Chances are if you are careful, & know the land you are hunting.....you would hope 16ft will be enough.......anything deeper & you are looking at some serious excavation!

Big G, I disagree with the bit where you said "and no matter what people admit too,".There are men who go through the whole of their lives having never had a strongdog or a lurcher present on a dig. They are usual men who are brilliant with their hands and able to use a shovel. If the quarry is to be killed a firearms is used and if the quarry is to be relocated or freed they use their hands or step out of the way to let it by. If the quarry is further up the tube they trench or tunnel on, torch in mouth and slide in on their belly to get the job done. Using a dog to draw is often an excuse

The 'norm' is to imprint them from chicks, I guess that explains the fearless aggression......those are feet I wouldn't want coming at me

More Pup Troubles! Fighing Like The Mean It!
Accip74 replied to perthshire keeper's topic in Earthdogs & Working Terriers
I kept a bitch for years that was a 'nightmare for a grudge' on other bitches, invariably they had to go cos she was simply better in all cases......she killed a good bitch, & drew another, one day, so she could get to 'her' fox.....(on a walk).....if she hadn't of been so good, she would of had to go.....tough decisions -

Jawn I'm not the only person who has experienced this but once 2 terriers develop a hatred for each other its nigh impossible to break other than keep separated or get rid. Once the 'feud' has started.....usually means someone has to go..... -
Yeh try to remember it's Mitchell1982 thread lol......no disrespect, but putting still pics up of dogs apparently working means nothing....I've took plenty of pics of terriers 'apparently' working, that didn't make the grade.....why feel the need to 'prove' Wirral countryman....?

Sorry for hijacking thread youcanthide.....bang.......

Gnasher have you flown/flying a hawk or are you tempted? No i dont mate.....been tempted many times came close a few years ago did one of those falconry courses and all sorts.......just didnt feel i had the time or patience to dedicate to a bird........its still something id love to do one day i find the knowledge you chaps have so impressive i can imagine its a very rewarding feeling training and working a bird. Yeh it is mate, but one thing that has struck me since I've been hunting with hawks, is the commitment to detail it takes to get it right, I can't remember having the same

Yeh good read.......unusual for the daily mail.....

-
Yeh I had 1 with my male, never got too near to one again though lol but it's amazing what these Harris's can pick up over the seasons, I had quite an interesting 'various list' with my harris.....

I lived in London, near Camden for two years in my early twenties, I loved it! But I worked all over London & invariably these place were sh**holes, would never be interested to revisit these areas, but there's London for visitors & London to live in, I have family & friends in London & still like to visit, it's exiting! But never ever would I want to live there again....

Must admit I know of no one who uses a heater for working lurchers or terriers in kennels, I never have, apart from pups & injuries

when u say the ones of today are very late starters , at watch age roughly are you saying is very late ? 8months ? 12 months? 18 months? Borders have always seemed to have that reputation of being late starters, obviously there are always exceptions, but late starting borders are nothing new, stories of dogs not entering til 3 or 4 are not uncommon, my old man always had a soft spot for them, but wouldn't have them in his kennels due to that reputation, he was never that patient lol My mates son got one as his first terrier, he has shown great promise, but still not properly entered at 2 y

Another one got away with it.......the transcript of the saville police questioning was pathetic......he said no....they f****d off!

Fascinating stuff......but when did the trials officially end?

I'm amazed your mate can be that specific! If your after rabbits, the possibilities are endless.....I'm sure your choice will be fine...
-
I'll try & elaborate, cos you are obviously after a list of pros & cons, which is very difficult cos the variable's vary a lot between handlers. Imprint: pros : flying at higher weight's perhaps : fearless of everything around it, if imprinted well : will maybe stand for AI : due to fearless nature may commit harder to flights, I.e more likely to bind in the air to game birds : cons: can be extremely vocal in field & at home : can be aggressive, often need to be flown to lure

I met a guy this year in belgium, who had same sort of Russell, it didn't look like anything, but he showed me a photo of him with the dog & 16 foxes bolted over 2 days to guns in the Ardennes, he also gave me a DVD of this dog working, no locator, but bolt after bolt with this dog, dozens of foxes taken, just bolting to guns.......I would of prefered a nice fell type, but this dog was doing the business.......ATB
