Really like the look of your pack. Bet the beagle x sings it's head off when on something?!
-
What a great pack! Like you, I can cope ok with coming home empty handed, but get disheartened if we don't even see anything!

Messing about with a flirt stick - you can see the fox brush just disappearing at the top of the picture!

My bushing terrier. Very happy with her!

This dog's been missing for over a week, likely to have been either stolen or picked up so may be anywhere in the country by now. He's microchipped to Lurcher Link. Please keep an eye out for him: http://www.doglost.co.uk/dog-blog.php?dogId=48148

I've seen some really nice ferreting dogs bred by Typ Ratcher in Cumbria (not sure if I've spelt his name right mind!).
-
What an amazing response! Kaye is busy walking and feeding 30+ dogs a day, so if you have something to donate that's too big to post (and you're not coming on the day) if you pm me your whereabouts I'll see if I can find someone local to you to pick it up and ferry it up the country to us. You lot are great

teaching a terrier to bush and work..?
Scallywag replied to dannyevans1990's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
Thank you - she was MEANT to be just for bushing but turns out she has ideas of her own. But I'm too old and my backs too bad for proper terrier work! -

Ps, teach 'bring it' and 'give', too, otherwise if it catches anything for itself it'll stay in cover and stuff it's face! Here's mine with her first solo catch - Sorry if I'm teaching grandmothers to suck eggs, just so delighted with her! -

Scallywag replied to dannyevans1990's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I spend most of my days bushing with the terrier and 2 lurchers, but have only trained one terrier to bush so am no expert. But my tips, for what they're worth, are - Make sure you train a command to get the terrier to go in to cover and teach it to go where you point, too, so that if you see a bolting rabbit going into cover and the terrier misses it you can direct it, quick (I say 'go see' and point and in she goes). Also at some point, when your terrier clicks with it all, you're likely to have trouble getting it back - once they start they're not keen to stop. I dealt with this by going o -
These are my two - the dog in front is about 8 , the bitch behind about 9. I don't work my dogs hard but they're out bushing with the terrier every day and ferreting in season and they don't show any sign of needing to retire. Neither would shine on hare but for the kind of mooching about I do, I reckon they've got a few years in them yet!

You've got her in very nice condition! Good luck with her.

How did you go on with this? Did you get a treatment? be interested to hear if it worked as well for you as it did for me.
-
This might be near to you http://www.watkinsmctimoney.co.uk/McTimoney-for-Dogs.html I had a similar treatment for one of my dogs and she's on fire now, it totally sorted her out.

Many thanks for taking the time to give such good advice - I've learned a lot just from reading! b53 I'll pm you tomorrow with contact details and a bit more info, when I'm not in a rush.

My friends has a rat problem. The back wall of their garden consists of a tall stone built buttress (about 15 ft tall) at the top of which is a road, then more hill going up. They have a shed and chickens against the wall and a thriving colony of rats visiting both. They wanted to avoid using poison and asked if my terrier might help but looking at it, I guess the rats are living deep in the hill side (and all the drains etc that are in there) and would be hard to smoke out - but I don't know about ratting so this may be quite wrong. Is there anyone here who lives near Halifax, West Yorkshire

Are collie crosses too clever for the average lurcherman??.
Scallywag replied to mackay's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
I'm curious about this. Also, are they really harder to stock train? Do you need a different approach? -

Scallywag replied to rocky1's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
Where did I say that it was ok what the lad did? Of course it's not ok! I was just saying that the dogs might turn out to be nice mongrels. I dunno what they might be good for - bushing? Keeping someone warm on a cold night? Making the kids happy? Who knows...... That's not saying that it's ok to pass any old mongrel off as a useful working lurcher. -

If you don't think about lurchers, just look at them as dogs, they're nice looking young mongrels and there's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned mongrel, they're sometimes worth their weight in gold!
