You're a miserable bunch of cynics! Let some of us idealists day dream

The first time my bitch caught a rabbit and handed it to me, still alive, I felt ecstatic, the best high ever. It's the sheer beauty of what they do, the intimacy of it - I've never been out with someone else it's always just me and my dogs - the feeling of having a place in the natural order of things. It's f*cking miraculous. Could go on cos I'm a bit pissed but what everyone else said, me too

She looks like a Ruby to me - very nice looking pup

Nice to see you over here

Shame about the birds but that gave me a good laugh

Pets at Home sell 'Dog Rocks' which I think are meant to reduce the effect of urine on your garden. Never bothered myself because the garden's a mud bath anyway with between 2 and 4 dogs tearing round it at any time I've given up....

Plates of meat - feet And I thought it was Berkley Hunt, not grumble and hunt, which is whycalling someone a Berk isn't as innocent as it sounds.... -
Great looking dog. In my (not huge) experience of rescue lurchers (I have two), they know members of their own species when they meet them. You could muzzle him in parks etc until you're sure. There have been incidents with cats though and I know of a couple of rescues that have killed cats so you might want to keep an eye on that. You may already know this site: www.lurcher.org. It deals specifically with rescue lurchers and would probably be of help. I hope it's OK to post another web address on here. If not I'm sure it'll be dealt with pronto.... Of my two, ones a good pet and occasionall

Out of my two rescues one's not much cop as far as hunting goes and the other is absolutely spot on and does everything whole heartedly, so it might work out. Hope so. Dogs end up on the loose for other reasons than being no good.

Good on your mate. Both of mine are rescues.

Your vet sounds like a bit of a tw@t. Why can't he at least enter into a discussion with you? Mind you, asking him to put something in writing was probably a bit provocative I give my dogs boosters because I travel and take the dogs with me when I go, including into cities. I've heard of a couple of country dogs like mine that haven't had their boosters and been taken into cities where they've died of (I think) parvo.

Thanks for the advice everyone. It's crawling with sheep round here and we'll all be more relaxed when I get this sorted out
-
Fantastic pic, wish I could post one like it! Thanks Thurso jack, by doing what you've suggested for a while now I've got them to the point where they'll walk past sheep and not look if they're on the lead or under VERY close supervision, but I KNOW that if they were to run ahead they'd be in there like a shot so like tote says this is the next thing to tackle. Anyone got experience of using these collars? I know some people think they're cruel, but not as cruel as getting shot by a farmer as far as I can see. But I've heard you have to get the timing just right..... Are there any trainers
-
I'm wondering if it's possible to stock train an adult dog or is this one of the things that has to be done when they're young? Any suggestions for getting them right with sheep? Thanks

I've read about tick removers but never seen or used one. Are they any good?

That's a fantastic story beautifully written DS. But you know us women are just as protective and a force to be reckoned with if anything threatens our own too
-
Aha, there you are! You did beat me to it Thanks everyone for the warm welcome.

Sorry if you all know this already but you can report missing lurchers on www.lurcher.org/lsuk/report form.html You can report found lurchers to them too. Got a feeling I'm doing a grandmothers/eggs thing here, but just in case.... Just looked and seen this info's pinned at the top here. Might hve known

Thanks for answering, oldskool. You're right I need to be patient, think I'm more frustrated than him! He's very keen so I think once he's got the hang of it (and me, I'm new to this lark so I'm having to learn fast) he'll be well away.

Someone with much more experience than me is taking me out lamping in the autumn. He told me to drop a rabbit skin covered dummy in the dark, shine a light on it and send my dog for it to get him used to following the beam. Trouble is my dogs out of action with a badly injured toe and has to stay on lead. I'm not taking any chances with him otherwise he risks losing it. Is there any training I can do with him that won't put pressure on his toe or get him even more frustrated than he is already? Any thing I can do in the house or garden or on a long line? Thanks
-
Thanks for that! I've spent time on non hunting lurcher sites and in lots of ways they're great but I've got worn down by people jumping on me when I celebrate my dogs catching rabbits even with an inexperienced hunter like me and am looking forward to sharing successes and learning on here. I'm totally stalled at the moment as my best dog is injured and may lose a toe if it doesn't heal - it's reopened twice - so we're lead walking and frustrated while my lovely big bum bitch bounces around ineptly, bless her.

It's hard to join this site you know. You lot all seem to know each other well and the banter is furious which is a laugh to read but not something a stranger can join in on. Also, if like me you're inexperienced and trying to learn you can easily look like a twat when you're not you're just being tentative cos you don't really know the lie of the land on here. I don't know if I'm one of the people you're worried about and i don't know what to do about it if I am. I joined to learn but I hardly dare ask a f*cking question at the moment the threads go ballistic so fast.

My vet rotates the vaccinations so they don't get the same thing each year. Most vaccines only need to be boosted every 3 years (there are some exceptions, Lepto's one I think). So my dogs get jabbed every year but not with the same cocktail of vaccines. This is better for the dog's immune system and long term health.

I'm not all that experienced in this but have been involved in rescues where you end up dealing with the products of ill thought out breeding. Isn't the problem that out of the litter you might keep one or two pups while the others go out into the world with all their potential bad habits installed. Somewhere down the line they either f@ck up and get dumped and end up in rescue if they're lucky or whatever. And some of them end up breeding and then you've got even more pups with potential problems in the world causing problems to people and other dogs and suffering themselves as a result. Br

I've heard of a couple of dogs coming off worse with them - nasty wounds from their tusks?
