  1. I think I might just have secured my first ever permission. A smallholding up the hill from me which breeds organic pigs and chickens is overrun with rabbits and is happy for me to go up with my dogs and see what I can do. They understand I'm not very experienced but are interested in hunting and want to support us. I'm totally excited, it's an opportunity for me to work openly with the dogs. Don't laugh now (too much) we're talking about ONE field. But still, it'll be all mine and it's a start
  2. Well apart from high levels of intelligance and water proofness, they'd be hypoallergenic for sneezy hunters and presumably might not look very much like a lurcher which could be handy for stealth Don't want one tho......
  3. I met someone recently contemplating a poodle sire for her deerhoundx. They are technically working dogs aren't they? And reputed to be very intelligant and athletic. Get over your manly prejudices, it might make a good dog!!!
  4. I was thinking about this last night while looking at a conference run by the Oxford Centre of Animal Ethics (yes I know I should have known better)...The conference is about the relationship between animal abuse and violence towards humans - there were sessions on the relationship between animal abuse and violence against children/partners etc. There does seem to be evidence for this. But then I came across a session called 'Offending patterns and criminal profiling of individuals who hunt with dogs'. No doubt they'll run this conference without any challenge to equating hunting with animal a
  5. I think the general principle with bones is don't feed weight bearing bones because they are more brittle but ribs etc are fine.
  6. crinky have you got three hands mate Lg a priest is a cosh you use to bash things on the head to kill them. Necking them's easier and doesn't require equipment which, if you're anything like me, especially if you've got children to distract you, you'll forget anyway!
  7. Does the swimming do the trick bill ? Just asking because I had a friend who swam for Wales at the Commonwealth Games and he said he was fit for swimming but couldn't run if his life depended on it - if he was being chased he'd just have to run to some water and swim away Maybe it's different for dogs though? Just wondering because I think one of mine would swim but I haven't particularly focussed on it as a fitness technique. Very nice dog too snoop. Look forward to seeing his progress.
  8. I missed most of the last series so that's great for me. Just been reading Hugh FW's book on meat - it's fantastic! Belongs to a friend, would love my own copy but it's expensive.
  9. Really enjoyed that, be nice to see your mate's photos.
  10. That's interesting juckler, I wonder if that's the sort of thing I've heard about then. I don't want to work my dogs as such - apart from anything, my dogs are rescues and it's a condition not to work them. But I do like to go out and try for one for the pot, one for the dogs' breakfast, without running into trouble....
  11. That's what I thought, just wanted to check! Thanks. Sometimes I can hardly stand the lack of freedom I'm inexperienced and live in the middle of sheep farming land with not a foot of arable anywhere. Maybe I could get permission on the allotments or something
  12. Simoman, I think you're right, in which case permission's pretty unlikely to say the least Sometimes I feel like moving!
  13. Having looked at this again I think this might be one of those really daft newby questions I suppose what I'm trying to check out is, is there any true common land in England or Wales now, or is it all owned by someone who has to give me permission if I want to go and intentionally hunt on it?
  14. I've noticed people mentioning 'common land' for hunting for hunting on when you don't have permission anywhere.....I was under the impression that every square inch of land in Engalnd and Wales (don't know about Scotland) was owned by someone and that you had to have permission to hunt on it. Have I got this wrong? Apologies if this is a stupid question.
  15. I can well believe it now but I was pretty naive about it until recently. Yet another thing I've learned!
  16. All this, and some other threads about is this or that person OK?, have brought home to me how divisive the current climate is. If you don't have any permissions, but still hunt, you're going to be cautious about posting on here - especially pictures. As a result you can look dodgy cos you don't back up what you say, and you can be suspicious of innocent questions. Of course you can feel these things if you do have permissions too if you think there's a serious anti on the other end of the questions. There's probably nothing to do about it but it's a damn shame and it means people aren't as w
  17. After a childhood dog. And because I am a little bit of a..........
  18. Thanks for that tote - I've passed the info on.
  19. My friend's lurcher seems to have some kind of pain/discomfort around his back/hips. It's intermittant and the vet hasn't found anything through a physical exam. I've heard that a good greyhound man can find things other people can't. So, any recommendations/suggestions? Thanks
  20. Day time rabbits so far but I'm hoping to learn some lamping skills in the autumn.
  21. Not a cat in hells chance. Weeeeelll, if you don't ask you don't get Don't blame you, she's a charmer!
