Slip Lead Or Anti-Pull Harness?
shootinforfood replied to shootinforfood's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
thanks beast. he walks well beside me the majority of the time. he will walk past dogs in close proximity and not even look at them, unless the bark. then he goes mental and starts pulling towards them. the anti slip harness works ok, but sometimes he fights it and keeps pulling. think I will give the lead a try. at least that way if he starts pulling I can pull him back and his head shold come around too. the chain point on the harness is on his back so he just comes up on his hind legs he is getting better slowly, but I think a good slip lead will help him learn that he is not to lun -
have bought a training dummy for when I eventually get to the retrieval stage of the dogs training. do you use scent on the dummy or just use it as it is?

met this arse a few years ago. not long after I started hunting. went to Cheltenham to meet a friend that had just moved and gained a new permission. went into town for a Chinese afterwards as we didn't manage to bag anything edible and he was doing some publicity thing on a plinth with media all over him. crowd was allowed to ask questions so my mate shouted out, 'whats the name of your local butcher?'. crowd went silent, the ignorant arse muttered something about Williams and then moved on... bloke is an idiot, cant stand his voice, his cooking or his restaurants.

Slip Lead Or Anti-Pull Harness?
shootinforfood replied to shootinforfood's topic in Working Dog Health & Training Talk
am in the process of heel at the moment, but he is still getting distracted by other dogs, mainly if they bark, or are running round uncontrollably with their owners shouting at the top of their voice to try and control them. he has always been allowed to become very excited by previous owner and my missus up until now, so will take a bit of time I think to get him to the standard where I am confident of having him off the lead and still walking to heel avoiding distractions I try my best to avoid being around others during the early stages but it isn't always that easy and if the other do -
have started to notice some small swelling around the jew claws on my lab. it doesn't seem to be giving him any discomfort, but looks as if it could if it gets worse. any advice on what it could be or how to cure it? also, is there any practical use for these claws, can they be removed by vet, does the dog need them?

I am in the process of retraining my nearly 5 year old black lab x as a gundog retriever. I wont be taking him on group hunts, just taking him out with me when I go out for a few birds for the farmer, so he doesn't need to be perfect, just obedient and able to resist distractions. I am looking into either a GSP or Lab puppy soon to train properly from scratch to eliminate bad habits. I have been using an anti pull harness for the last 2 years on every walk, as he is extremely strong, and without the harness, my missus cant hold him, and I have struggled on occasion. the harness works w

How Did You Come Up With Your Username?......
shootinforfood replied to B.P.R's topic in General Talk
current user name simply because I eat the majority of what I shoot. also have one 'broken biker', because I wrote off my first bike, a cbr 400 rr nc29, and broke myself quite a bit too lol -
my 4 and half year old black lab x called max. he is my first dog (not counting parents dogs as I wasn't responsible for feeding walking and washing them) he has had no real training except a bit of basic sit, stay and recall at short distance. had him since he was 2, had a very rough time as a pup, first owner beat starved and locked him in cupboards. second owner treated him as a child and let him get away with murder. now I have had him just over 2 years and am now trying to train him as a retriever. going well so far, have managed to re groom the sit, lay down, and walking to heel on l

thanks guys. I have been to sportsman gun centre, my local, and have held a few shotguns, and like the feel of all of them. held a Baikal and quite liked it. incidentally, I will be taking a few lessons at my local clay pigeon range and they use baikals as their hire guns, so I shoulg be able to get to know them well enough to know if I like them. does anyone have rough idea how long a clay shoot will take with 25 pigeons and some pauses for instruction, and about 15 mins of free shooting to get used to how the gun reacts?

cheers guys. hadn't thought of the bird of prey guys, im sure there are two with peregrines near me, often see one of them from the top of my permission. farmer isn't worried about how much gets shot, as long as we assure him it is getting shot so thing I will just start leaving them under the hedges thanks guys

even the foxes? lol

up until now I have disposed of my inedible kills via the permission owner. he had an incinerator, but has now gotten rid of it and has said we all need to deal with the kills ourselves. all clean rabbits and woodies either go in the pot or in the dog, but what about crows, magpies and foxes? what do you do with them once they are shot?

I was told by the vet that having jill spayed will sort the issue of being in heat causing problems...is this correct? don't have ferrets anymore, both died a few years ago suddenly, both in the same night.

What Decoy Set Up Are Yous Using?
shootinforfood replied to Haggis81's topic in Pigeon Shooting & Decoying
I use a few full body pigeons and a full body magpie spaced out quite well. use them as distance markers too for ranging shots. I have a small owl decoy but find it only really works in winter if its perched in a tree. crows go mental for it, but its hard to get a shot with air rifle as they don't stay still -
not that I know of, except scrap yards and insurance auctions, but you would probably get whole bike from auction and have to strip it yourself. keep an eye on ebay, always a few engines rattling around on there. I recently bought a drz400 engine for a go kart project quite cheap. plan on turbo'ing it before it goes in the frame.

each to their own, but if I pulled that on a night out im afraid she wouldn't like my reaction...

I like chops with jap inline 4's like the gsf 1200, or zrx 1200 enignes. some with the likes of gsxr and cbr engines look good but have to do a bit more to make them special

you could try oil cooled instead, there are some rather interesting ways of hiding the oil cooler if you wanted it to be a clean looking engine

he is a bit jumpy around shotguns, but fine with the air rifles. he is getting used to shotguns, I took him out with a local guy and held him back while the shots were being taken until he stopped flinching then gradually moved closer. never actually sent him out to retrieve though. he can run like the best of them, crazy speeds for a big un. he is a tad over weight at the moment, my son loves letting him take treats from his hand lol. got any tips for starting him off as a retriever?

I like watching peregrines working, especially wild ones. I can remember the first time out on my current permission, dropped a rabbit about 40 yards away with a mates AA s410 FAC, got up off my knee to see a buzzard land next to it, pick at it, then fly off with it lol

hi all. I have a 4.5 year old black lab x. not entirely sure what he is crossed with, vet thinks possibly some form of terrier. never had any proper tests done as is he isn't violent or aggressive so never felt the need. anyway, he was badly mistreated as a puppy, his first owner locked him in a kitchen cupboard and moved out of the flat. he was found about 5 days later in a bad way, very thin, bad hips and hind legs and very nervous around people. signs of being beaten and neglected and brusing on his stomach. the woman who rescued him had him for about 18 months until her neighbo

I usually find that working on my own or my fathers house takes a lot longer than working on customers houses. maybe its because we stop for tea more often and don't mind having a bit of a chat instead of getting our heads down and getting the job done so we can be off to the next

Does Anyone Use Their Turrets For Shooting ?
shootinforfood replied to Craig Fosse's topic in General Airgun Discussion
I do on my .17hmr, but don't bother with the air rifles, only need a little bit of hold over as I tend to try and put myself at my zero distance before shooting -
im waiting for a third to be started...
