  1. does the bird always follow the beam of the lamp?
  2. thanks, very helpful. will stop me from becoming impatient waiting for the licence to come through.
  3. can you tell me a bit more about moulting out and lamping with harrises and redtails? is there any difference between a harris and a redtail when it comes to lamping? 1 last question, can you fly reds in a cast? I presume that you cant, its only harrises but just checking.
  4. could you use purse nets instead of hessian sacks? yeah its called backnetting, make sure your pegs are secure or you will lose bunny an net down hole tho Yes you can use purse nets, trouble is when its dark and rainy/windy the bags are a lot easier to handle, and very quick to use it sounds like a complicated pair of set's to do,too much time spent means too much time exposed to the rabbits, which will wise them up, it will be hit and miss till you work them out,in summer and if you can prepare the site, get out with a machete and clear what scrub will hinder you,try putting a
  5. we did discuss this all earlier in the thread. I meant that I would pick the owl and quarry up and let it crop up later. it is the actual giving up of the quarry the owls don't like. have seen it and been told this by austringers, falconers and 'owlers'
  6. could you use purse nets instead of hessian sacks? yeah its called backnetting, make sure your pegs are secure or you will lose bunny an net down hole tho I almost had that when I moved too soon too grab a rabbit as it came out, it saw me and reversed! fortunately I have long arms and don't mind nettle stings too much!
  7. As said the first ones a rubble pile probably no evidednt holes they could be going threw the bricks second ones riddled with holes take too much time and mucking about to fill all those hole , I would still ferret it but maybe wait till the frost's come and hope the rabbits bolt . But in a rubble pile unless there huge lumps of concrete its easy enough lifting bricks of and getting the ferret back , the second one's no problem as the last place we did as you where walking over the burrow's trying to locate your ferret you where collapsing threw it .Its all about having confidence in your se

  9. thanks for the tips and ideas chaps. nothing helps more than experience, your own and other peoples. I did have a closer look yesterday eve and found another load of holes across the field well hidden in the hedge as well as more down the bank in the side of the road. I then went out later and lamped the field, around the warrens and along the hedges. the rabbits seem to hang close to home as there is a lot of food there. I will observe them at different points and in different weather until the start of the season so I have a good idea of what they are up to. also can I ferret on common land?
  10. I have recently been spying on a spot of land where I have ferreted for rats before and seen that there is a growing population of rabbits now. I would like to longnet them but the problem is this: there are 2 warrens close to each other and the rabbits feed in between them, so I couldn't run a net between the rabbits and one of the warrens because they would just bolt to the other. just before anybody tells me I should be sending the rabbits to the net from the other side of where they are feeding this would be impossible as the other problem is, I would scare them setting up as they feed so
  11. ok, the owls will probably just look nice in an aviary then!
  12. that's ok, I just know what its like to have my had chewed off and spat out!!! I am just glad you were decent and didn't call me every name under the sun!! you have helped me a lot and in a way I like. thanks again, atb and keep in touch.
  13. Doesnt matter what you want to do with them you still need to know what your doing, which in all honesty mate it seems you havent a clue. Theres not much money in breeding owls as the chicks are inexpensive to buy so i would just leave them to someone who knows what there doing. Go out with a mentor for a season then get a harris or red then you wont get bored of watching an owl fly in a straight line over and over. You will be very disappointed with the hunting capabilities of an owl, its extremely hard to get them going and just not a serious option for any falconer. Sorry to be harsh but th
  14. thanks!!! keep the offers up though in case things don't go to plan or I cant find a suitable supplier. I also like to give hobby breeders a chance to offer their queens. I may accept second year queens at a lower price. thanks again for the help.
  15. I don't mind if they don't give up there prey easily as I would probably let them eat it anyway. as I said, not too worried about hunting anyway, just want too fly them for fun.
  16. very true what you say, I have a mentor and have the back up of someone who has bred owls before, but still you have brought me back to earth with a bump a reminded me that they might be better in a huge aviary doing***all I would like to breed some in the future and fly them for pleasure, possibly hunt occasionally but may not bother if they are hard to get entered. I am looking to eventually be flying a cast of harrisses in a couple of yearsto be honest mate most owls are better of in a huge aviary doing feeck all as most are useless unless you want to eat worms and mice lol....if you want

  20. the river Waveney and the Suffolk/Norfolk broads. how long do licences, permits etc. last for, or are you just coming to that?!?!?
  21. thanks. just what I wanted to know. I am interested to know about the Bengal's because a friend is virtually giving some away (will have to find out the price) they will only be good for breeding. I was just wondering what time of year they bred so I knew when to prepare for baby's if I got some. he has 5, the original pair and their offspring which are different ages. they are in a smallish aviary together, hence the reason I would like to get some to give them more space. I was thinking of getting the original pair and breeding from them. the others would have to be split up as it is they ar
  22. Just wondering what time of year harrisses are taken from the aviary for training? also what time of year do Bengal eagle owls breed?? thanks
  23. sorry to take so long to reply. this is all making good sense to me (I cant normally understand much! ) I had the suggestion made to me to get some real cheap gear and give it a try, something like a rod and a bit of mixed tackle from somewhere like b&m!!!! is this really sensible? also, can u all give me some more info on licences and regulations and all that. I certainly don't want the environment agency turning up!! I would never live it down with my brother being like he is!!! thanks for the replys and keep them coming they are all very helpful.
  24. I have never tried fishing before in any form so I don't have the first clue. I would be fishing on rivers, preferably for fish I could eat. as I said I don't know where to start so will need to be told in fairly simple terms how and what. I roughly know what a lure, pole rod, spinning, barbed hooks and other very simple things are. any information on getting started would help.
