  1. Are you in the states Kate? I think things are a lot more polarised there than in the UK from what I've read/heard.
  2. Got a new camera LG?! Both dogs look great but Maple looks a bit spectacular in the sand pit
  3. If you read my post you'll see that although I am interested in and involved in lurcher rescue my brain has not turned to pink mush and I don't think the hunting animals we have are 'wittle doggie woggies'. I have no objection to culling or putting dogs to sleep humanely if necessary. Stereotyping is a dull witted way to try to argue your case. And I don't see anyone on here 'gushing' over any organisations, let alone those that have and do oppose hunting etc. What's more, the rescues I'm talking about certainly haven't had a hand in any of this. I've got no problem with strong opinions stron
  4. The trouble is, this problem needs a coordinated strategy - people shouldn't breed shit in the first place, breeders should take responsibility for their litters by homing responsibly or culling, and dogs that don't make the grade should be neutered and rehomed or humanely pts. Instead, good working dogs and crap working dogs and f****d up dogs that bite people are being picked up every day and something has to be done with them. Many get put to sleep, some get rehomed and some of them prove to be damn good working dogs in the hands of dilligent, patient people prepared to put the work in. I
  5. Wouldn't a few dogs be able to take a wolf? I thought that was what Borzois were for. And I think that's what's happening here too - http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Lx4T4H82Avo&...feature=related
  6. I spent twenty quid on a jar of Manuka honey last year. You can put it on wounds to help them heal and one of my dogs had a stubborn wound that was taking its time. While I was out my bitch nicked the honey, ate about fifteen quids worth then puked it up on my leg just as I sat down to eat my tea. The last fivers worth worked a treat on the wound mind you.
  7. A love of hunting dogs and a powerful need to kill something every now and then.
  8. Have you reported it to Lurcher Search and Dog Lost? Worth doing if you haven't. Sorry - just had a look and seen that you have. Good luck finding him he's a lovely looking dog.
  9. Please report this to the police - I live in West Yorks too and I don't want anyone to think they can take a shot or two just cos they're pissed off. If there's no stock near by he's a reckless twat and should be reported. Even if nothing's done it's on file in case there's ever a next time. Makes me really f*****g angry to read this.
  10. As far as Metacam and Rymadil go, some dogs do better on one than the other, so you might need to try both and see which your dog reacts best to. I've heard of some dogs gaining no benefit at all from one but doing well on the other, if you see what I mean.
  11. Wow, I think she looks amazing. A good example of how to grow old disgracefully
  12. Out ferreting recently I was convinced I knew better than my dog. He wasn't marking a warren I was convinced must have rabbits. In the end I put the ferret down anyway, without his mark and sure enough we got nothing. I learned my lesson. From now on I'm going to trust him.
  13. I may be wrong but it seems to me this one of the blessings of a lurcher with collie in - they seem more eager to retrieve.
  14. I'd pay for a weekend of ferreting and fishing but would want to be able to use the accommodation from Friday night so as to get a good long day in on the Saturday. I'd say most people who were travelling any distance would feel the same. If it was for a week, Saturday to Saturday would be fine.
  15. Ah right - my question was why not use food to train the retrieve. I've been lucky then - I used food to train and although I struggle with MANY other aspects of training and working my dogs, they both retrieve to hand. I've got away with it this time but I'll try other methods when I do it again.
  16. This was an genuine question - can anyone help me out?
  17. I'm about to get one built for myself and will be showing these pictures to the mate that's doing it for me. I've been told that ferrets like to lap water so that heavy bowls they can't upturn are a good idea? Have you put a tray of soil in there for them to dig in? (5th photo) How deep is it?
  18. You know a lot more than me. Mind educating me? Sounds like I did something I shouldn't have!
  19. I'm not all that experienced but my two lurchers do retrieve to hand. I trained them by doing the training at dinner time and by throwing the dummy then offering a raw chicken wing/rib of lamb. They were hungry and wanted their dinner so they were happy to swap!
  20. Apparently some of his pups have had hip problems lately too. I know some people on here have had good dogs from him but you do hear a lot of negative stuff.
  21. I've wanted one (or two) for ages but they're a bit pricey for me. Are they hard to train then? What are you going to use yours for?
  22. As a matter of interest, are there figures for the number of dogs destroyed by the RSPCA or in council funded pounds in the UK? I help out at a voluntary, breed specific rescue. Some of the pounds contact us if they have a dog in that fits the criteria, but more than one won't work with rescues at all, so even if they have dogs we could take off their hands and rehome they won't let us have them. Contracts go to the lowest tender based on price and nothing else and care for the animals is irrelevant. Even basic knowledge is sometimes missing - pounds don't seem to be able to identify breeds
  23. I got the highly recommended 'Complete book of Ferrets' by Porter and Brown from ebay for under a tenner a few months ago. Just keep looking and you can get some bargains.
  24. Seen these? I think they're beautiful and am saving up..... http://www.davebudd.com/
  25. I'm not saying you should keep your dogs inside - I just prefer to. But WHY is there no way you'd keep them in the house? What are your reasons? Just think the thread'd be more interesting if people said WHY they do one thing or the other rather than just stating their position. What are the advantages of keeping them out for you?
