I really don't have the energy to go round in circles. Lets just agree to disagree on this one. I believe HMR is ricochet safer, you believe .22 is perfectly safe and on the occasional times that anything exits is the shooters fault. Case closed.

800 Hours Community Service & 5 Yr Animal Ban For Lurcher Lads
Alsone replied to STRANGER's topic in Lurchers & Running Dogs
That says it all. Posing with a dead fox doesn't mean you killed it. Even if it had been killed by dogs, provably from the injuries, it still doesn't prove you were responsible:- "We were out walking our dogs when we came across a dead fox so posed with it for a photo..." Try proving beyond reasonable doubt you were responsible. There's absolutely nothing to prove that someone else didn't kill it with dogs and leave it there. Obviously there's a confession involved somewhere. That said, at the risk of being unpopular in this section of the forum, I don't personally approve -
Just because a particular round has existed for 100 years doesn't mean that something newer that comes along can't be better in some respects. Did I say that? HMR has its faults but it also kills better due to hydrostatic shock DEAD IS DEAD, you can't get better than dead !and it has less chance of ricochet less chance of ricochet compared to what, the right .22 ammo an air rifle, a .223, what, why do you need a 245ft lb HMR to stop a rabbit, what you need is the right tool and ammo. Due to .22 Sub which was what we were talking about and HMR is an ideal tool for rabbit provided you he

Think Hunting Revolvers Will Be Allowed Back ?
Alsone replied to Aaron Proffitt's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
.45 Colt wouldn't be deer legal in any case as wouldn't meet the minimum energy requirements in the UK - 1,700 ft lbs for most larger species (muntjac and water deer excepted at 1,000 ft lbs). The other calibres would but there's no sign of the government ever reversing the handgun ban. The UK as a whole has a very anti-gun culture. All guns are viewed as evil as are all gun owners. Tell someone you shoot wild life over here in an urban pub and you're as likely to get a punch in the mouth as anything else. The culture in Britain is very much one of the population as a whole wanting a total -
Of course its not uncommon, I shoot many hundred every year, where I struggle is with the comment I can't think of a single occasion where a .22 LR slug stayed in the cavity even with long range shots. I never said that, not my quote. You appear to have questioned my response though, my apologies if that was not aimed at me. It wasn't and if you haven't already gathered from my now numerous posts, I don't make personal attacks. Well maybe if someone gets overly personal but that's very rare I'm a very laid back individual. A round that fragments is much safer than a ro

Of course its not uncommon, I shoot many hundred every year, where I struggle is with the comment I can't think of a single occasion where a .22 LR slug stayed in the cavity even with long range shots. I never said that, not my quote. My mate is very experienced he has an open ticket on all of his rifles right up to and including his 30-06. I've seen both head shots and body shot pass straight through rabbits with Winchester subs. Nothing wrong with the ammo or shot placement. Just a fact that a bullet that expands going into a soft thin bodied animal is likely to pass throu

It's not uncommon for them to pass through rabbits. My mate uses Winchester subs and I've seen many a bullet pass through and ricochet off the path. One of the reasons I prefer .17 HMR over .22. That said, can't beat .22 sub for stealth.

I'd be more worried about my own safety in exceeding the manufacturers recommendation. You can almost guarantee that the stated max load refers to the proofing loading and thus maximum recommended pressures for the barrels. If you're shooting eg a 3 inch mag in a barrel proofed for 2 1/2 inch non mag, then you're probably using up all the safety margin so if anything goes wrong.... In the old days a lot of people were killed when shotguns exploded which was why proofing was introduced. I wouldn't exceed the stamped cartridge type at any time. If its 2 1/2 or 2 3/4 stick to thos

Double or semi as you need the extra shots as bolting rabbits are very difficult to hit unless the terrain is very even. I'd err to double as its more flexible than a semi due to some shoots frowning on them. On the other hand, semis recoil less.

