  1. I take it you use golden valley? when you say loss, literally if it flies away and u cant find it?
  2. no I haven't got a bird yet, but have got a mentor, handled hawks and will be flying some soon hopefully. my mentor thinks that after a bit more training he will let me get a male harris. I only thought it was sensible to insure it as it is a large amount of money to buy a hawk and a small amount extra spent on insurance is only sensible.
  3. does anybody insure there bird of prey?
  4. stuff a shotgun, its to easy! when your using an air rifle or catapult you have to chuck in a whole lot more skill and precision.
  5. almost drowned, bit boring how though
  6. I use an air rifle. yeah, you miss loads but one time I intentionally didn't net up and just stood where the rabbits couldn't see, I shot one on the run. its great fun in brambles, ive been trying it recently as I have got fed up with trying to net up. clear sights are better than a scope though. it could also be worth trying it with a bow.
  7. do it up until you can feel that it wont slip over the ferrets skull.
  8. I have also had a similar problem. when zeroing the rifle the pellets land all round the mark im trying to zero to but live quarry is fine, perfectly placed pellets which hit just where I wanted. also, I have found that the shots go all over the show when im sitting down but when im standing up I can hit a 1/2 inch wide 1ft tall piece of metal with only o couple of seconds to aim. am I just weird?
  9. the hawk probably knew it wasn't a working dog and said to itself "hmmmm somebody on benefits using up my hard earned meat" and grabbed him. (this was not directed at those who cant get jobs, just those who cant be bothered to look for them)
  10. no, not rifle magazines!! I mean shooting times etc. if anyone has any old copies for sale please pm me as I am wanting some back issues. thanks
  11. haha!! its owner wernt laffing lol I bet!! but I am though...! what we forget when sumthing unfortunate happens to us is that it gives someone else a laugh.
  12. I spose a big eagle, say a female golden, catching a deer would be like a male harris catching a hare, or have I got proportions wrong?!
  13. exactly! plus, I like venison! would it be more possible to catch roe and larger deer with a cast?
  14. thanks, thought so! is it legal to take deer with birds of prey?
  15. What is the largest quarry that a female Harris could sensibly catch? I saw a website the other day where a harris was being flown at roe deer, I find it hard to believe that it could catch them sensibly! I have also heard reports of female harrises catching muntjac & Chinese water deer and in a falconry book I picked up it had a "quarry caught" list for the year and roe was included, although all 3 had got away because they went through dense hedgerow. (this was from tony halls book) if you could please tell me (truthfully!! ) what the largest quarry is that your hawk has caught so that I
  16. sorry, forgot to tell you to tie them trousers up mate!
  17. I haven't had a ferret torn up yet. I use the net that goes round big hay bales, it slows the rats up enough to get a good whacking in! Its the only kind of ferreting that I invite other people along, the more people you have standing around, the less rats you lose. I cant keep dogs for various reasons, but I have worked with terriers and even lurchers, they all enjoy it! I am yet to use a shotgun, but would use a .410 if anything.
  18. its worth it! I didn't think it would be much fun, or that I would get many rats, but you have to actually do it yourself to find out. (just be prepared for head smacking with a stick, those rats get away jolly quick )
  19. I cant get on to youtube lads, can anyone tell me what they r up to?
  20. mine all work as a good little team, the hob a little more dominant maybe? I have 4 gills and 1 hob, each has their special own points. 2 gills I thought were nervous have turned out to be dangerous when it comes to ratting, they caught 7 between the 2 of them on Saturday just under a couple of sheds.
  21. try coch-y-bonddu books for ones that are out of print. they have a brilliant selection of hunting books.
