  1. I like dogs, I like their company and I like their looks, so I'm more than happy to have them indoors with me, wouldn't have it any other way. In my family, working dogs have been kept outside, but these were working collies who were out with their master all day every day and then kennelled at night. If you're out at work all day and then just taking the dogs out for hunting or exercise nights and weekends, it cuts down on the time you have with them and surely the bond between you is diminished? This might be an advantage if you want to get rid of the dog, but surely you want that bond for w
  2. Nice photos including one of my lad racing! Thanks for that - I didn't take a camera!
  3. One of my dogs started to choke last night and I administered something as close to the heimlich manoeuvre as I could manage, not having ever done it before on dog or human. It did seem to help but I was worried I could do her some harm through ignorance. What's the right thing to do if your dog's choking? You know, I mean really choking on food not just coughing due to eating too fast.....
  4. Where I live all the shops have agreed to get rid of them so are phasing them out. We've all bought cotton reusable shopping bags. Takes a while to remember to take them with you but it's no big deal and makes a huge difference to the environment. There's a few places doing this now I think.
  5. I've got two rescue lurchers. One hasn't been much cop for working - when I got her she jacked, wouldn't jump and killed sheep. Two and a half years on she doesn't jack, still won't jump and is better but not 100% with sheep. I'm careful where I take her but she caught well on our last outing so is coming on. Many people would rightly have decided not to bother with her but i was happy to have her as a pet. My second dog is spot on, I can't imagine how he ended up in rescue because he's a great dog. I wouldn't get rid of either of these dogs for anything. When I'm ready i'll get myself a pup
  6. Well according to most things written on this forum I'm of very little value - fat, female and nearly fifty. But I am passionate about hunting - need to do it in fact. I can stay out in all weathers and I'm tough and uncomplaining. I've found a couple of experienced hunters who don't care what I look like but like what I can do, which is work hard, accept advice, have a laugh and get on with the job. I'm don't want to be a man but I do insist on being a woman on my own terms, not someone else's. And unlike some of the men on here I do post about hunting and I don't need to exaggerate. I post h
  7. I go to shows for the simulated coursing and to socialise. I think they're fun. I show my dogs for fun and thoroughly enjoy myself. I think they're f*****g brilliant and love to show them off! I've been asked more than once by judges if I work them and met with approval when I say I do. I've got a couple of red rosettes and my dogs have honourable battle scars which haven't been a problem at all. That's just my limited experience fo course but why take it so seriously anyway? It's a good way of killing time with your dogs til the season starts again
  8. My mate's breeding his jill shortly and I'm hoping to get my first two ferrets from him. I'm starting from scratch and need everything for keeping and working them, so if anyone's looking to sell anything please pm me. Thanks
  9. I haven't been lamping with them although I may give my dog a go next season.
  10. Those of you making a great big fuss about hating gay men might be interested in a well known psychological defence called 'reaction formation'. Here's a definition or two .... Description Reaction Formation occurs when a person feels an urge to do or say something and then actually does or says something that is effectively the opposite of what they really want. It also appears as a defense against a feared social punishment. If I fear that I will be criticized for something, I very visibly act in a way that shows I am personally a long way from the feared position. A common pattern
  11. Had a fantastic day out on someone's permission today. Seems to be becoming the norm to be plagued by horses and it was awkward to ferret with extensive, cavernous warrens and one of the two ferret finders on the blink None the less we had a great day and got a better bag than the ONE rabbit I managed on my solo outing the other day .... We waited...... And we waited......... And we waited....... And every now and then we got moving....... Thanks to those who made today possible, we had a lovely day as usual
  12. I live about 8 miles from Tod. It's a mixed community - local people and various incomers including lesbians, hippies and some asian people. It's not always a relaxed situation unlike nearby Hebden Bridge which is affluent, tolerant and easy going. Tod's poorer, more working class and there's more friction between the various groups who live there. The surrounding moors are OK and there are pockets of rabbits, big bunnies and lots of deer, if you're a nature lover It's quite horrible actually, I wouldn't want to live there......
  13. I'm looking after a friend's beddie/whippet this weekend, it's well bred form working lines and a vile f*****g dog, never had to be so hard on a dog just to make it tolerable. I believe they settle a bit when they're about 20 though......I know people love them but I wouldn't own one unless it was the last dog in the world.
  14. JRTxwhippet bitch called Nel. Evil stubborn disobedient dog, lived til she was 18, caught a few rabbits and squirrels, mainly caused me pain and inconvenience. All in all, a bloody fine dog
  15. This might be a crap idea, so people with more experience please put me right, but what about a bit of simulated coursing over the summer? Then she'll be running with another dog and might get used to following the twists and turns of the lure?
  16. The homeopathic remedy Silica helps your body to push out splinters and thorns. You should be able to get it from a good chemist or apothecary. I've seen it work and if you don't believe in homeopathy you could take it anyway cos it certainly won't do you any harm
  17. ......cos it's eaten the entire set of the encyclopaedia brittanica...........again
  18. She posts on there too Moll - sometimes I can't help wondering if all she's after is more hits on her website.......... Could be wrong of course
  19. Cheers SS60 and I agree with you totally, most of them aren't on our side and I wouldn't trust them either, just know this one person well and DO trust him but he's the exception, not the rule.
  20. Ok, can't resist one last little go.... 1. It's true that climate change is a natural process but very very few people still dispute that it is being accelerated and worsened by human activity. 2. We're not going to get a climate like Cyprus, we're going to get storms and floods and freak weather conditions and lots of people will end up with uninsurable homes. 3. Many Greenpeace activists are vegans and antis, my point is simply that not all of them are and some of them support us. And again, some of them might not work but then neither do all hunters. Some of them work hard to earn a l
  21. Ah well, I had a go, fair enough we disagree. Although I must say if you really think protests are only OK if they don't inconvenience people it's no wonder the Hunting Act was passed and is still in place
  22. Now now lads. Are you happy for the planet to fry? One of these people is my friend and neighbour. We go fishing together, he wants to come ferreting, he has a very handy little bushing terrier and thinks the Hunting Act is bollocks. Life's not that simple
  23. Fantastic photos and a great read. I'm new to this but I'd have my heart in my mouth putting a ferret into such hard ground. I wouldn't fancy that dig one bit!
