of 500mm square carpet tiles (some with thick rubber backing) Wood for sides of box. So the only thing now is some way of holding the carpet in the box when its vertical. -
Thats nice one. But I was only looking at the £15 Buffalo river ones from redbeck.

Hi, Sorry if this is a stupid question. I have a HW97KT which is just over 40 inches in total length. What size gunslip is best? The one I'm looking at comes in either 44", 46" or 48" length. I don't know if there is a reason I shouldn't just get the biggest one. Thanks

Thanks for all the replies so far, its given me some great ideas and tips. So far I've got a piece of 600mm x 600mm sheet steel and a piece of 600mm x 600mm x40mm chipboard kitchen worktop. The worktop and steel sheet will form the back of the box, and I'll use about 6" wide wood for the sides, which will allow a depth of 4" carpet in the middle. Should give me a nice size area for attaching targets to. My only concern is whether the carpet will want to sort of sag out of the middle once it's upright. Not sure how to stop this. Edit. Hmm having watched that video again I am wonderi -

I'm struggling to believe a box of sawdust can stop a air rifle pellet I really am. It punched straight through a 6mm sheet of ply yesterday and left a dent in the fence behind it. -

Here is my garden. The bit of wood against the fence panel at the back is the only possible location for a target. And a view from upstairs so you can see the pond more clearly. -

Surely the problem with that is after a few shots the bag will be decimated and all the bark/sand will fall out everywhere. -

Dont know if i'll be lucky enough to find any steel plate like that. In any case im going for silence so I might be able to get some 500x500mm carpet tiles which would make a nice size. Just need some way of keeping the carpet tiles in the box when positioned vertically. Have you been able to guage how deep the pellets are penetrating into the carpet? -

Wont pellets bounce off the metal? I might go with a complete carpet front and pin the targets on. -
The ocular lens seems fine at the fully screwed in position. As I unscrew it it doesnt start to go blurry until about half way out. Thats with my contact lenses in. Im not sure im doing it right. I pointed it at blue sky with the ao in the infinity position.

Mister gain that looks ideal thanks. Do all of your pellets just embed themselves into the carpet? For scope zeroing what kind of area would I need to cover to be completely safe at 10m. Ie would a non zerod scope completely miss that box?