How Many Shots Before .17Hmr Goes Off Zero
Alsone replied to Beefbeefbeef's topic in Rimfire, Centrefire & Shotguns
I haven't watched this through, but if there's one persons views I trust on Youtube, its this guys: Anyone who knows what he does and who he was, I believe an ex special forces sniper, he surely knows how to clean a gun! You only have to see his sniping videos to appreciate his knowledge - 1st time hits at up to 1,850 yards with .338 lapua. Even 1550 yards with .243! -
Probably comitted offences as well as had unslipped guns in public - would need lawful excuse, I doubt showing to your mate would count. I they were parked next to their shoot then they might get away with it with an advisement to put them straight away. Either way, is stupid. If you're going to a shoot and leaving the slip in the car by the side of the road, then walk straight on no messing, compare guns on the shoot not the road. Same with coming off. Personally, I think its safer to take the slip unless your parking in a private car park such as a farmyard or car park owned by eg golf cours

I've never heard of one being granted in the UK for live prey. I'm pretty sure most FAO's will just tell you to apply for a rifle. Slugs have a reputation for ricocheting, limited range and are seen as a major danger to police due to their short range penetration combined with high bullet weight.

There's a very good video on scope selection and quality here (this guy really knows his stuff - think 1,000 - 1,850 yard (target) shots with 1st time hits!): 40 minutes but well worth spending the time. Did I say this guy knows his stuff?

I know 2 people that did in S. Yorks but only because they were deer stalking in Scotland. I haven't known anyone else get it open. -

I can't argue with your principles, as you know Charlie I'm very much against wounding / causing suffering. -

Less than that with Lapua. 650 yards here is under 1 second at my estimate: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv49EoCJFp0 ...and Rex's yardage is deifnately correct unlike some other videos on Youtube where 600 yards is really 200! That said, I do take your point Dan, animals can move. PS to the OP sorry for hijacking your thread with an intersting side discussion. If you still have questions please ask away and I'm sure someone will add to what's been said on the original topic. -

Well never been deer stalking so I guess I've just learnt something about UK fair play. Very different to the US where you see live quarry shots at huge ranges on Youtube. Don't get me wrong I don't condone long range shooting unless its done with a calibre that is capable of a clean kill and accuracy at the distances involved. I still think that depends on the calibre used - at 1,300 yards .338 Lapua Magnum still has 1,400 ftlbs energy (!) with a 250 grain bullet, and also it depends on the skill of the shooter but yes point taken, its just not cricket. -

Thought you needed scissors as a weapon for deer snipping. That would be an achievement the 1.54 mile vasectomy! -

Depends how you're going to use it but .338 Lapua is one of the most accurate cartridges out there and has one of the very longest accurate ranges. Longest confirmed kill in Afganistan 1.54 miles (2,707 yards): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craig_Harrison_%28sniper%29 ..and there are people on Youtube regulary making shots at small dinner plate sized targets at 1,700 metres. Now its probably irrepsonsible to shoot an animal at anything like that range (although it obviously has the stopping power given in Afganistan it killed men at 2,700 yards), but I would imagine it certainly brings -

Ok. I didn't realise that calibres in the Big Game category were being licensed for deer by some forces. Certainly the 7mm mag is hotter than I thought, albeit very similar to .30-06. Must admit, if could get a bigger calibre licensed I'd be leaning towards a .338 Lapua magnum. -

At the end of the day, I'm not saying that its the ultimate calibre. Its just one of the fastest deer calibres. Opinions always differ and yes there are more powerful cartridges out there, although some you mention eg .338 is classified Big Game Only for Good Reason in UK so not available to deer shooters; https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/117797/HO-Firearms-Guidance.pdf Although .30-378 WM isn't listed in the guidance, given its energy, I'd be very surprised again if it wasn't on the big game category at over 6,000 joules. As for 7mm Magnum, alm -

Bit off topic as the OP isn't going deer hunting, but personally I can't see a reason to recommend 6.5x55 swe. Its big and slow. .30-06 is the fastest most powerful cartridge below having to show Big Games as good reason ie its the most powerful deer and below calibre closely followed by .270, which some prefer because its that little bit flatter shooting, has less recoil and quite similar in to .30-06 in many aspects. .30-06 also goes up to 220 grains which is a large bullet by any standards. I would suggest that for anyone hunting large deer, .30-06 or .270 are probably the front runners
