  1. Will be mainly used for bushing to running dogs and ratting but there's a lot of Charlie in my area so it's very possible it could self enter a fox earth after bumping the fox from cover and I'd have to get it out sonehow. Just wanna know if it would be able to hold its own against a fox and not come off injured. it won't be a hardcore digging dog or anything.
  2. Hi everyone, I've put up a few posts on the lurcher and bushing forum as I am intending on getting a terrier and a lurcher. I have done a lot of reading up and asking my friends opinions but they all work large lurchers and spaniels. I am interested in a border terrier but wonder what they're capable of doing. Are they a bit soft? Thanks. Joe.
  3. It will be mainly on farmland lamping then mooching around daytime in various areas. No rocky ground or any ground that looks too challenging. My mates whippet manages fine and so does the small lurcher.
  4. My first lurcher was a first cross, very easy to train and bring on.Their seems to be a thing on here about collie cross greyhounds as not a good first lurcher, can,t get my head round it?I'm not knocking collie x's, I've had a few and my first dog was a collie x. They are easy to train, but they pick up bad habits just as quick as good ones. Some dogs with half or more collie can easily become obsessed with a certain activity, which can become a pain in the arse ( I have made these mistakes before). A beginner is better with a dog that learns at the same steady pace that the handler learns. Not
  5. I will work the dog, I'll lamp with the dog as often as I can and get out through the day a lot too. Thanks for your advice mate.
  6. I don't think I'll need much intelligence, just pace and turning. I've been told if the dog is too intelligent they get bored easily which I understand.
  7. What pros does collie bring? I really don't want to ruin a dog I will be able to put the time in I just want an easier going type to start with. Thanks everyone.
  8. What are the greyhound whippets like has anyone reading had one? I thought collie crosses were more for coursing?
  9. Yeah I thought that but i just wanted a bit of insight from some experienced guys, I just really don't want to pick a breed that's too hard to train as a first lurcher.
  10. My mates have got all sorts, most run deerhound or bull crosses but the two lads that I mainly go out with have a whippet and a small whippet x lurcher, the whippet seems the better of the two but I don't know if that's just a coincidence. I didn't want to pick a breed just based on those two.
  11. Thanks for all your quick replies lads. Oh forgot to put bitch or dog or does it not matter much?
  12. I am looking at getting a small lurcher for rabbiting and lamping rabbits too, temperament wise which cross would be easiest for me to train, calmer and generally less of a handful but still work well. Don't want to bite off more than I can chew. I'm looking at whippet size. Not interested in fox. Any advice would be good, thanks.
  13. Everyone seems to be behind the beddy whippet, what's their temperament like in general? (I know obviously they won't all be the same personality lol). I'm strongly leaning towards along legged JRT or something crossed with one and a beddy whippet atm. Thanks for all the great advice lads .
  14. Does the beddy change it entirely for the better or are there any major drawbacks? I'm torn between the two atm. Is there major temperament changes?
  15. That JRT whippet looks good. How does crossing the beddy over the whippet effect it? I was thinking long legged JRT so I think I'll go for that. Just the whippet or beddy whippet to decide between really.
  16. I'll definitely look at a 3/4 whippet. What benefits does the Bedlington bring? What does it do that the whippet won't? know this is in the lurcher discussion page but any views on long or short legged jrts would be appreciated too.
  17. Mainly daytime mooching. I doubt I'll do much lamping but it's a possibility. Mainly on farmland, some woodland and some densely covered areas. I don't have ferrets but my friends do. All in all the dog will be mainly worked with the terrier during the daytime. Thanks for advice guys.
  18. Hi everyone. I'm interested in rabbiting, going to be buying dogs very soon. Gonna get a JRT and a small lurcher or whippet. Think I'm going to get the terrier trained first then get the lurcher or whippet. Just wanted anyone with experience to comment on what a whippet would be better at and what a beddy whippet would be better at. Pros and cons really. Thanks.
  19. Great advice. I'll look into russels abit more. Try to work out whether long legged or short will be better.
  20. Nice looking dogs mate. Will the russell work thick cover? What cross lurcher do you use or is it a purebreed?
  21. Hello mate. I thought a bigger lurcher is slower at turning etc. If you know a good rabbiting cross I'll check it out and certainly consider it. Thanks for the input mate.
  22. Yeah I'm going to get the bushing dog first and bring that to a good standard then get the whippet or whippet cross once the first one is working well. I'm just looking for a good little rabbiting duo. Any opinions on the Bedlington whippet?
